  THE AGEING OF STILL-ACTIVE WITNESSES

  several years ago i started a thread on this forum in which i asserted i had not seen witnesses door-knocking in my village for at least two or so years.

  years before that - in pre-trolley times - in going about my business (or pleasure), i'd catch sight of them on the streets as they shuffled in their groups from door-to-door: sometimes there'd be contingents of witnesses, including young couples, parents and their kids and middle-aged and older ones.

  in other words, a good cross-section of ages and stages in life.. in fact, i can remember times when witnesses were so visible in numbers when going out in their car groups, you literally couldn't escape them.. then, in more recent years, i've seen very, very little...if not anything (and i count myself sensitive to noting whether jws are out and about).

  It's difficult to say. We certainly don't get our door knocked on very often and I've only seen them near the carts when when we've been visting major towns. I've never seen them in our local town.

  According to family there's been a lot of reorganisation/ merging of local congs so it's even difficcult to gauge numbers (I sometimes think it's a useful side effect for them) that attend. My mother said that if I went back to my home cong (last went twenty years ago) I wouldn't recognise any of the faces.

  Well you should look up Trey Bundy.

  The fact I have to kinda proves my point. I've also never heard of SNAP. You obviously have, but not everyone has the same priorities and the safeguarding policies of a minor restorationist religion are of no concern to the vast majority of people.

  In my mind, the policies that govern safeguading should be law. Those directors of companies/organisations that don't adhere to them and a child gets abused because of their negligence (but only where negligence can be proved and that will be the minority of cases) then the directors of the congregation (who in the UK are charity trustees) should be criminally responsible in the same way I would be criminally responsible if I sent an employee out in a van with defective brakes and he killed or injured someone.

  Never heard of him.

  I'm not sure you can compare the witnesses to the Catholic Church or the Scouts however. They're simply not big enough to catch the national media in a sustained campaign in the way the two organisations you mentioned are.

  Don't get me wrong, any article or publicity exposing the poor practices they have is good news but it's never going to be page 1 in a sustained way.

  What we need is an organisation to bring legal charges against the WT directors if they don't change their practices. Unfortunately I'm not sure such a mechanism exists.

  Even the ARC, as damning as it was, has no authority to effect any change.

  Edit - the biggest exposure their practices have had in the U.K. Was the panorama documentary, but just checked and that was 15 years ago.

  It is time it changed - the JW safeguarding processes have been deplorable in the past. There is evidence that they are finally changing procedures.

  It all seems to happen at a local level though. The incident that brought me here after not giving them a thought for the last twenty years was a newspaper article about local elder who had been found guilty of having indecent images on his PC. But, as they say, today's newspaper is tomorrow's fish and chip paper and the incident will have been forgotten by the local people.

  Even though I'm an atheist, one of the fundamental rights a person has is a freedom to follow a religion of their choice and that includes those who want to be a JW. I have no desire to go to my still believing relatives and trash their religion even though I think it's a load of rubbish - it's up to them what they believe and I don't have the right to tell them not to.

  Lke a lot of religions they do need to look at safeguarding policies and hopefully the attention from the ARC and the UK CC will force change on them. This will happen out of the view of the general public though because the general public simply don't give a shit about a nothing religion.

  I find it amusing that those who were intolerant of other viewpoints as witnesses are sometimes just as intolerant of other viewponts when they become vehement ex-witnesses.

  Whatever we think about this, in the end, the WT will be made to pay. It may not be the justice system-heavenly or earthly, but humanity has had enough of this in even the most backward places. The times are a changing and they can't hide anymore and that is worth plenty, in my book.

  I think you give them too much credit. Humanity doesn't give be a shit about the JWs - thankfully they're insignificant. To everyone that isn't a witness or ex-witness they're a bunch of slighty odd but generally nice people who disturb them on a Sunday morning.

  If you asked 100 people if they had heard of the AR commission, I would be amazed if even one had.

  how long until wt has flip flopped its way back to anything of the faith many of us knew?

  who are the now dead ones giving evidence of their non captivity to babylon etc?

  i would not recognise what goes on in a kh now and i was in since 60s when we had firm beliefs, now being eroded little by little.

  consider this an update for those that remember me here.... when i left in 2006, it started a 10 year journey into a new phase.

  no more "safety".

  some people want to be their own person.
