Could a petition to make shunning illegal work?
by aboveusonlysky inwe're currently watching leah remini's series about scientology and the main thing she seems to focus on is the shunning policies of the scientology organization which let's face it are very similar to jw procedure.. i was wondering with all that's in the media recently about bullying could a petition be put together to get the goverment to consider making religiously mandated shunning illegal?
has such a thing been tried before?.
https://petition.parliament.uk/help says the following - .

If we are further away from perfection, why are we more moral?
by stuckinarut2 inas we know, witnesses teach that adam and eve were perfect and then committed the first act of sin and rebellion.. they in turn were cursed, and we all declined as their offspring.
humans supposedly lived shorter and shorter lives, and became more imperfect and sinful.. the further away in time humans go then, they should be getting worse.
so why is it then that as a society, humans have actually improved in so many ways?.

Judeo / Christian ethics has had an enormous impact on the world.
They have. And it's no coincidence that the world is getting better as those particular brand of ethics become less significant.

UK Memorial attendances up this year?!
by Isambard Crater inmy congregation had around 25 more people at the memorial last night than last year, and the two other congregations i have family in all experienced a similar increase in about 25 more people present.
umm, i'm surprised, having thought this year would see a memorial decline again.
and i'm kind of disappointed..

When did the Iron Age start according to the Bible? You'll be surprised!
by Crazyguy inread this over at reddit so the credit goes to the person over there but in genesis 4:22 it's say one of the offspring of adam knew how to work with iron roughly 130 years after the creation of man.
now historians and scientists say man didn't figure out how to use iron until about 1100 bc, man we're we wrong!
it's also interesting that cain is building a city when there like 10 people on the planet and nimrod goes on to build the tower of babel only about 100 year after the flood.

I’ve tried to be polite. I’m merely here to represent a different point of view. Ostensibly, I am welcomed, but I don’t think it is for real. Certainly, the blogmaster has not chained up Outlaw, and he is a major di$traction, always$ nipping at my heel$, supplementing his bite$ with in$ulting graphic$. Alright, I get it, he think$ our people $hould $ub$i$t on honeycomb$ and locu$t$.
Don't worry about it. Outlaw's forum persona is a bit like that cousin that's a little bit dim that everyone ignores. He's good at posting pictures but I can't recall him ever posting anything actually worth reading.
Welcome BTW.

My grandad recently died. He was 95 years old. He was around before Lindbergh flew the Atlantic.
So according to the witnesses and other Christian fundie sects, in just 40 of his lifetimes (give or take since the flood) the whole history of civilisation; in china; in Africa; in Australaisia has grown.
Yeah, right.

Disfellowshipping decision to go before Canadian Supreme Court
by Simon inhigh court will examine whether judicial review applies to membership decisions made by religious groups.
the supreme court of canada has agreed to hear an appeal involving a calgary man who was kicked out of his jehovah's witness church.. randy wall, a real estate agent was "disfellowshipped" from the highwood congregation for being drunk on two occasions and allegedly verbally abusing his wife.. as a result, he says his clients refused to do further business with him, so he argued his property and civil rights were affected.. after losing three internal church appeals of his expulsion, wall made an application with the court of queen's bench in calgary which ordered a hearing to first determine if there was jurisdiction for the court to hear the application.. decisions and appeals.
a judge decided the superior court did have jurisdiction to hear the application.. the church then appealed wall's decision to the alberta court of appeal, which upheld the court of queen's bench, affirming the court has jurisdiction to hear the matter.. one of the three appeal court judges dissented — arguing that congregations are private organizations akin to bridge clubs, whose decisions "are not enforceable promises and have limited, if any, impact outside its small circle.".

(And, no, Richard Oliver, I am not a wife-beater).
Yes, but you are an estate agent. Which is probably worse. ;)

Scientism - Nothing But a Childish Insult?
by cofty init is not uncommon for theists to accuse rational people on this forum of "scientism".. in my opinion it is nothing but a cheap shot from those who know they lack evidence for their beliefs.
if something like "scientism" actually does exist then i have never encountered it.. here is part of an exchange from another thread - i have brought it here as it was off-topic.... scientism = claim of scientific method being universal and the only valid method of knowledge.
followers of scientism always demand scientific evidence to anything.

I just pity the poor bastards who lived in the periods of time when Drs didn't know shit. Thankyou to all those guinea pig patients and mentally ill people and soldiers and gay people who were subjected to medicinal "torture" in the name of advancing knowledge.
It's called progress.
In a hundred years we'll be viewed as primitive and our current medical techniques will be looked back at with disdain.

Dear Syrian Refugees
by Simon inwelcome to canada from one immigrant to another !.
calgary is welcoming it's first refugees from syria and iraq so tomorrow i'm going to take all the winter clothing that we have and donate it to a women / children's charity.
it's not much (well, actually, it's a huge pile ... everything from when we first moved over!

After World War Two, there were agreements made between nations to avoid refugee problems exactly like we're seeing today. Unfortunately, they're being ignored. If the refugees could be taken in by all counties proportional to their populations, we wouldn't have the overwhelming numbers in Germany and other welcoming countries.
I'm not sure if it's militarily feasible or that the political will is there to put troops on the ground but my thoughts would go along the route of creating a safe haven within Syria near the Turkish border - with a multinational force under a UN header.
Similar concept to the Balkans in the 90s.
