Who can you trust to admit you have doubts?

in margaret atwood's "the handmaid's tale", a futuristic story of life inside a repressive, abusive big brother-style society tightly controlled by religious fundamentalists, there's a passage in which the protagonist is alone with another woman at a state-controlled centre where prayers are generated -- then printed out and read out -- by a machine.

the other woman asks, in barely more than a whisper, "do you think god listens to these machines?

Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite authors! Glad to hear of fellow fans!

I can talk about almost anything with my mom, the woman who taught her kids to always do their research regarding medical procedures, grocery shopping, news stories, etc. Between my parents, Mom is more willing to learn and accept the falsehood of things previously thought to be true, and she had no problem about my sister and me going to college.

Of course, when I finally decided last October to tell her my real feelings about the bOrg and what I found out through research, the first thing she said was, "Get behind me, Satan, get behind me!"

After calming her down, her follow-up was, "What am I supposed to live for?"

JW's Funerals, Forget About The Person! Let's Preach.

god forbid you would talk about the dead person at his funeral.

so what do most people get after living 70-80 years?.

a 5-10 minutes eulogy.

I was always so embarrassed being in the presence of the deceased's family while listening to the so-called eulogy. They didn't become Witnesses for a reason before their loved one died.

Most of the people in my congregation just stare and whisper about the relatives in attendance, then they all scramble around making sure they have a ride to the restaurant where the free lunch is being served. ~_~;;*

How do you feel about the expression "The Truth"?

it's amazing how the expression "the truth" has become such an ingrained term used by witnesses.. "we have 'the truth'".

"is he 'in the truth'?".

most here have found out so many facts about the organisation, and felt the effects of being "gut-punched" as we realised these facts.. so how do you feel about the expression "the truth" now?.

I've always connected "The Truth" to The X-Files, hahaha. Even before finding out about all of the hypocrisy and lies, I can't remember a time when I ever used the phrase in relation to the bOrg.

My deeply religious cousin asked me when I was in middle school, "Do you know The Truth?" I replied, "About what?"

Besides, I really do believe in aliens.

My First CLAM Meeting

I attend a non-English-speaking congregation in the US (my mom and her side of the family are unfortunately still in), and the CLAM meeting seems to excite everyone since it was announced, oh dear... Is this the case for other non-English-speaking congregations out there? Really curious whether this is a trend or the people around me are just too indoctrinated.

Sugar Shane Dude, your idea needs to be a thing this year. Maybe family members of awakened/former Witnesses can attend the Memorial of other congregations so it wouldn't look suspicious.

Alan Rickman's Passing

alan rickman, best known to my generation as prof. severus snape from the harry potter film franchise, has passed away due to cancer at the age of 69.. growing up with a witness mother, anything related to science fiction and fantasy was looked down upon, so, naturally, i was a rebel rebel (oh david bowie...).. just wanted to let any potterheads know the news and that even if you feel like you'll never be free of the deadly watchtower, you're not alone and there's hope.. always..

Late Bloomer - I usually become a fan of a celebrity based on his/her voice, and Alan Rickman is in my top list. I’ve been wanting to collect audiobooks read by my favorite actors, and Alan did some that I will definitely buy.

Saintbertholdt and pbrow - I haven’t seen Die Hard in a long time, oh mate, it really is the best Christmas movie!

GoneAwol - Alan’s performance made me root for the Sheriff of Nottingham (like how I secretly rooted for Snape).

Heaven and Saintbertholdt - That’s exactly the first thing I thought of when I heard the news. I’m curious to check who else is 69 but a little scared, too…

Gentledawn - I was cringing in my seat with anxiety when I first saw this movie because I didn't want to see Johnny Depp's Sweeney Todd role killing Alan's.

Xanthippe - I always give extra kudos and respect to celebs who are able to maintain their marriages for so long.

Cadellin - If I could edit my original topic post, I would add those photos (all three). Time to change my wallpaper at work…

when you went to an "assembly" did you wear a badge?

when i was young my folks made me wear one and i opened it up and took the paper out making it look like it fell out.

after my folks ask what happen i said i dont know.

My younger sister and I used to draw on the back side (usually anime and video game characters), write our nicknames and be really vague on what congregation we're from. We eventually stopped wearing them and made the excuse that we misplaced our badges. Thankfully, Mom gave up on the issue, mostly because she legitimately couldn't find hers, hahaha. d(^___^)b*

another thread got me thinking of this issue.

i don't think you'll ever come across a set of people with such a skewed and twisted outlook on life.. my memory serves me well when i recall a sort of blood lusting excitement over things like the 9/11 atrocities.

in fact i remember jw's describing the event as 'sad but exciting.

Thanks, cha ching, at least for me, it helps to look at Witnesses like that and then everything turns into a weird reality TV show that you unwillingly star in.
