im really interested in starting to jog or run.. what would be a good speed to start and how far would be a good goal?.
i know power walking is about 6k an hour, for 30 to 40 minutes but what about running??
You definitely want to start out slowly. A run/walk plan is a very good way to start. Run for two minutes...walk one minute. Repeat for fifteen to twenty minutes. If this is too hard, lengthen the walk, too easy, lengthen the run. Eventually you want to increase your run time and decrease the walk breaks.
I started running three years ago. I had a goal of running a 5K in June 2002, so I started running in April. I was already fit, just not a runner. I could hardly run a mile on the track. I kept at it though and by June I had no problem finishing the 5K in under 29 minutes. I am not the type to be content with a 5K so I went on to run a 10K that October and was up to half marathons by March of the following year. My quick build up caused a hip injury that made me take four months off of running. So, start slowly and progress slowly. Being injured was enormously depressing.
I've since run two marathons and have improved my 5K time to under 23 minutes.
Feel free to PM if you have questions or whatever. I'm a personal trainer and I would love to help someone get into running.
BTW, the advice about getting good shoes is #1. The wrong shoes will cause you pain and injury. Best if you can find a running store that will watch you run and analyze your gait. I ran in the wrong shoes for a long time and it caused knee pain. Now that I'm in the right shoe, the pain is gone. We have three stores that watch you run in Seattle, they don't charge for it...just the shoes. Hopefully you have something similar in your area.
do you believe that vivisection (animal experimentation) that usually involves causing disease or injury to animals for the sake of scientific research is an unethical practice that should be banned?
I love that Paul Mitchell products clearly state that they have been tested on the stylists and not animals. For some reason, that has always cracked me up.
On the other hand, last week I took the kids to the zoo. The lioness had caught herself a seagull and was playing with it like it was a toy. I'm thinking the gull would have preferred vivisection...but maybe not.
i just finished it today and i thought it was the best or second best yet.
i didnt like the last 2 that much but i really enjoyed this one.
it was cool to find out so much about voldermort's past.
Ithought that maybe because of his unbreakable vow to protect Malfoy he had to kill Dumbledore. It's possible, but Malfoy wasn't in danger from Dumbledore. Now then when they face Voldemort, Malfoy may be in danger from him but at that point I don't think Snape stepped in because of Malfoy. I think he was acting on Dumbledore's orders much as Harry did later in refusing to tell McGonagall where Dumbledore was.
I thought Malfoy's order from Voldemort was to kill Dumbledore. Since Snape made the unbreakable vow to Narcissa, when Malfoy failed, Snape had no choice but to follow through with the orders to kill Dumbledore.
Yes, but only IF he knew that Harry's scar was a Horcrux Remember that he didn't intend to transfer part of his soul to Harry He wanted to kill him; And Dumbledore said something about one commits murder one loses part of their soul ; He had already killed Harry's parents that evening ; I think Voldemort wanted 7 pieces but only got as far as 6 when the killing curse backfired on him and he was set adrfit without a body ; Since he came back in Goblet of Fire, I think he's been too busy reestablishing himself to think about that old project; But if Harry is the Gryffendor Horcrux, the locket is Slytherin and the cup is Huffle Puf what is the horcrux for Ravenclaw? Could it have something to do with Peter Petergrew's missing finger?; Was he Ravenclaw?
But Dumbledore said Voldemort needed to keep part of his soul, so the seventh part would be himself. It didn't sound like he could inadvertantly make a horcrux, it was a deliberate action. So, if Harry is indeed the Gryffendor horcrux, Voldermort would know it. Also, Voldemort would have no way of knowing that Harry would be sorted into Gryffendor in the future so it seems unlikely that Harry would be the representative of Gryffendor. Just my thoughts. I'm pretty sure Peter Pettigrew was also Gryffendor, I'll ask Rhys.

I think Snape made an Unbreakable Vow to Dumbledore to follow his orders, which is why Dumbledore trusts him so much. Dumbledore wasn't pleading for his life, he was pleading for Snape to do what he had to, else Snape would have died. Remember too in The Order of Phoenix, Dumbledore tells Voldemort that there are worse things than dying and that if Dumbledore was struck down he would become more powerful than Voldemort could imagine. I think if Snape was following Dumbledore's orders and is not really a Death Eater, it would explain why he was so furious at Harry for accusing him of cowardice. Despite Snape's fascination with the Dark Arts, I think he really wants nothing to do with Voldemort and was providing Dumbledore with information about him, his movements and the identities of the Death Eaters.
Again...interesting. But wouldn't Voldemort try to preserve Harry? Could be an interesting twist if/when Harry destroys the other horcruxes and Voldemort is in the position of having to keep Harry alive in order to stay alive himself.
Hermione is always telling Harry and Ron that you can't apparate and dis-apparate inside Hogwarts. Dobby and Kreacher did several times with no explanation. Anyone know why? I think it was in Goblet of Fire that Rowling said house elves have a magic all their own and that the spells of Hogwarts don't always apply to them.OK, thanks. I figured there must be a reason and someone here would know.
hope everyone one is having a great summer season...... has anyone read any good books lately...?.
willy loman; are you out there,,,?.
ps just a note to say that patty and i had dinner with willy loman and his wife when they came to new york; we had a wonderful time......and willy has some great news to announce and share with the forum...
currently reading: Night Fall by Nelson Demille. I love his style.
I read that several months back. My dad gave it to me. I enjoyed the story but the dragnet style kind of irritated me.
I finished Harry Potter yesterday...really enjoyed it. Last week I read the Historian by Elizabeth something-or-other. Great reviews and bestseller. I liked it, had an excess of background blather surrounding a really interesting dracula story.
Before that I read Moloka'i by Alan Rennert. Really great novel about a seven year old Hawaiian girl who gets leprosy (Hansen's disease) and is taken from her family and banished to the Leper Colony on Moloka'i.
I'm going to read the new Robin Cook next, can't remember what the title is.

I also finished it today.
I loved the book. It answered so many questions from the first five. I was sad about Dumbledore but I suspected he would be the one to die. I was also sad to read about Snape. I never liked him but was hopeful that he truly was a good guy.

I think it will all get wrapped up nicely in book seven. I don't think Harry will die but it should be an exciting story.

my husband was on the phone with the elder who was the po at the time of the great "wedding fiasco".
let's just say my husband initiated the conversation (i can't go into details) and just before he hung up i said something i've been wanting to say for almost 6 years!
i yelled at the top of my lungs: (now mind you; i was only about a foot from the phone) f**k you!!!
This thread was edited in an interesting way. The women were silenced, but Gumby's line still stands. I still say way to go Cathy....and Gumby too apparently.
