  some were humble, but their were a few pompous asses who thought they were gods gift to the org and acted like they were ceo's of a fortune 500 company...

  My corner of PA had a Bro. Henriques. Can't remember his first name or his wife's name. Nice couple. He pronounced his name 'Henricks'. An old sister in the KH said she had known his mother and the family name really was pronounced Hen-rie-quez.

  Another was Bill Moon. He and his wife were really lovely people. Bill's health forced him out of circuit work and he came back to my area and settled down. He was one of the few elders I ever had any respect for. Bill passed away several years ago.

  Then there was the one whose name I can't remember who dared to lecture me on my choice of profession. Said women weren't meant to work in construction and that I should get married and let my husband take care of me.

  Watchtower view on hunting and fishing?

  i grew up doing both.

  while i was in the org, i didn't hear too much about fishing, but all of the co's frowned upon hunting.

  their stance was jw's should not own a gun.

  Attitudes toward hunting vary widely from congregation to congregation. The one I grew up in was split on whether it was ok or not. Their issue was whether hunting showed respect for the gift of life or not. What they decided was: hunting for food=ok; hunting for trophies=disrespectful. Both my JW BILs are avid hunters. Their congregations are all big into hunting. There's no written official policy as far as I know and I doubt avid hunters would obey it anyway.

  What is the Watchtower view on donating to charity?

  I heard from the platform at a district convention that JWs shouldn't give to charities or volunteer at soup kitchens/homeless shelters because the people the aid was going to were going to die at Armageddon anyway. It would be a waste of resources that could have gone to the WT. Plus it was supposed to show a lack of faith that God would fix everything. Well, DUH. God hasn't fixed anything so obviously humans have to step up and help each other.

  I was told not to give to the United Way because some of the funds MIGHT go to abortion clinics. I don't even know if that story was true or some BS the elder who said it made up to discourage me from giving. When I was growing up my congregation was told we couldn't give items to the Salvation Army or shop at one of their stores because it was 'false religion'. Helping the Red Cross was out because they used a 'pagan' symbol. Never mind that they aren't really a religious group, at least not in the modern age. The red cross just happens to be the universal symbol for hospitals and medical personnel. Giving to the local Shriners children's hospital was out because supposedly the Shriners had some occult connection. Personally, any group that does good for sick kids deserves my support.

  the bible is designed to be understood by those who are humble and willing to learn.

  jesus said to his father: “i publicly praise you, father, lord of heaven and earth, because you have carefully hidden these things from wise and intellectual ones and have revealed them to young children.” (luke 10:21) the bible is written in such a way that only those with the right attitude would understand its message.

  people with a proud attitude—a common trait of “wise and intellectual ones”—tend to misunderstand the bible.

  Yes, the Bible really IS easy to understand. Its genocidal, homicidal, woman-hating, kill your neighbors if they have a different religion from you and steal their land message is pretty plain.

  a few weeks ago, i was chatting with a brother who is well into his 80’s.

  he went to college, got his bachelor’s degree and was a school teacher for many years.

  during that time, he was an elder in his congregation, had many privileges and cared for his young family.

  I am a tradeswoman, a carpenter, and I can honestly say I wish I'd gone to college. The pay is decent, when I'm working. Therein lies the problem. New home construction is non-existent in my area and has been that way for years. The area I live in is dying. Jobs are leaving. People are leaving. No one is moving here. I'm laid off right now and not sure if I'm going to be called back. I may have to find a new line of work. Probably should.

  I'm 40 years old and have been in this field since I was 16. It takes a terrible toll on your body. So kids, be smart. Please. Get an education. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't or shouldn't. Trust me. Being unemployed and struggling to pay your bills is no fun.

  Bilhah and Zilpha were Leah's and Rachel's slaves. They had no choice. Which doesn't look so good for old Jacob. A predator who took advantage of the vulnerable.

  "You Can Do Just Enough Ministry To Dislike It"

  when you were "in" did you ever actually enjoy the ministry?

  and i made no secret about it.

  instead i would joke about me feather knocking, and made sure i had my bible in hand so as they come to the door they know what im about so they can shut me down before i even start.. i always wondered how or why there were people who enjoyed it.

  Hated every aspect of it. I was very shy as a kid and it was sheer torture going to strangers' doors. And then wanting to die of humiliation when a classmate or teacher would answer. Spending summers in dowdy, hot dresses and those friggin nylons while normal people were at the pool. I started having panic attacks out in FS when I was a teen. Know what an elder told me? "It's 'just' a phobia. Get over it!" Ah, the loving shepherds of the flock!
