I remember this from the 80s. We weren't supposed to join the Y because it was the Young Men's CHRISTIAN Assiciation. Somewhere along the line, and I don't know when but by the early 90s, the thinking had changed. I knew of an elder who had a Y membership in the early 90s.

YMCA?
by LifesNotOver inmy husband's gone to his meeting and i'm catching up with folks here on our forum.
i'm sure i'm having a better time :) anyway, was just following some posts regarding the un and there happened to be a copy of a magazine article stating brothers wouldn't want to be joining the "y" because it was "christian".
i think this was back in the 1950's (maybe not).

The Humbling of Anthony
by Duncan ini didn’t really care for anthony very much.
at the time of this story he was 13 or 14 years old, a clever and precocious kid down the hall.
he was extremely zealous about the truth and took it, and himself, very seriously.

Just a little anecdote illustrating how out of touch the typical JW is
by sir82 inthis weeks book study lesson was on martha, the sister of lazarus.
the chapter in the "imitate their faith" book praised her for being "industrious".. the conductor at our congregation meeting was just positively gushing about how "industrious" modern-day jw women are.. he was so exciting, he could barely get the words out.
following is not an exact quote, but conveys the gist:.

Well, James Mixon, Jesus DID call a woman (the Syro-Phoenician I think?) a dog. Even in this day and age, those are fighting words.
I once had a CO counsel me about my occupation: carpenter/cabinetmaker. I was told it was 'inappropriate' for women, that women aren't 'designed' for 'men's' work. That I didn't have the mental or physical capacity to do the work. Which was a crock. I'd been doing that work since I was sixteen. I should get married and let my husband support me. The local elder who came with him just sat there looking embarrassed, but he didn't have the balls to SAY anything.
First, as long as its an honest job, it was none of the CO's business WHAT I did. Second, what kind of 50's alternate reality was he living in? Even twenty years ago it was getting harder for families to get by on only one income. Wish I'd kicked him down my apartment stairs! I did NOT quit my job and I met the man I eventually married on the job. We both still work for that company.

Brother & Sister-in-Law Return to Kingdom Hall After Two Decades, Quickly Get Stumbled
by TMS init was a mild surprise, learning that a brother and sister-in-law had began re-associating with jehovah's witnesses after at least 25 years of being away.
the couple, of hispanic ethnicity, are in their early 60's, with their five children all grown and independent.
the family had been considered nominal jws, infrequently attending meetings, rarely in field service, but using the annual convention as their family vacation.

The KH I used to go to has a large lawn that they use tractors to mow. One weekend it was the designated do-yardwork-at-the-Hall Saturday. That particular time one of the 'brothers' let me drive one of the tractors; don't remember why, but hey! I'm driving the tractor! Beats pulling weeds! I was doing a pretty good job until an elder had a hissy fit and made me stop. Apparently it isn't 'appropriate' for a female to drive a tractor while mowing the KH lawn. -

Could Joel Osteen Bring the JWs Out of Their Doldrums?
by TMS inrussell had some charisma, as did the alcoholic womanizer, j.f.
rutherford.
n.h. knorr, not so much.

The man has the gift of the gab. I'll give him that. And he also has a gift for conning people into giving him money. Osteen's lifestyle is proof of that. If nothing else, having Joel Osteen at the helm of WTBTS would solve any money woes.

The Elders want to meet with me and the hubby... Lol lol lol
by Sevan inso the elders called wanting to meet with me and my husband.
most likely because i told a concerned jw friend of mine that i really care about that i wasn't coming back and a couple of the issues i had.
i didn't bring up any so-called "apostate" information, just told her about the australian royal commission and that there are a lot of unscriptural teachings and that the gb apply scriptures that are about jehovah and jesus to themselves, which is idolatry.

I hear you, Sevan. JWs really are cowardly when it comes to facing people. But I guess I shouldn't be too hard on them. It's the programming and I know how deep that can go.
Good for you, standing your ground. Just remember, the elders are only pathetic men on a power trip. Ignore them long enough and eventually something or someone else will come along to distract them from you.

Didn't the dubs at one time discourage investing in the stock market? Wasn't It supposed to be like gambling? Hmmmm. Seems that went out the window once the WTBTS figured out they could make money from investing in stocks. And wouldn't R&F dubs be told to get rid of any stocks relating to military contractors and/or tobacco?

Reading old WT volumes was what convinced me that not only was the WTBTS NOT the truth, it was pure bull. So yes, young ones. By all means, research.

A comment was made that 'The Message' would soon be changing. I asked 'like that the ark door will soon be closing?'. Answer, 'Yes'
If the message did by some chance change, would anyone really notice? I mean, how many people actually bother to listen to what the JWs say?

Just to weigh about grandparents' visitation rights: Here in the US the Supreme Court ruled that grandparents do NOT have an absolute right to visitation with grandchildren if the parents refuse to allow it. The parents have the right to decide how much access, if any, to allow. If the grandparents feel that the parent or parents are unfit, they have to go to court to try and get custody.
