Is anyone going to the special talk today?

there is a special talk today, evidently about our old friend babylon the great.

there is some speculation that it might be related to the possible new light on the un that undisfellowshipped spoke about in his thread:.

Went to the special talk. Same old Same old...

United Nations is going to destroy false religion.

Process of elimination argument to prove that Babylon the Great isn't a political entity.

Babylon the Great can't be a political entity because it has imoral intercourse with all the nations of the earth. (Of course this is contradicted by the fact that the political entities Ninevah & Tyre are also spoken of as having imoral intercourse with all the nations of the Earth)

Babylon must be religion because she uses "spiritistic practices" to mislead everyone. (They ignore the fact that Ninevah and Tyre, clearly political entities, are described as "mistress of sorceries")

The final verse of Revelation 18 is used to show that relgion is to be blamed for all of man's wars. (Too bad they didn't read the cross reference for Rev 18:24 which refers you to Jeremiah 51:49 where a similar claim is made about the literal city of Babylon)

The cities of refuge were given as an illustration that there is no literal place you can flee from False Religion. Although in the world we must stay in the "city of refuge/organization". We are supposedly all blood-guilty through community responsibility.

They said it is clear that the UN "has religion in its sights".

So my conclusion as of April 27, 2003 they still don't have a clue.

Amazing! The only thing you offer is some abstract situation based on wishful thinking. And then you admit the killer is "a victim."

Once again you are showing your narrow mindedness. The fact is I offer nothing in this argument but a suggestion that you do more research on the subject. Your arguments have been hashed and rehashed on forums dedicated to this debate. I am not about to engage in a debate on this. The "only thing that I offered" is what I think is a significant area that is overlooked - genetic predisposition to crimnality - including murder.

By the way - The examples you gave don't prove the necessity of murdering murderers to keep them from murdering again. The examples illustrate the need to REALLY keep murderers in jail for life.

And I reassert, in the face of your ridicule (not rebuttal), that murderers are also victims.

I can understand why people want to murder the murderer. It is natural to retaliate against those who have done you harm. We are, after all, really animals. Killing was often the only solution where there was a conflict. Modern society doesn't have to kill criminals. We can afford to jail them. And I mean REALLY jail them.

As I said before there are millions of pages written on this subject. Have you gone to pages that are against capital punishment and personally tried to rebutt them?

it puts forth a fallacy that the killer is the victim.

The Killer is not THE victim. However he is A victim.

For the sake of your childish need for "closure" you choose to Kill someone who killed someone else. You pretend to know all the causes of a persons behavior. You don't and no one does.

That's fine if you want to ask any question you want. Or start any thread you want. I am also against Simon locking topics.

I think if there is someone who is locked up for 1st degree murder and they want to murder people inside - then you do the same thing you do for people who want to kill themselves. Put them in a rubber room and keep them sedated. Maybe you would have to hand-cuff them. Perhaps a daily injection of depoprovera may neutralize some of the aggression.

The point is that the rare (rare?) person that just loves to kill has other problems. What would you say if your son murdered someone and was executed and a few months later geneticist discovered a biological defect that predisposes people to that kind of behavior and they developed a drug that would prevent it?

Again you haven't considered ALL of the options - even for the most "hardened" killer. And you insist on sticking to your two handled question that by its very structure discourages the consideration of other options.

It's kind of like the question "Have you stopped beating your wife?" Yes or No.

I meant to say this is a little unifinished business from the dark ages.

My original post was meant to say that I don't think this is a good forum to rehash the millions of pages on line dealing with the subject of Capital Punishment. I feel the same about arguments over Atheism, Evolution, Abortion, euthanisa, Economic Systems, Conservatism vs. Liberalism.

UNLESS... there is something new and significant in the news. Then everyone feels like they want to get off their best hit. Which is good because it lets everyone know where they stand on certain issues. If I had the time I would love to go over all the posts and figure out where everyone stands on certain issues. It is more revealing than any personality test.

Do you need me to go to Google.com and post some links pro & con on capital punishment?

One of the things I hate about the Watchtower is that they have a Capital Punishment orientation. That's what I hate about the Moslems. That's what I hate about the Old Testament.

Why would the most powerful person in the universe need to sacrifice his son to appease his sense of justice? If you believe that stuff then you have a licence to kill.

Here is why your question isn't going to be very productive:

You are presenting false alternatives. You are assuming too few alternatives and at the same time, assuming that one of the suggested alternatives must be true.

Yours is a textbook case of this fallacy because you end up with only two alternatives. That's why this fallacy is sometimes called the "black-and-white" fallacy.

This is an oversimplification of the situation by a failure to entertain or at least recognize all the possible alternative solutions. Thinking in extremes requires much less mental effort than looking dilligently for all possible solutions to a problem. The implicit premise is that all possible solutions to this problem can be reduced to only two alternatives represents a lack of imaginative effort. Your "either-or" premise is part of a lousy argument.

Now let me ask you a question:

Do the alternatives that you set forth exhaust all the possible alternatives?

Don't you think that if you really tried you could be imaginative enough to think of some others?

That is why I suggest going on Google.com and thoroughly investigating this issue.

There is something seriously wrong with the United States, Communist China, & the Arab world and their choice to remain in the dark ages.

When I was a young man & trying to date, pioneer, work nights - I fell asleep at the bookstudy while I was conducting. The brother who was reading shook me to wake up. I apologized to the group. I asked my assistant to finish the study - I went home to bed.

We were studying the Babylon book - first half - really, really boring stuff on Isaiah. Kind of like the Isaiah book we're studying now.

I can't think of a single problem where money doesn't make things easier.

Most people spend the first half of their lives trying to get money.

I spent the first half of my life to find the 'SECRET OF HAPPINESS".

I discovered the SECRET OF HAPPINESS is MONEY.

I plan on spending the rest of my life in pursuit of money. Along with an occasional visit to this forum.

what do you all think are the "rules" jws have been given that smack of pharisaical (is that a word?

) burdening and/or hypocricy?.

Don't put your arm around your wife and rub her shoulder during the meeting. There are single sisters that may feel bad.

You shouldn't go on fishing trips and leave your wife at home. Do you know what she may be doing while you are gone?

Can't use binocculars at assemblies.

Back in the 1950's if you hung out colored bed sheets (remember blue, pink, yellow pastels?) you would get a talking to.

The Golden Age used to condemn jazz & blues. Blues were especially bad with their simultaneous expression of grief & joy at the same time.
