  True Christians neutral in War?

  today i re-established contact with an older true - friend who is still a jw.

  in the fifty years that he has been baptized he invested a lot of time and effort in helping the needy and elderly, loyally taking up responsibilities in the org as an elder, organizer, speaker and shepherd.

  he is still out there as a lowly publisher, tirelessly going from door to door with only his bible.

  The ONLY redeeming value of Jehovah's Witnesses is that they follow the example of Jesus and claim citizenship in heaven and therefore will not actively engage in national killing sprees.

  This forum with its perverted hatred of JW's is blind to that fact. Even JW's don't get it. Most of what Jehovah's Witnesses think is important like their arguments about holidays, the cross, blood transfusions are mostly sectarian games. The real deal is overcoming nationalism. The Bible is a story about transcending human selfishness. The selfishness of nations is an unecessary exaggeration of the selfishness that helped humans evolve in the first place.

  The reason the Jewish zealots stoned Stephen is because he showed them how all the really important things in their history took place outside their beloved land and before it was their possession.

  Nationalism is the greatest evil on earth. Even if we are destined to die because we are evolved animals - war robs us of our natural death. War makes widows and orphans. Traditionally a slave that follows the commands of his owner has a greater life expectancy than a soldier. A slave has value by surviving - a soldier will most certainly be killed - whoever lives by the sword dies by the sword.

  What is the Future of the Watchtower Society?

  after reading comments on this site for a while and looking at what happens to other religions i feel the watchtower society has a long future in front of it.

  this is bad news all round, sad for us waiting for our families and sad for witnesses waiting for paradise.

  the reason i say this is that any organisation with 6 million members, billions in assets and little to spend their money on would find it very hard to go out of existence.

  I don't know if there is a flu going around but my hall was filled on the memorial and during the special talk - but lately they are using up a little more than half the seats. Six months ago you couldn't find any seats in the "choice" back rows. Now - no problem. Even if you come late a family of 4 can find seating in the back (on the sides).

  I attend a white suburban hall. Perhaps the Spanish congregations make up for it.

  6/6/6 months away, any ideas?

  june 6, 2006.. just thinking that this date won't roll around again in our lifetimes and it would be so fun to launch something on this date.

  any ideas?

  Terrorists look for just that kind of date to do their deeds.

  Of course I'm not making any predictions. (Been there-done that).

  It doesn't surprise me that more "seers" aren't predicting disaster.

  One reason is that "prophets" want to be unique in their predictions. They want to be known for calling it based on their clever calculations and intriguing grasp of historical currents.

  6-6-6 is too obvious. Anyone can claim they had a hunch.

  But it wouldn't hurt to have a couple weeks supply of food and water on hand. In this world that's always a good idea.

  Jehovah's WItnesses are only a mega-terrorist attack away from credibility.

  Something like a nuclear weapon destroying New York City would throw the whole world into a spin.

  Such an event has enough likelihood that insurance companies have calculated it into their risks or exempted themselves in their policies.

  Tightly run organizations are attractive in times of distress. Right after 9-11 I saw people at the KH I hadn't seen in years.

  But, if nothing happens they will lose their grip. The only reason people will sacrifice a "normal" life is if they feel they are in some kind of survival mode.

  The Watchtower emerged as an organization because they felt the end was imminent. Even though they failed at the date setting they persist in declaring it is "so close".

  It would be interesting to see how people view themselves and their place on JWD.

  Reification of the "cult" idea

  sometimes i must confess bewilderment at peoples talk of cults: i.e.

  comments like well, the witnesses display all the characteristics of a cult as noted by [insert anti-cult website here].

  has it occurred to anyone that the idea of a cult is a human invention, indeed a very peculiar modern human construct in comparison with the rest of social history?

  LR:

  JW's have usefully made themselves guiena pigs in bloodless surgery. Every pint of blood that isn't wasted needlessly is a pint of blood available for trauma victims who really need it. I am sure the techniques used on JW's have spread.

  Their aggravating preaching work and resultant persecution has improved freedom for everyone.

  They've also created a lot of home businesses to facilitate their pioneer ministry. Some have been so successful in their business models they don't have time to preach and have left the organization. What is the value to an economy of entrepreneurial activity.

  Their emphasis on verbal skills has improved the communication skills of hundred of thousands.

  Also who else would buy so many four door cars?

  Christian Scientists have cult like features. Their refusal of any medical care has provided a lab for testing mind-body relationships in disease.

  Do you want to find out the long term effects of caffiene - you've got an excellent control population in the Mormons.

  If a cult is too deadly it will die itself.

  You cannot be sure what valuable thing the whirlpools in the chaos will produce.

  As individuals we can just as easily be damaged by the so called conventional organizations. What about those who have invested years of their life in a company only to have it go bankrupt and they lose their pension? All organizations have the power to impinge on your personal freedom because all organizations require some sort of subordination for the sake of a greater good. People need to learn how to protect themselves in any organization

  What if you were really trying to be obnoxious and you didn't get mentioned?

  A "braying donkey" . A donkey has evolved several types of expression. Pain. Calling a mate perhaps. Warning of danger.

  I don't think of a donkey's braying as in effective.

  Everyone here pretty much knows what I am saying. Those that like this sort of thing will continue to participate. I detest it and will make sure I express myself again and again and again when this embarassing type of thread pops up.

  In the mean time I have lost a lot of respect FOR those who have been mentioned and apparently crave and relish this sort of thing that so much that they won't repudiate it.

  Or perhaps they just don't want to offend the people who mentioned them. In that case they are under the spell of flattery.

  Good job of reframing. However, you are just doing a little special pleading.

  Compliments and awards should be made in quiet - even though they aren't. Flattery is a form of seduction. It is hypnotic. It deprives the receiver of his freedom to please or displease.

  Everybody "thinks" they behave morally. Only the wise doubt their own.

  These posts have the power to define the whole forum. By saying the names of those you like you are mostly saying who you are.

  Those who feel they have made a substantial contribution in time and effort - without making the "list" ought to feel rejected and seriously consider if this is the right place and the right audience.

  As these individuals choose to post elsewhere the forum shifts in the direction of those praised. It is a "passive" form of disfelowshipping.
