  I am a "cultural" JW. You've heard of the distinction between an Orthodox Jew and a Cultural Jew? I look to the Watchtower because they are my "tribe".(3rd Generation JW going back to IBSA)

  Scandal is a modern past time. I feel bad that the Catholic Church has to suffer from this kind of accusation. Religion serves a strong function in reminding people that they are MORE than animals. But the MORE part is simply a thin veneer over our evolutionary history. There is a tendency of JW's to blame war on religion. This only happens when nationalism grabs religion for its own aims.

  When you discredit a religion you are doing untold damage to the moral compass of its members. In the case of child molestation this doesn't make people safer. It exposes them to the poison of relativism. It is unfortunate that Bowen's attack on JW's is a result of his JW training - which tends to be anti-philosophical. He lacks a broad context. The press is an all too willing player in this. The result is that children will NOT be measurably safer.

  Children need to be educated to the dangers of molestation just as they are to the dangers of drugs. Some parents feel it robs kids of their youth if you educate them in the MO of sexual predators. Kids need to be taught that NO one ought to touch them in certain places. They need to be taught that they shouldn't look at dirty pictures etc. You will never get rid of the predators.

  Some of these same questions are popping up all over.

  Legal action will stop a few molesters but "evolution" rears its ugly head.Yes I believe in evolution! Our animal and even early human ancestors thought nothing of grabbing siblings or any female in the troop that smelled like she was ripe irrespective of age. Society is a human "mental" construct. We restrict ourselves to one mate because it stops male competition for females. The result is a lot of idle time that can be spent building roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, churches, painting, composing beautiful music, etc. Some people don't get the message in their cortex that they have to keep the lizard brain in check.

  Religion is primarily an educational institution. And this is where the Watchtower has failed to protect its children. There should be at least one chapter in the Young People Ask book about resisting the sneaky approaches of molesters. And there should be an occasional Drama at the district assemblies dealing with the full sweep of the problem. A drama could show a committe dealing with a case of molestation - including the molesters MO, the pain and embarassment to the victim, and the shame and crisis for the perpetrators family and then the agony of the victims family deciding to go to the police.
  THIS more than some organizational policy would do the most good.

  The Watchtower has had a policy. You can have a great policy but by their own admission it isn't always followed. That is where education comes in. You don't need special professional training. You need awareness that this stuff can be prevented by concerned parents and savvy children.

  In the US you have to have a search warrant issued to go snooping
  into private records. Organizations (legal "entities") and
  individuals have a right to privacy. What kind of an investigation
  would you propose? Free rummaging through the Watchtower judicial
  records? How do you protect the privacy of people who might be in
  those records?

  The fact is that there is absolutely no way to know for sure how
  much of any kind of private activity is going on with members of
  any organization. You can only go by public record ie. the legal
  system. The numbers Bill Bowen tosses around are simply
  propaganda. Individual cases no matter how dramatic and how much
  press they get are simply anecdotal evidence. Do you know the
  difference between anecdotal evidence and statistical data? Quack
  cancer cures tend to be anecdotal evidence. Medical data is based
  on large statistical samples. Bill Bowen's group only have
  anecdotal evidence.

  Does the existence of sinners in an Earthly organization mean that
  God is not guiding it? Are you also naieve? Hopefully you can
  answer your own question. Half of Jehovah's Witness marriages end
  up in divorce (from my experience of 70 witness weddings in the
  last 40 years that I have attended). That's identical to society
  in general. Marriage doesn't do too well in spiritual paradise.
  Does that mean God is not guiding the organization? It is easy to
  make erroneous causal connections.

  Now we come to your (and other dissenters) gleeful aim. The
  Watchtower is about to get a "bloody nose". That is the real
  intent of this process. There is an old saying "if you want to
  beat a dog you can always find a stick". Soiling the reputation of
  Jehovah's Witnesses is not going to make children safer. You need
  to think about who has the main responsibility for the welfare of
  their children. It comes down to the parents. Society has been
  fighting prostitution for hundreds of years. It persists. (There
  are an estimated 300,000 child prostitutes in the US alone) The
  war on drugs is a dismal failure. You can stop some molesters but
  our animal heritage keeps poking through our socialized veneer. I
  personally would like to see a drama at assemblies about this
  issue. Brother Peter Feelia trying to seduce a young boy on a
  camping trip for example. That WOULD do some good!!!

  There is an area where Jehovah's Witnesses fail to protect their
  children - blood transfusions. This IS a horrible situation. This
  is where the Watchtower is REALLY vulnerable because they are the
  only religion with this bizarre interpretation of the scriptures.
  The child molestation thing is a convenient distraction.

  Mothers Day - is it celebrated?

  is mothers day (& fathers day) celebrated by the jw's?

  if it is not, can you provide a scriptural reason for the decision.

  The reason JW's don't celebrate Mothers day is because it is similar to Mother worship carried on by pagan greeks.

  This is obviously an erroneous conclusion. It is not the origins of something that make it good or bad but the intent. Honoring parents is a Biblical principle. One day a year to give "special" contemplation to Mother or Father seems like a good exercise.

  Actually most holidays can be traced back to Hallmark Cards.

  Then you ask a good question: "Do you mean the kind of talk found in every issue of the Watchtower magazine?"

  Yeah. That's exactly the problem. I have never felt the Watchtower was good at critical thinking.

  Of course. The Children. The most vulnerable people on earth.

  Bowen has never established that JW's have more cases of Child Abuse than the general population. I have seen figures that 1 out of 3 females and 1 out of 4 males claim they were sexually molested when they were children. Legal cases don't reflect those large numbers because it is apparent society in general doesn't handle this very well.

  Yet Bowen continues to sensationalize the JW situation with speculation about JW's being a hot bed of molestation. JW's promote strong family values. They openly discuss sexual matters as congregations. They don't allow those in leadership positions to watch even R rated movies. They frown on obscene jesting. They require chaperones on dates. They condemn songs with suggestive lyrics. They encourage moderate "non-sexy" dress. There is a whole lot of penis management going on. And they even throw out members who practice wrong-doing. The general wholesome mileu does more to prevent molestation than any amount of catching molesters in the act.
  If individual elders screw up they deserve to be sued. If the GB screw up they deserve to be sued also.

  Do you think humans will ever solve the problem by law enforcement? Parents have an obligation to keep an eye on their kids. Are the methods of child molesters some hidden secret? I have always been suspicious of any and everybody who is too friendly to my kids. My wife and I never NEVER had a night out because we didn't want anyone watching our kids. If there was a wedding and we couldn't bring our kids we just wouldn't go. We never even allowed our own kids to play in a room with the door closed. We weren't paranoid and neither of us were ever molested. What baffles me is that parents who themselves were molested allow the same things to happen to their kids. Go figure.

  Bill Bowen is not helping kids. He is mobilizing hatred for an organization IN THE NAME OF helping kids. He's going to experience a big let down some day when the reporters quit calling and the TV crews stop taping.

  Comf Gozz and others who don't have a clue about the meaning of justice.

  Innocent until proven guilty. JW's don't have to prove they are innocent. Those who are doing the accusing have to prove guilt. Prove that the numbers of molested children among JW's is higher than a similar cross section of the general population.

  Individuals may have been mistreated by local elders. Sue their behinds. Sue the GB if you can. But don't attack the religion and make sensational claims you can't back up.

  Bowen and his associates are NOT JW's. They are not being silenced. Obviously the press is all to willing to give Bowen a voice. The divorce is merely an official organizational action. The things Bowen has said publicly in these forums about JW leadership shows gross disrespect. If someone treats you disrespectfully don't you make it clear to them that you can no longer be friends.

  1. Since Bill Bowen behaves hypocritically THEREFORE he is a hypocrite. (That's my argument)

  2. Jehovah's Witnesses are a hot bed of child molestation. (Bills Argument)

  Bill Bowen makes inuendos & spins scenarios of the percentage of JW's that are molesters. He has no absolute numbers. Are some who claim to be JW's molesters?. Yes. Is it as bad as Bill Bowen claims? Without hard evidence NO!!. The only reason you accept such false claims is because you are blinded by your hatred of the Watchtower organization.
