Are they seriously quoting a scripture to justify using debit/credit cards for donations?
Not directly, no. The scripture, in context with the letter, is used to support the idea that assemblies and conventions are joyous occasions.
is this not inappropriate behavior in the eyes of jah?
surely it must.. .

H owever the money changers and their equipment, now automated, received special treatment
I may change my view on this. Though Jesus didn't have a problem with the treasury, he most certainly did with the money changers. (Matt 21:12)
I never equated the provision of credit card machines to that of money changers, but now that I think about, are they the same? Why would Jesus be upset over the service of money changers? Likely because there was some sort of profit involved for the money changers themselves in exchanging foreign currency. What's the difference with credit card machines? WTS doesn't charge a fee for this. However, make no mistake... profit is being made. The credit card companies charge a percentage to WT for this (or, perhaps to the local circuit or district... I'm not sure which). Would Jesus have overturned these credit card tables? Would he view it the same, as goods and services being sold in the temple? I don't know. There's a possibility that he would have.
One minor note... this is not being done in local KHs at this time, only at assemblies and conventions.
well it's true i just got off the phone with johnny the bethelite and here's the story(syke):.
it seem the brother letts was feeling kind of funny these days and has been hearing voices of the devil saying i'm gonna "get you" over and over again, so he's taken the matter up with jehovah in prayer, and now jehovah is saying conduct a search for any sparlock looking toys so the rest of the governing body at their weekly meeting decided to commission lett to take the lead since jehovah spoke to him, he should follow through.. so far they have collected 12 smurfs(one has to wounder how they ever got there?).
they found a sparlock like looking doll over at childrens animation department, probably just model use for animation making,, but it was enough to have the whole department up before a fact finding committee.. letts gave the morning talk the day after, that turned into a 3 hour lecture on the evils of idolatry, and lying, and keeping things from the governing body in this matter of the 12 smurffs and at the end he said we will have to wait and see what the fact finding committee finds out about sparlock the warrior wizard.

I dunno... I don't think this is unscriptural. Jesus actually sat around and intentionally watched people drop money into the treasury chest in the temple (thus observing the widow with two small coins). He didn't have a problem with that. He did have a problem with goods being sold in the temple, however. I don't see a difference between people donating by cash or check or credit card. Just my two cents.
i'm suffering from a vicious cycle.
put the research down - declare i'm not doing it anymore because it sickens me, ponder, make another aha connection, get sickened by it, put the research down, declare i'm not doing it anymore because it sickens me.. ponder.
i'm glad it's not just me.. i think my jw friend has been embarrassed one time too many with wt historical facts and so now he has asked me to help him understand my concerns and present him with some research that validates it.
NeverKnew, 1914 depends on the 2,520 years prophecy being a real prophecy to begin with. One has to believe that Daniel 4 connects to Luke 21:24 and that Daniel 4 has a secondary, far distant future fulfillment, when Daniel himself said the vision was fulfilled in Nebuchadnezzar. You can worry about the 607 date if you want, but, at least for me, this is only real if the 2,520 years prophecy is real. The Insight book speaks about this prophecy and basically says that since much of the book of Daniel is about future fulfillment, Daniel 4 must have a future fulfillment, too. However, there is no hard evidence to say this is so. It may interest you to find out where the 2,520 years prophecy came from to begin with (research that... you may be surprised.) Once you decide for yourself whether this is a made-up prophecy or not, only then can other pieces either fit into place or fall apart completely. It all depends on what you want to believe. I, for one, do not believe there is a 2,520 years prophecy. It's not stated in the Bible, not even indirectly. I can find no connection at all between Jesus' words at Luke 21:24 to Daniel's "seven times" except for the word "times", which is not a strong connection at all. And, I take Daniel at face value when he said the interpretation applies to Nebuchadnezzar himself. To me, there is no reason to think this has a second fulfillment. Just because some of Daniel's writings have a distant future fulfillment does not mean all of them do. For example, the writing on the wall had an immediate fulfillment, not a distant future one.

Thanks, Satanus. That's the 2006 printing, unfortunately (1988 copyright, but below it a little, it says 2006 printing), and I have the 2006 pdf already.

Does anyone know if a 1988 printing is available via PDF?

Definitely changed to "in our time". There may be other reference than below. I only searched throught a 2006 PDF version with the phrase "in our time" and compared to my wife's 1988 hard-copy.
I was going to comment that at least they were forthright about these changes given that they had the cut and paste KM insert with all the adjustments. However, I would be wrong in stating that. I have the adjustments from the KM insert, and these are NOT listed there.
Example. p.42 par. 5
1988: "In this 20th century, powerful nations, notably "the king of the north" and "the king of the south," have been struggling for world domination."
2006: "In our time powerful nations, notably "the king of the north" and "the king of the south," have been struggling for world domination."
The wording for the question on this paragraph also changed.
p. 209 par 12
1988: "In our century the cry that Babylon the Great has fallen has also been heard!"
2006: "In our time the cry that Babylon the Great has fallen has also been heard!"
The wording for the question on this paragraph also changed.
p. 271 par. 16
1988: "Further, in this 20th century alone, well over a hundred million people have been killed in hundreds of wars."
2006: "Further, in our time, well over a hundred million people have been killed in hundreds of wars."
