Terry, I totally agree with you. We all need to be able to discuss a subject without resorting to personal attacks against those who don't agree with our point of view. This includes us all, fomer Bethelite or former publisher. I have been appalled at how some of the recent threads had dissolved into name calling and putting people down. None of us know it all. I hesitate to comment for fear I will be attacked. I will mention one person, talesin, who impressed me with her discreet and gentle way of advising a new poster to start a new thread about his problem when he posted off subject on a recent thread. Although, I don't post much, I follow most of the posts (that interest me),from beginning to end. I hope we can start to have respect for each and every poster no matter how long they have been on this forum. It serves no purpose, nor does it advance our understanding of issues, when we insult and attack each other instead of discussing the subject presented. We can all learn from each other, or at least, see an issue from another person's perspective.

Why get "personal" when discussing a topic?
by Terry intrading insults happens among kids all the time.. intellectual development hasn't progressed to the point where they can present contrary ideas and opinions with persuasive appeal to reasons, facts and logic.. "i know you are; but what am i?".
"your momma's so fat....".
so, they fall back on childish mocking, provocation and personal attack.. as we grow older and have more education and sophistication our minds should mature---or so you'd think!.

Pascal's Wager, Best Answer I Have Heard
by Diest inmany of us have heard of pascal's wager.
basically that you can bet on god and receive an infinite reward, or you can bet against him and live an easier life for 80 years.
this guy proves that the wager is really misstated.. .

I watched the video and it made perfect sense to me. I could not find anything that he said with which I disagreed. He was articulate and gave a good argument for his understanding of not believing in God and the outcome if he did exist. Works for me.

I haven't watched the video yet but my thinking is that what is,is. No one knows if there is a God or not. No on knows what happens after death, but what is,is already established. If, as Pascal's Wager states (from memory), If I believe in God and he does not exist, I haven't lost anything. If I don't believe and he does exist, well I will have to deal with that and the consequences of not believing. If I believe and he does exist, maybe it will turn out well for me. That is not the reason I believe that there is an intelligent Being behind creation, but the Wager sounds good to me and I don't lose anything from believing.

I wonder if someone reaches 'self-actualization'... do they even think of it in such terms? My guess is not. They just... are who they are.
tec, I think you are right about these people not thinking they are "self-actualized," but I think they would have a feeling of being complete and being comfortable in their own skin and confident in themselves; maybe someone like Nelson Mandela, who did so much to help his people even though it meant years of prison for himself.

The wts actually works against it's members obtaing or reaching any, but maybe the first level of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. As mentioned by 00DAD, they even interfere with the most basic physiological need of sex, by placing rules on it that it scars it's members. The very word "self," such as in "self-esteem" or "self-actualization" is anathema to them, unless, of course, it applies to them as "God's channel of communication" meeting their needs. It's no wonder jws are so stunted in their growth. I can not recall any time that, as a JW, we were ever encourged to think of our "self" and any needs we might have that did not promote the organizations needs first.

Gosh, you don't really even get past 'Safety' let alone achieve 'Self-Actualization' on Maslow's pyramid when you're in Watchtower World
BOC, didn't you post all the infor on the "Safeguard your Heart" talk given at the DC. I thought it was a very good analysis of the talk.
