Norm, I'm wasting my breath.
I think I'll hop over to the Norway bashing thread.
in the west we are rightly very concerned with child labour and other such matters.
western consumer groups boycott firms that have their clothes made by factories using children.
i know this is usual in europe and i guess it is in the us too.. in other areas we see no such concerns.

Just because YOU say something is true, doesn't make it true of every American. Yes, SOME states in the US have capital punishment. SOME states have voted it out. The average American probably cares as much about Saudi Arabia as the average Norwegian does.
I'm sick of self-rightous, "we know best about the world and American's suck" kind of comments.
here are your generalizations:
Of course the US press doesn't print much about the appalling and barbaric violations of human rights that are carried out in that country, being the world’s largest producer of oil, the regime will get unlimited support from the US no matter what hideous things they do to their population. It is no coincidence that the majority of the suicide terrorists responsible for the September 11 tragedy came from Saudi. The "reasoning" seems to be that "sure they are evildoers but they are our evildoers" and they mostly stick to oppress their own populationI'm not saying that I agree with 100% of what my government does. Do you agree 100% with yours? However, being an AMERICAN, I don't like seeing America bashed anymore than you would like seeing NORWAY bashed. And if you don't understand that, then the JW's took away too many of your brain cells. You never hear any talk from consumers about boycotting Saudi-Arabian oil until they clean up their act. The American and other western consumers couldn't care less about what insane brutal rulers do as long as they have plenty of gas to move their fat asses around in their cars. Moral, nope, understandable, yes, admirable, no. Ethic, nix.

Really, Norm! I did read your post, and actually I agree that most western civilizations need to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to human rights. However, it gets a little irritating to read over and over again that Americans are this or that. Isn't it time we grew up and moved past such generalizations? Wouldn't you rather be known as someone who takes each person based on their own merits?
You are beginning to make me think that all Norwegians are racist.

Jan,
Have you been to the US?

I also need to add that not *all* states execute people. I believe the count is 18 out of 50. And there is a case before the supreme court right now that is exploring whether this (execution)should be considered "cruel and unusual punishment".

Are ALL people from Norway as irritating and as self-righteous as you two?
it is indeed strange, yet understandable to observe the "kneejerk" reactions you get when you point out possible .
flaw's with the mighty us of a, "god's own country".
even from people who should have learned not to have that .
I'm afraid I have to jump in here too. Kent, how do you know so much about Americans? Where did you come up with this:
How news is presented is interesting. How many US citizens do know the Winter Olymics is in the US these days? I bet most doesn't even know about it. Why? It's of no interest for media, since the US doesn't win a lot - and as such uninteresting.
I'm sorry, but you have just shown that people from Norway are as ignorant as those from the US. The olympic coverage is all over the place here (and I live in New York, about 2000 miles away from Utah). Are you getting all your info on Americans from TV?
Also, you do realize that the US mainland is almost 3000 miles from coast to coast? When American's take their holidays there is a wide variety of places to go - without leaving the US. You could liken someone going from France to Spain to me going from California to Arizona. We don't have the luxury of visiting another country everytime we drive 400 miles. LOL
We get 2 weeks average of vacation a year. Period. That's not a lot of time to travel. My husband and I have made it a priority to travel and have visited the UK, France, Canada and Mexico. We plan on go to Spain for our 10th wedding anniverary. Even from NY though, that's an 8 hour flight. How far is it for you? How much vacation do you get a year?
I don't think that most Europeans get all the facts about Americans straight. It's easy to blame us for just about everything.
edited because i can't spell worth a darn

okay, so i'm there at work, working merrily along[not], when elder wart nose comes over by me, and asks me questions about this anti-jw site, that he's heard about.
i ask him, where he got his info, "he's got his resources" he says.
so, i'm like, "so fucking what?".
I would go immediately to your supervisor or the owner of the business and explain the situation (including his threats of suing you for sexual harassment). Get this all documented right now! Write down everything that you remember him saying to you.
I worked at a company with an elder (sat in the cubicle right next to me) who was on the committee that df'd me (I got reinstated and then left the borg).
He would shun me at work and it was very apparent to all of my co-workers. I was embarrassed by him constantly! I explained the situation to my supervisor and she and the HR director had a talk with him. Treat me in a professional manner or find a new job. The company did not want a worker's compensation lawsuit against them for allowing him to place me in a "hostile work environment." He got a written warning that he had to sign. He then started treating me like a normal person.
Oh! The power of a threatened lawsuit! LOL
