good, I found the thread. The silence from all the rationalists is deafening . Maybe I shouldn't have posted, my contributions usually kill threads!

To the Friends.
by El Kabong inmany people here don't really know me.
i guess it's because i really only post occasionally.
i try not to get involved in the controversial topics or discussions, thus making me one of the unknowns.

El Kabong: Like many of the others here, I didn't see your post about your mother. I'm sorry about that 'cause I know exactly what it's like, I'm the caregiver for my mother now, she's had two strokes and a heart attack in the past year.
Most stroke victims recover a lot of the function in their limbs. Depending on where the stroke occurs, it may impair short term memory and certain cognitive functions. But there is usually improvement, especially if she got to the hospital quickly.
I also know what you mean about your mother being your last link to the religion. I am not that far along in my "disconnection" from the borg, but after my mother passes away I doubt very very much if I will have anything more to do with JWs.
I don't post as often as others and at times it seems as though I'm the major thread killer on the board! I know how it feels to be overlooked, but I know that many more read posts than those that comment on them, so you have definitely touched people.
I hope you continue to check in now and again. Please let me know how your mother is doing - you can PM me if you want (although you'll have to allow for some time to pass before I respond 'cause I don't often get onto the board on weekends).
All the best.

THE WATCHTOWER- An informative piece of toilet paper

was carried in the New York Times, Newsweek
Do you have the dates? If I could get on-line and find the articles I'd like to make copies, for my own reference and to give to others. I have mentioned the child abuse cases to my boss (a lawyer). I work in a large law firm, and as you may guess, they are very well read and well informed. No one has ever asked me about anything dealing with Witnesses, and I know it's not because they want to spare my feelings - they're lawyers, remember . My boss watches CNN, ABC, CBC (the Canadian news network) etc. and she never heard a thing. I told her about the CBC program dealing with child abuse, and it was the first she heard. I'm glad it was mentioned in the media but it seems that it is barely a blip on the radar screen, non-JWs just can't be bothered a great deal about destructive sects. I mean, I don't perk up my ears too much about the Raelians or Hare Krishnas, and I'm sure there are bizarre and hurtful things happening to their members.
I do hope though, that JWs saw those programs, more so than the non-JWs. Eventually they won't be able to stand the cognitive dissonance anymore. That's what happened to me. I didn't even see the Dateline program, another dub told me about it. And then I knew. In spite of the dubs grumbling about apostate lies, etc., I knew the program was true, it was as though I had been waiting for the final nail in the coffin.
So for the sake of other JWs, I hope they've read and seen the shows/papers you've mentioned, and don't bury their heads in the sand.

If several posters here say that they did, well that may show that they are the sort of witness that was going to end up here tonight rather than preparing for Sunday's Watchtower sudy
Bluesbrother: I think you're right!! I used to get down on myself for thinking too much. I'd read something, or hear about some tragedy, then I'd start trying to rationalize how the naked woman/talking snake scenario could justify such unrelenting horror and tears throughout the centuries and it never added up.
Or I'd wonder about silly things such as the digestive system of cats, how they need to eat meat in order to properly assimilate protein, so why would Jehovah change their digestive tracts after Adam and Eve disobeyed, since according to dubdom everyone and everything ate vegetation in the beginning. Why pick on cats and not elephants?
There is absolutely no logic to WTS doctrines, and after I got too tired of beating myself up over not being able to understand it, it slowly started to dawn on me that it probably wasn't me after all.
Yup, Newsweek and Time are elements of the debil all right!!

Nos: I know what you mean. I guess it just rankled because I had to read other stuff like Newsweek, etc., or else I would have gone stark, raving mad. A steady diet of WTS publications (all of which I read dutifully for too many years) always left a lot to be desired, I was always running on empty, so to speak, so I had to get info elsewhere. I do understand where you're coming from, and agree.
It would be great if the child abuse issue would make the headlines in major papers, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be enough of a priority for many news organizations, who too often have to please their advertisers.

We all know that JWs get ALL their information from The Watchtower. It's rare that you see MacLeans, Time, or People magazine in a JW's home.
We can bash JWs all we want but this kind of generalization is ridiculous. I was about as hardcore a dub as you could find, and I regularly read Time, MacLeans, National Geographic, newspapers, New Yorker, etc. etc. I never considered People magazine worthy of my time, then or now.
And JWs don't get a lot of information about what the organization is doing from these magazines/news sources because the WTS is a very small blip on the world scene, not at all important to people in general and do not merit being mentioned in said sources.
it's all making the headlines and television
The child abuse problem was detailed on the CBC - where else have you seen an investigative journalism piece about it? Headline news?? If it was in MacLeans I didn't read it. Time? The New York Times? The Washington Post? C'mon!
Does the world in general give a sh&t if the WTS was involved with the UN? Of course not. Why would they headline it?
I know plenty of "worldly" people who do not regularly read Time or MacLeans, or even many newspapers. Let's not throw around demeaning comments about JWs when it just isn't true. The WTS provides ample ammunition on its own without our inventing anything.
If indeed the above mentioned problems have been headlined in various media sources, I would appreciate you're posting the details.
And my apologies in advance if I am totally clueless about this but I just haven't seen the evidence of what you mention .

My Cat Smells of Perfume
by Satanus intime to lighten up a bit.
i noticed that my cat has a perfume smell.
it took a while for me to figure out where she got it.

One of my cats loves soap, for whatever reason she finds it a tasty great right after her Natural Choice Seafood Mix. She'll hop onto the bathroom counter and lick the bar of soap several times. Right now I've got a honey-glycerin bar but I think she prefers the green apple scented one. My other cat, lovable as she is, is too dumb to figure out any other non-feline food sources. She's almost ten and still isn't sure the fridge is where her can of food comes from most of the time.

Don't let them get away with "logically we can see that ..." Ask them to prove every single point they make. After all, that's what they say they can do.
For instance, if they try and prove that 1 day equals 1 year (they'll use Numbers for that one), make sure they show you the link between Numbers and Daniel and Revelation, i.e. why are they using a Mosaic law covenant rule to interpret Daniel's prophecy and how can they use it for Revelation when Jesus did away with the Law? If mathematical gymnastics were necessary Jesus would have reiterated it for his followers. He didn't, so JWs can't.
Beware of catch phrases "it is clear that ... " "it is safe to assume that ..." etc. Don't them skip all over the place, keep them to one subject until they prove it with the Bible and the Bible only.
That is, of course, if you get that far. They may get frustrated at your un-sheep-like behaviour (as in, sheep are dumb and just follow whoever gives them something to eat) and give up on you as not being sincerely motivated. At any rate, have fun!
