Merde! I should be working right now but can't help reading these threads. I know this is an English board but I hope the mods indulge me this time.
There are several links on the above-mentioned site, many in French. It is "pour débutants" - for beginners (like myself also, Corinne), so easy to understand for non-scientific folk like me.
It shows the pseudo-science of creationists and their attempts at giving a scientific veneer to their arguments. It also explains the fact of evolution from a scientific definition.
Je retourne au travail maintenant mais je pourrai peut-être faire de la traduction - if time permits, I may be able to translate some stuff back and forth between French and English for Corinne's sake and for everyone's understanding. That is, I'm at work and actually have to do some stuff over the next few hours, so if the posts are short I will perhaps have the necessary time.
It is just after noon here, and I will try and check back in mid-afternoon.
Abaddon: I just quickly looked up some references to Ediacaran fossils, pretty fascinating stuff. Have saved the link to read later.

Need Some Education On EVOLUTION? Start Here! Perry & Axal take note!
by Seeker4 inperry started a thread on evolution/atheism, which from his very first post showed an incredible ignorance of evolution and natural selection.
axal's comments on the thread were just asinine - how all the atheists in his area were at the strip clubs fighting over women and fornicating!
i have to say that i live in a small town and have been here for half a century, and i couldn't name five people that i know here who are atheist.

Study Detects Recent Instance of Human Evolution
by zagor instudy detects recent instance of human evolution by nicholas wadea surprisingly recent instance of human evolution has been detected among the peoples of east africa.
it is the ability to digest milk in adulthood, conferred by genetic changes that occurred as recently as 3,000 years ago, a team of geneticists has found.. the finding is a striking example of a cultural practice the raising of dairy cattle feeding back into the human genome.
it also seems to be one of the first instances of convergent human evolution to be documented at the genetic level.

Special Christmas Gifts (1 daughter, 3 nephews)
by Abaddon inthis christmas is a special one.. first of all it'll be the first i've celebrated with my eldest daughter.
she turned 16 this summer and moved to the netherlands from the uk to live with me and my fiance.
she is absolutely delighted with trees and tinsel and everything about it; her face when we went to the christmas decorations department was a classic... she has her own tree in her bedroom and i swear it's about to go through the floor it has so many fricking decorations on it... talk about tinseltown.... it is also our first christmas in our new house, which we moved to to make my daughter's move possible.. and finally, over the past few weeks i have learnt that three of my nephews have told their parents they are not going to meetings any longer.

This is the part that struck me:
I question the way you distinguish what the Bible says from what the Society says (God's organization). When we became Witnesses, we understood that Jehovah gives us his guidelines and directions via His earthly organization. You cannot pick and choose which of the JW guidelines you want to follow - this is an all-or-nothing thing.
They acknowledge that they're not following the Bible; they know that the Society's rules differ from Bible principles but, whatever the WTS says, that's what they'll do.

I'm so terribly sorry for what you're going through. It's horrible enough dealing with the emotions of losing a parent, but to have such callous family members at a time when families should be pulling together is just awful. What a despicable, hateful cult!
Please give yourself time to grieve before deciding what course of action you need to take concerning your family.
hugs

Kid-A:
Generated feelings and emotions within the brain are the biochemical effects of neurotransmitters, nothing more, nothing less. They are NOT proof of anything nor are the evidence of anything. They are neurophysiological sequelae in response to sensory inputs. You are free to ASCRIBE these generated feelings to some god-like entity, but such an action constitutes neither evidence nor proof of anything outside of one's own neuronal constructs.
And neuroscientists are doing work on recreating the "god effect." You've got to read this article, it's long, but wait until you get to page 4 and see the hypothesis the writer puts forth concerning Mormons and JWs.

Thanks for the info, Jayhawk. One more question - where exactly do you spray? the underside as well as the sides? Do you have exposed beams? I have the original (massive) beams and posts holding up the house; the previous owner had some foam insulation been sprayed along the side walls.
And thanks for the reminder about compact fluorescents. I had started changing everything over but didn't finish.

This winter I am using car undercoating to seal up the whole underneath of my home. Believe me, I am all about better ways of maintaining my lifestyle without further damage to the environment.
How cold does it get where you live? And how do you apply undercoating seal to the underneath of your house? I have an old house (built in 1900) and a crawl space (dirt floor) basement.
