  R&R, as you saw above, I agree with you that the events described in the Olivet Discourse (up to the parable of the fig tree and "this generation") are referring to events in the 1st century. And it is not just the WT who claim that those events have a more future fulfillment. But the surrounding context definitely places them in the events of the Jewish-Roman War of 66-73 CE.

  But having said that, look at a comparison of foretold events that Rev 16 describes laid side-by-side with Mt 24 & Lk 21 here. There are obvious similarities, and a few differences also. One could understand some thinking that the Olivet prophecy and Rev 16 are describing the same thing. They aren't. But they are similar enough to lead some to think they are.

  It appears that both follow a similar pattern. Yet they each have differences because one is a local event and the other is a world wide event.

  Even the scripture about preaching to the nations was really written about preaching the Roman lands.

  You are correct CrazyGuy. Romans 16:25-26 & Col 1:23 agree. And "inhabited earth" from Mt 24:14 was often used to refer to the Roman Empire. (E.g. Luke 2:1)

  If you look at the whole chapter (Mark 13), verses 1 & 2 give the reason for the disciples questions in verses 3 & 4. Verses 1 & 2 are discussing the Jewish temple and a prediction by Jesus that it will be leveled. So, naturally, the disciples questions in verses 3 & 4 are directly related to that.

  At the other end, verses 28-31 are a sort of summary parable describing the events just described (verses 5-27) and Jesus describes these things as being fulfilled within "this generation." An unbiased reading would place everything between verse 5 and verse 27 as something Jesus was predicting for (then) contemporary Jews. Even if one doesn't understand how verses 24-27 could have happened back then, the surrounding context argues that Jesus was expecting those things to happen within that 'generational' time frame.

  Claiming that verses 5-27 must have a dual fulfillment is, in reality, an admission that they don't understand all of what Jesus was talking about.

  It is only starting at verse 32 that there is a hint of some future judgment that the disciples have to be ready for. The events in verses 5-27 have the disciples being given a way of escape and salvation from what was predicted for the temple and that Jewish generation. (verses 14-20)

  it seems, you can not research many of the older publications on society's web site anymore.

  for the obvious reasons, that they don't want people to go back and read about all the false prophecies, changing guide lines (new light that became old light that became new light once again) and the just plain stupid stuff they have said over the years.

  i not quit sure what publications they have blocked.

  at the time of this particular case, william hudgings acknowledged being the corporate secretary of the people's pulpit association and acknowledged that his daily duties included the administrative charge of printing of the watchtower magazine, the bible student's monthly, the kingdom news, and other watchtower publications.. (hudgings was also re-elected to the watchtower society board of directors in january 1919.

  Was J.F. Rutherford - Exonerated?

  one of the cornerstones of the watchtower society's claims about the 1918 trial of joseph f. rutherford and seven other co-defendants, is that the trial was a travesty of justice, where the defendants were railroaded off to prison.. to make their point, the society has repeatedly stated that joseph rutherford and his fellow defendants were "exonerated" of all charges, and subsequently released from prison fully vindicated.

  the society also attributed this 'victory' to jehovah's hand in matters, restoring the symbolic 'two witnesses' spoken of in revelation, and thereby, reactivating the kingdom preaching work.. what actually transpired is that the convicted defendants filed a petition for a "writ of error.

  " (trial transcript, pages 1-10, parts 1-30 ) the writ of error was allowed by the trial court, judge howe, and granted by the district court judge chatfield, whom the society earlier objected to and had removed from their trial, because they felt he would not be fair to them.. what does this mean?

  what were the writers of the bible telling christians when they wrote : “stop keeping company with anyone called a brother who is sexually immoral or a greedy person or an idolater or a reviler or a drunkard or an extortioner, not even eating with such a man.” (1 corinthians 5:11) regarding everyone who “does not remain in the teaching of the christ,” we read: “do not receive him into your homes or say a greeting to him.

  for the one who says a greeting to him is a sharer in his wicked works.” (2 john 9-11.

  Several things I would point out (not that a PIMI would care):

  1. This is how you treat someone who "is called (present tense verb) a brother/sister." The fact that the announcement says that " so-and-so is no longer one of JWs" ─ Under any other circumstances anyone who isn't a JW would also not be "called a brother." At the WT Study non-JWs who answer are addressed as Mr. or Mrs. or Ms., not "Brother/Sister . . ." So it is pure hypocrisy and vindictiveness on the WT's part to treat a DFed one as if they are still "called a brother/sister."

  2. No one, besides the Judicial Committee knows what the charges are against the person being DFed. But the letter (1 Cor) is addressed to "the church of God that is in Corinth." (1Co 1:2) Not to the elders in Corinth. Yet the WT ignores this and keeps the reasons for the DF secret. No one else knows what the DFing is for. Even if the person has taken some stand based on a conscience matter. They are treated the same as an adulterer or pedophile. It is pure wickedness on the WT's part to enforce things this way. They also do it this way to fend off defamation law suits. So they protect themselves against problems with DFing, but expect the R&F to accept any pain the procedure causes. Pure hypocrisy!

  3. When the problem is doctrinal, the WT holds the R&F to whatever is currently in print. But the WT allows itself to depart from that. And if one was DFed for not accepting some teaching or understanding, and the WT eventually changes to the teaching the DFed one held to, then, there is no pardon for the DFed one. In reality, that one was DFed for not being obedient to the GB, not for disbelief. This also makes the WT guilty of lying. They condemned the person but lied about the real reason.
