does the wt always carefully phrase sentences so as to never take blame?
by sowhatnow inim recalling a time when i sat and circled words in a watchtower article, indicating strongly the fact that it is in fact the writters opinion.. however just the suggestion in the sentence these words are ignored.. for example.
it is our understanding.
we believe this to be the case.

Tell me what they are thinking or planning to do.
by LogCon inthis is the situation.. ten years ago two fleshly brothers and their wives, [ all are jw's and one is an elder] defrauded an elderly couple [ she was a jw/ he was friendly]out of the possession of their home and property.
one year after that, they took the life savings of the elderly couple and parked it in an account, without their knowledge.
when the old couple found out what happened, the four co-conspirators refused to return anything.

milola asked,' Why, if you were so close to this couple, didn't you stop it from ever happening? Is there an estate that the money is going to go to? Or are you going to reap the reward?...'
No rewards for me. Since this crime occurred I have become involved with helping the elderly, mainly due to my witnessing the suffering this elderly couple were subject to.
Estate issues are long past.
Why didn't I stop it? It seems to be a simple case of stopping a crime. How do you stop a crime of deception, fraud and theft. When it is planned by several people, on the surface it appears legitimate, but only later do all the facts come out. To the victim, the suffering is clear and painful. To the bystander it is unclear. I previously posted about a fraud artist that moved from Vancouver B.C. to Spokane, Washington. Her name is Doris Nelson. She ran a ponzi fraud operation. After the fact it is easy to see how people were duped. Many lost large amounts of money. Some their life savings. Some may ask, why didn't someone stop this crime. After many years the federal authorities in the U.S. finally brought an end to it, with a recent conviction and sentence of nine years in prison.
Asking why I didn't stop this crime from happening is similiar to one asking,' Why don't you tell Jehovah's Witnesses in your family the truth about the Watchtower, so they can get out'? Some things just have to run the course of time. If they can 'Wait on Jehovah' I can 'Wait on the Justice System'.

Ajax said,' ...
I believe there is a statute of limitations on fraud in Canada. it extends not from the time of the fraud, but from the time the fraud was discovered.
Makes sense when you think about it...'
My information is the following:
More Serious Offenses
- For anything other than a summary or misdemeanor offense, there is no statute of limitations in Canada. Therefore, for crimes such as major theft, murder, rape or the like, you can be charged at any point in the future. Warrants have been known to exist for more than 20 years in some cases.
Civil Law
- Canada provides a statute of limitations for uncollected debt as well. In 2003, the Canadian Supreme Court decided that future debt could not legally extend beyond six years. Parliament subsequently changed this provision and increased it to a 10-year period.
Additional thoughts:
It is indeed an interesting situation where an elder has to fear being criminally charged.
Will he take some pre-emptive measures to mitigate the damage to his reputation in the congregation?
I also wonder what the many 'child molester elders' did to soften the blow to their reputation when the law became involved. No doubt they denied to the extent they could and cast doubts on the character of the alledged victims. It would be interesting to see data that reveals the common thread that connects each 'criminal elder' when it comes to denial.
At what stage did they really start the denial?
How extreme was it?
How agressively did they attack the victims?
Also, what was the response of the body of elders?
Were they complicit in any cover-ups?
Could they be considered 'accessories after the fact'?
This could even be a chapter in criminal law books that analyzes the behaviour of religious leaders when authorities make investigations into crimes in their fold. What is their 'modus operendi' when the law comes calling? Future criminal investigators could examine the common threads and indicators, the standard methods religious leaders use to protect their own members and their organizations reputation.

Bobcat asked, ' ...Is there a statute of limitations that might leave them an out? (I'm from the US and not totally familiar with Canadian law, nor US law for that matter...'
I asked the R.C.M.P. Corporal if there was a statute of limitations on fraud and theft. He assured me that there IS NOT!
Good news for everyone in Canada that has suffered as a victim and been hesitant to come forward to the authorities. I don't know about U.S. laws but Canadian law applies right acroos the country in all Provinces. I think it is much more organized than the U.S. Nothing against you and your kin but Canada does not have the gun slinger, pioneer mentality that seems to run in some of the individual States. The U.S. states seem very protective of their power to enforce their own laws. I may be wrong.
Probably am.
Regards.

Sophia: Mommy, can we go for a walk?
Mom: Okay, Sophia.
Sophia: This is nice Mommy, walking down the street in our neighbourhood. Look at all the trees.
Mom: My, they are so beautiful. Who made the trees Dear?
Sophia: Jehovah and the flowers and the animals.
Mom: Very good. You are so smart and such a deep thinker too.
Sophia: Thank-you Mommy. I do a lot of thinking. And I am starting to do a lot of reading too.
Mom: Oh?
Sophia: Yes. After the meeting at the Kingdom Hall I go to the library and read. That’s why you don’t see me for a while after the meetings.
Mom: I thought you were just playing with the other children.
Sophia: No, I’ve been doing a lot of reading these last few weeks.
Mom: Oh? What are you reading?
Sophia: Some of the older publications. Old Watchtowers, old books by a guy named Joseph Rutherford. I think he used to be in charge of Jehovah’s Witnesses a long time ago. Do you know about Joseph Rutherford Mom?
Mom: I know a little bit. Not much. We don’t really talk about him much. Why are you so interested in him?
Sophia: Well, because he used to be in charge of us and he said some really interesting things.
Mom: What things?
Sophia: Well, he said that the faithful men of old were going to come back to earth and live in a house he bought for them in a place called San Diego. I think that is in the United States. He said Samson and King David and some others were going to come back in the year 1925.
Mom: Oh?
Sophia: And you know what Mom?
Mom: What?
Sophia: It never happened. None of what he said about that ever happened. Another guy named Fred said that Joseph Rutherford said he ‘ made an ass of himself ’.
Mom: Sophia, don’t use dirty words.
Sophia: What do you mean Mom? Ass means donkey doesn’t it? Is donkey a dirty word?
Mom: No, it isn’t, but…
Sophia: I didn’t think it was. Maybe you confused ass with another word because it is in the Bible, right? And then Joseph Rutherford told everyone that millions of people were not going to die, but they all died, and then he told everyone not to get married because the new system was coming soon and it never happened. And then Jehovah’s Witnesses starting getting all confused, just like you got confused Mom, and they thought the higher authorities were the government people and then they thought they were the elders and then they thought they were the government people and then they thought they were the elders again and then…and then… sheeesh, they got so confused I don’t even think they know what they think about that anymore. And then Fred said Armageddon was coming in 1975 and then it didn’t come and then….
Mom: Slow down Dear, my head is spinning. So many things I haven’t even heard of before. Are you sure they said these things?
Sophia: Yes Mommy, it’s all in those old books in our Kingdom Hall library. Mommy, what is it we say about Jehovah’s Witnesses? What do we say we are in?
Mom: The Truth Dear. We are ‘ in The Truth’.
Sophia: Oh right, the Truth. We are in ‘The Truth’.
Mom: That’s a good girl.

zeb said, ' ...I fear that you are assuming they will be humble and honest when confronted.. they wont...'
I have no such assumptions, however, no one will ever be able to say I never gave them a chance to seek mercy, 'while it may still be found'.
New York44M said, ' Keep in mind they have a lot on their plate and may not run with it. So, don't be surprised that you never hear from them again...'
No fear about them forgetting about it. I intend to push this right to the Attorney General of British Columbia. This is not totally personal. This is to protect society, in particular the elderly, from criminal abuse. I hate that the elderly are targeted. This ten year old crime is not looking back. It is looking forward. Just like child abuse cases in court are starting to set precedents and attracting public attention, I desire that crimes against the elderly do the same thing through court convictions and sentences.

hoser said, ' ...What will they be doing? Hiding assets? Crapping their pants? I don't know? I've never been much of a mind reader..'
Hiding the assets is not an option. Crapping their pants? Possibly.
Another point of interest. Some of the witnesses to the crime are JW elders who choose to do nothing at the time, though the old couple screamed at the top of their weak, elderly voices.
I have given them an opportunity to make a statement, thinking that perhaps they will sue for peace and come clean. Lay all of the dirty laundry on the table and beg for my mercy.
Will they show a contrite heart, hoping this is as far as it goes?

Billy the Ex-Bethelite said,' ...I'd talk to a lot of attorneys that specialize in such matters...'
They have one attorney that has represented them in civil suits for several years. He brags that he is also a criminal lawyer. He actually is quite incompetent. Having witnessed his incompetency, will they bypass him and seek out someone they do not know or stick with the lawyer they know?
Is this a case of Better the Devil you know than the Devil you do not know?
My experience is that such situations effect people like a deer caught in the headlights. They lose their clear thinking ability and stick with the lawyer they know.
