as a teenage jw, i grew up believing that i was not going to finish high school nor would i get old and have to die like my grandparents did.
well, i did finish high school, as did my children and my grandchildren and old age has not been kind to me.
i don't like to look at pictures from 40 years ago, from a time when i was healthy and i had the goal of "stay alive till 75.
Sometimes I wonder how the JWs deal with growing old. Do they really actually keep believing that the end is right around the corner, or do they just accept that the GB doesn't have a clue, but that the end will still come... eventually?
I remember spotting my first sign of aging and getting that sinking feeling that it had all been one big fairytale....

Leolaia - no, I probably don't have anything beyond what you just said. My superficial research only lead to my conclusion that the dead sea scrolls still don't prove any prophecy written before the fulfilment (something that as a JW I had taken for granted. I had believed that the dead sea scroll fragments dated pre-B.C.E. contained the messianic prophecy and the struggle between the king of the north/south.
I guess I should have read more on what has already been posted on the Daniel book. I'm new to this site.

The scrolls skip text that would be in 9 and move on to 10. I'll try to find the sources (they were scholarly) and will elaborate on my hypotheses later...
just curious, something i've noticed only lately.
i'm in the mix within the congregation, stay late after the meeting is over, converse with quite a few people afterwards, make plans for saturday and sometimes sunday service and yet i feel so awfully alone walking to my car afterwards.
i feel lonely when i'm talking and laughing with people after the meeting.
I loved the meetings mostly for the social aspect. We'd go to the pub after the weeknight meeting and for brunch after the Sunday meeting. I was tempted to go back to meetings after my fade simply because I missed the social aspect. And during pub/brunch, we usually did not discuss the meeting. Unless something funny had happened and we could make fun of the speaker. Or once every 6 months, we'd actually have a good speaker, and someone would gush about the great talk.
Of course, I admit it was a bit clicky. I'm sure some others from the congo felt excluded. But I personally had loads of fun and miss these friendships. Sure, they were conditional friendships, but I still think they are nice people - only misdirected.

Once I started looking at archeological and scientific evidence, there was so little left to base any belief that the bible could have any superhuman origin. I did cling to the book of Daniel for a while.
But I couldn't find ANY evidence that any of the prophecies were written before they happened. The prophecies that refer to the Roman empire & the Messianic prophecies (which would not have happened yet for those scrolls dated B.C.) were not in the Dead Sea Scrolls (chapter 9, the last part of chapter 11 and chapter 12 are all missing from the dead sea scrolls that date BC).
If I ever find one miniscule shred of evidence that the bible could have some sort of superhuman origin, I would look at it. For the believers, I wonder why god, in all his superpowers, would not have caused at least one solid piece of evidence that this book wasn't written by some nutcases and policians.
