(jumping in way too later here...)
I recall the episode of Penn&Teller's Showcase series "BullSH**!" where they covered the bible.
The parallel Penn kept coming back to, to make his point (said sarcastically):
Elvis didn't do no drugs!!!
The point is: some people believe Elvis didn't do drugs, even though there was/is ample evidence to the contrary. If such an (incorrect!) opinion could be propagated so soon after Elvis's death, in this "age of information", how accurate can we assume are the stories written decades after Jesus's (alleged) time on earth? If Elvis could be elevated to near god-like status in the minds of his fans, how much more so could someone who actually CLAIMED god-like status?
Elvis didn't do no drugs!!!

A Christian question, but applies to all thinking Christian too!
by free2beme inno longer being a christian, it has become a mind opening experience to look back and see certian things i once ignored or just brushed off.
yet now i can not help but see these things and wonder why other christians do not.. if you have ever studied greek, roman or any other cultures religions in history.
then you have no doubt read their legends, about gods and how things came to be, and no doubt you have enjoyed these and at the same time you must have wondered how people actually bought this enough to make it a religion.

Does the WTS disfellowship mentally challenged people?
by Elsewhere in.
has anyone ever seen a situation where the wts disfellowhiped someone who is autistic, retarded or otherwise mentally challenged?.
i wonder if the elders give them more leeway knowing that they are not always capable of making decisions as well as a normal person.. .

TIMMY!
OK, seriously now.
Mental problems presents a special problem for dubs, and frankly for other branches of Xtianity too. How can someone "belive, repent, and be saved" if they don't understand (due to mental problems)? Of course, it is even more difficult for a "works based" religion like Watchtowerism, where you have to do more than simply repent and accept Jesus.
Frankly, the bible ignores mental problems and treats all problems as "demonization". Not surprising for a book written by many and various goat herders and fishers that were not familiar with the empirical science.

canned responses
by carla inhusband claims that there are no 'canned responses' taught at the kh.
the fact that i partially saw a little sheet of his that did in fact have canned responses to a householders questions & comments makes me think he just considers these suggestions.
isn't part of the meetings on tues & thurs specifically geared toward how to talk to non jw's?

I agree with the other responders: the book Reasoning From The Scriptures is a "canned response" training book -- OVER 400 pages long!!!! That is a lot of canned response!
My proof (to offer to your spouse):
pages 9-15 -- "Introductions For Use in the Field Ministry" (i.e. not only are the responses canned, but the introductions are canned too) I believe the monthly "Kingdom Ministry" also has monthly "Introductions" to use with the current "offer"
pages 15-24 -- "How you Might Respond to Potential Converstaion Stoppers"
The remainder of the book, from subject "Abortion" (page15) to subject "World" (page 435) is a concise encylopedia of canned responses on various specific "bible based" topics.
According to the "How to Use" introduction (page 7):
"This publication has not been prepared for the purpose of helping anyone to "win arguments" with people who show no repect for the truth. Rather, it provides valuable information thta is meant to be used in reasoning with individuals who will allow you to do so."
In other words: these canned responses (aka valuable information) are only intended for easily brainwashed people that are dumb enough to accept this garbage unquestioningly. Don't waste your time with anyone who already knows most of this "valuable information" is nonsense. -

This "Steve Klemetti" chap sounds like he has never, ever considered what XJWs have to say. He dismisses XJW arguments in one broad sweep of his hands (his first mistake) and then has the (crazy?!?!) idea that saying statements & publications that disagree with WTS doctrine is the same as truck bombing in OKC and the attacks of 9-11.
Steve Klemetti, if.. I mean, WHEN you read this. Do you really, REALLY think that publishing factual information regarding the imperfection of the WTS and the JW religion (imperfection which you freely admit, so why are you so upset about it?) is equivalent to the truck bombing at OKC or the attacks of 9-11???
Seriously, do you really, REALLY think that public opinion is as dangerous as murder?
If you truly do....
How would you feel if the Catholic Church (the chief part of Babylon the Great, the World Empire of False Religion, according to current WTS/JW teaching) were to label WTS/JWs as "terrorists" because of all the attacks WTS/JWs have made against them over the years? Put the shoe on the other foot and see how it fits. -

Jehovah's Witness! Nothing but a period in the world novel.
by free2beme inoften, more so then not, my former witness friends have the habit of wondering why more people do not hear or know about things witnesses do in modern history.
yet in time, from being on boards like this one and from knowing far more people that are not witnesses, then ones that are or were.
the crazy acts of the early 1900's that gained public attention, were replaced with a more invisable conformed organization that really does very little to be noticed.

That the world really does not notice the Witness religion, or revolve around it, when it seemed so important in the past.
==============
I agree completely. I think there is a human tendency to assume that one's personal world view is recognized and familiar to everyone else; in fact each person has a unique world view.
Your point also leads to this conclusion: *IF* the JWs have "the Truth" (ie we are living in the last days, warn the people before Armageddon) then they have done a terribly pathetic job of warning the world, and have not even lived up to their own standard of being god's messenger to the world.
For 100 years they have been "putting the world on notice that Jesus kingdom has been established and all nations of the world must accept Theocratic rule", and yet, I have yet to meet ONE person that knows anything about JWs (and their message) other than the things you already mentioned. They don't even know *WHY* JWs don't celebrate holidays/birthdays, nor *WHY* they go door knocking, so even the few things generally known about JWs are not at all understood.

There were some good things about the organisation...
by Do I Stand Alone? ini have read a number of experiences in this discussion forum and quite frankly, i would have to agree that many, if not all, were pretty terrible experiences if not all together traumatic.
i know that my personal 9-11 tragedy resulted in finding out that the watchtower society was involved with the united nations.
that pretty much said it all as far as my "career" in the organisation was concerned.

I mostly disagree.
Public Speaking? Those who already had a predisoposition to public speaking did see some improvement; frankly however the "Ministry School" gave FAR TOO FEW opportunities for most speakers to actually improve and get comfortable. I can think of several TERRIBLE TMS students who never, ever got any better.
Studious? NO. Disciplined? Yes. I learned what it meant to be studious (and not a parrot) at University -- you know, a real University where they have crazy ideas like a published cirriculum and knowledge testing and advancing to higher levels end of terms (i.e. eventually you get to graduate and leave Univ, but nobody graduates from WTS; and the only advancement is, if you have testicles, you can become an elder and be in charge of the regurgitation of the nonsense). Honestly, the "study" required to be a JW was similar to about grade SEVEN in intensity. A quick review, memorize a few facts, underline them, (no need to memorize!!!) and actually don't bother to truly understand. They provide both the questions, and the answers. Don't think too hard, we don't want you to ask about the man behind the curtain.
Sales? Only the most primitive, basic form: door-to-door sales. Part of my career involved long sales-cycle (months, start to finish), and most of my JW sales skills were useless. In fact, I had developed a hesitation to cold-calling and an assumed negative outcome expectation due to years of negative experiences selling WT publications. I wish I didn't learn bad sales habits from WTS.
Computer Skills? You are kidding now, aren't you? Since when does WTS provide or even encourage any computer skills? They actively discourage use of the internet for anything other than their own web site (http://quotes.watchtower.ca/internet.htm) True, they have their little WT Library CD-ROM, but I don't think you will have success if you put on your resume: "Computer Skills: Familiar with navigating the CD library of an obscure religious cult... also can cut and paste from the cult lib CD into Notepad"
Nothing that I learned from being a WTS was superior to what could have been learned through other, more efficient, more professional, more advanced, more effective channels; and without all the other WTS nonsense.

My wife is trying to figure out chronology from Daniel book RIGHT NOW!
by ithinkisee ini work from home mostly, and my wife is right now in the other room with a piece of paper with a line across it for a timeline with "0" in the middle.
she says she is determined to have a clear idea of the chronology this time around through the daniel book at the congregation book study.. this is great!
it dovetails in perfectly with the fact that she just brought me home some books i got from the library on ancient jerusalem history.
