Could you please provide a link to this cartoon controversy? I'm not familiar with it.
This is an interesting subject with me. Last summer I deliberately took a hiatus from JWD and decided to fill the void with learning about Scientology -- NOT that I wanted to be a member, mind you, but rather so I could compare levels of Cultishness to JWs.
Overall, I would say that -- bizarre beliefs aside, since beliefs have nothing to do with whether a group is a cult or not -- Scientologists are a more dangerous cult than JWs. IMO, I would give a Scientologist's experience an 8 or 9 (on a scale of 0 to 10); while I would give the average JW's experience a 6 or 7 on the Cult-O-Meter Scale (of course, individaul results might vary).
- Scientologists don't just shun, they actively try to sabotage the life of ex-members.
- They don't just reject a certain medical procedure, the reject ALL disease as being a product of the mind ("engrams"). (True story: I was walking with a friend, who would die three weeks later due to cancer, downtown in front of the Scientolgy Canada headquarters. My Friend was YELLOW because his liver was failing. This was his last day outside before going to the hosptital to die. My friend sees a client of his, a known Scientologist, soliciting outside the Headquarters. This client suggests my frind should come inside to their headquarters, as they have some REAL HELP that could save him. As if a B.S. auditing session could help with cancer and liver failure. Sheesh)
- They don't just beg for donations and recommend to old folks how/why they can donate their estate; they actively CHARGE PLENTY OF MONEY for a never ending series of "Audits".
In the end: Same S**T, different color, and a bit more stinky! (How is THAT for an elegant summary?)
