  Recovering, take a look at Chinatown, little Italy etc....

  Try the diamond district in Manhattan, these are basically racially segregated business where the majority, asian, Italian, or Jewish community lives, assist one another and set up business that they benefit from as well as outsiders.

  Harlem was once a hub for black wealth business and culture... not so much now.

  It would be much more difficult for whites to bomb(yes the white folks actually flee a plane and fire bombed this community), or just outright take the property of mi oddities as they did in the past. The sad part is however that African Americans are to closely linked to a political party that hamstrings them into thinking they somehow have to rely on assistance so much of the pull yourself up by the bootstraps they once followed has dissipated.

  There is also the elitist attitude that permeates the Amerixan culture that looks down on trades so most blacks get degrees in lower paying disciplines instead of first focusing on trades that would allow them to establish businesses and wealth. The Hispanic community is excelling in this area and their children are seeing the fruits of it now.

  Recovering I think you would be pleasantly surprised to find out that there were a number of black communities following reconstruction throughout the South as well as the North that held lots of wealth, land, and successful businesses. What usually did them in were poor / middle class whites that took advantage of the racial power they had to destroy these communities.

  You really need to understand that Marcus Garvey was not actually on the level of a klansman. Wikipedia is one of the worst places to go in order to get a nuanced understanding of history. Garvey preached self reliance of blacks. He sought to take the teachings of Booker T. Washington to another level. He spoke of blacks not relying on the system or blaming others for their deplorable state and that the time had come to move along and build their own schools, businesses and wealth and stop waiting for handouts.

  If you actually researched the meeting he had with that klansman you will see that he speaks about the fact that the Klan said what they meant so there was no hypocrisy where as most whites act as if they care all the while they tried to take advantage.

  During the segregation era there were more black owned businesses, more black wealth, black schools focused on black issues.

  The black experience is not the same as it is in England, so maybe there is a disconnect.

  Look up black wall street, look at the ideology of Marcus Garvey and Booker T Washington. They understood that African Americans in the USA needed some autonomy, they neededto be able to create their own institutions etc...

  Maybe a better term would be seperation.

  One thing that many people overlook in the USA is that segregation was not necessarily a bad thing for the African American community. It is political death to even hint at the idea but it is true and the numbers are actually there to prove it.

  The great migration resulted in the decline of family, religious and cultural ties that were actually beneficial for the community.

  It was the fact that separate but equal was not in fact equal. Post integration, African Americans have fared far worse financially.Fewer business owned, fewer property owners, and people separated from familial ties. I think that integration would have happened slowly regardless, but the huge influx of black people fleeing North in hopes of a better future did not pan out as expected.

  My old school in NJ didn't have enough books for each student. We shared books. My parents and everyone else assumed that it was because there was no money for books. Our highschool did not have language courses either. We had metal detectors, we had 4 armed security guards though. We were suppose to spend our senior year at NJIT (New Jersey Institute of Technology) which was an excellent college. None of this happened.

  Why were we not able to take advantage of this, corruption. Not exclusively white corruption, but we had a black mayor who was one fo the most corrupt politicians of all time known as Sharpe James.

  They people had faith in him because he was a black man with power. The dude only cared about his own pocket. He put family and friends who were unqualified in positions in the government and they siphoned the money off. Don't believe me, look it up.

  Mark Zuckerberg donated 100,000,000 in to 2010, 15 years after I graduated highschool. Many rich white folks in outlying communities matched his donation so that it was a 200 million dollar grant given to the city. COREY BOOKER the light-skinned savior of the Democratic party along with Christie. The money was squandered.

  Hald went to teachers, then a huge chunk went to bureaucratic salaries... the kids saw slightly higher graduation rates but that was mainly in charter schools.

  Look at the grad rates of schools like Newark Central Highschool, Shabazz, Newark Vocational and Technical and you will see nothing profound has taken place.

  This is a class issue first, a race issue second.

  the bank that supplies my credit card in conjunction with the nra dropped the nra association.

  lol i charged a life time membership with the nra and cut the card up and told them to pound sand.

  don't bother with the "they will hit your credit" i have never in my 56 years of life used a bank for a home loan.
