i recently watched a movie called instinct.
it starred anthony hopkins and told the story about a man who went to the wild to live with the gorillas.
while the premise may have seemed farfetched, the movie offered an insight i had not thought of till i saw how the story was told.
It is the instinct the fight to protect your own that makes you who you are.

This defines my husband's feelings towards my family. They have effectively abandoned me as their child b/c I no longer subscribe to their religious beliefs. This has caused me much emotional pain and suffering. My husband sees the affect this has on me and hates them for it. He's a protector by nature; God have mercy on anyone who messes with me!

i was just wondering what do the members of this board think the biggest deception in the teaching of the watchtower society is?.
one of the biggest deceptions for me, one that stuck like a thorn in my side was their deception on earthquakes, hence my previous thread on the last days.
the wts, as i recall, published supposed proof of the increase in earthquakes since 1914. i was so angry when i found out that this was an outright lie.
607 was a biggie for me. The "new light" in 1995 about the definition of "generation" was the first time I actually thought, "this is bullshit."
The "elder arrangement" soured me big time -- Elders being able to determine your repentance. What bunk, sayeth I!

NikL, an excellent point re: God's angel appearing to the Magi in a dream, directing them to not to return to Herod. According to scripture, this is what happened.
YK suggests that God would not have instructed the Magi b/c of their belief in astrology. This does not explain why he appeared to them (these unholy, pagan Chaldeans) in a dream. These men may have been "pagan," yet they found enough favor in God's eyes that one of his angels appeared to them in a dream, something that was generally reserved for the faithful (e.g., Joseph). This, of course, was to preserve the life of His Messiah. It's interesting to note that just because these men were not believers does not mean that they were evil.
Kind of an interesting metaphor for today, huh?

I am just tired of the "reasoning" issue; I don't want the JW "reasoning" I want scriptural proof. I've had JW reasoning for 20 years; now I want to know what the BIBLE says.

i have a vivid memory of 1975 even though i was only 6 years old.
i remember the whispers and the fervor surrounding the year.
i even had an uncle who marked his calendar every day with big red xs proclaiming that he couldn't wait for "this evil system of things to end.".
Spent the first 9 months of 1975 in the womb; when I was young, I remember my parents always talking about the "significance of 1975..." and for the longest time, I thought it was b/c I was born that year!

If you check both scriptures, even in the NWT, there is NOTHING that indicates that Satan was the cause of this star. Does anyone know where the JWs got this idea?

you're even free to be critical of the government and it's leaders.
the many men and women who have died defending this country did so to preserve the rights even of people who hate the u.s. there are many different cultures here, so there are many different attempts at creating laws for the land.
Larc, I agree -- I didn't vote for Clinton... but, at that time, I was (a.) not old enough to vote; and (b.) still a card-carryin' JW, so I couldn't vote "in good conscience." I watched the Clinton/Dole debates on TV though... gee, was that an interestin.....zzzzZZZzzzz...

I have debated the merits of the electoral college vs. election by popular vote. I wonder if the outcome of our recent election will spark legislation to repeal the electoral college. The beauty of this is that, as Americans, we have the ability -- no, the right -- to make changes to these laws. I love that about this country.
I've not done much research on the argument of democracy vs. republic, so I'm not qualified to comment on this issue.
I am not a huge fan of Dubya... I think his environmental policies (there's an oxymoron for ya) suck and I'm less than enthused about his grasping at the Religious Right (ignoring the marjority of conservatives) b/c he's vote-hungry. But he's a politician; I expect that.
