That's very interesting. Didn't the Society quote Sagan frequently in the literature?

As BluesBrothers mentioned, I remember back in the '80s almost hating the Japanese brothers. They were getting more press than that fictional pioneer sister with an unbelieving mate, 5 children under the age of 10, a full-time job, and a wooden leg.

2013 District Convention Program: Gods Word is Truth!
by bats in the belfry in.
unlike god's word, that jws believe to be absolute truth, any one of their directives given at the 2013 district convention could be subject to misinterpretation.. .

Question about future enthusiasm of the congregations.
by Fading Begins ini was the store manager of a large furniture store - part of a national chain.
we had large sales once month, and giganic four day sale every quarter with a large amount of print and tv advertising.
for these quarterly sales we would have conference calls every morning with our directors to report our numbers, contests for the salespeople, and target goals for each salesperson, individual store, and the national district.

That's an interesting analogy!
You can see the GB consolidating their power and withdrawing into their ivory towers, throwing the elders to the wolves, and squeezing the R&F for every penny they have. It's pathetic. They don't have an impetus like 1975 at their disposal. That was the ultimate fire sale. I don't know how they're going to keep enthusiasm up or hold onto the minds of the R&F now that they have the Internet to contend with.

Watchtower Birthday Logic
by enigma1863 inthe watchtower bases their opposition to birthdays by two scriptures, saying something bad happened and god must have put it in there for a reason.
following their logic are there any other things jws shouldnt do because bad things happened in a couple of scriptures?.

For those still "in"... is it just me?
by leaving_quietly ini'm still "in" and i've noticed an odd trend recently.
conversations with jws seem to be more jw-ish than ever!
in normal conversation, i'll hear: "these watchtowers are just wonderful!

If there really is more JW talk going on it's probably because they need constant reassurance that they have the "truth." The more you say it, the more true it is.

Quote Re: Elders Whose Kids Go To College Might Lose Privileges
by Justitia Themis ini seem to remember some new 'rule' that elders whose children go to college, or perhaps it was out-of-state college, should be carefully examined to see if they still qualify.. does anyone know where that is in the publications?.

Stupid cult. It's kind of shocking to see it in black and white like that. And they deny that they discourage higher ed.

What were your favorite assembly foods?
by NoRegrets inso i'm young enough to not remember having hot prepared meals at assemblies, but heard all about it from my parents and the like.
but what i do remember were all of the cold sandwiches and institutional snacks and soda.

Wow, most of you got fed better than I ever did at any assembly I attended. At my first circuit assembly we got powdered eggs that turned green as they sat on the serving line.
We ate a lot of "Salisbury Steak" (hamburger with a lot of bread crumbs in it) with gravy.
I got drafted into Food Service, usually vegetable prep and serving line. One circuit assembly I spent the entire time working in the kitchen, cooking and serving. I think I heard 15 minutes of the public talk.
Anyone remember the boxed lunches they used to sell at the end of the assembly? Usually meatloaf sandwich or some such thing.
They'd also sell off all of the extra food. My family came home with a 10-pound provolone cheese one time.
My favorite assembly food was the roast beef sandwich on a sesame seed bun. It came with a packet of sweet barbecue sauce.
Oh! And at an international assembly in Montreal they served soft-serve ice cream with strawberries. Heaven!
