  Devouring the Forbidden Fruit - Higher Education

  well, i told my wife over the weekend i was going to go back school to finish my degree.

  she is 100% supportive of it!

  apparently she doesn't think higher education is so evil either.. since my former major was computer programming and that was in the late 1990's, i was told i'd have to retake a bunch of classes since times have changed.

  The guy in the video who turns down the promotion does it because he knows his wife will nag him that he misses meetings. That is the situation for many of us stuck in by marriage. When I skip, I'm happy, have no anxiety, but when the wife gets home I get guilt tripped and nagged about not going.

  But when I go, my wife is happy but I am miserable. No peace either way! It really sucks to be in this situation

  
  

  Thats dead on Absolom. I resonate with your comment. So much of what people do is because of peer pressure. Maybe the girl rejected the college brochures because of pressure from her parents or siblings. I feel the same way about missing meetings. Either I am stressed because of sitting there listening to vile hateful propaganda, or Im stressed because my wife is pissed off and home life sucks. What a sh#tty situation to be in. Sometimes I just want to join the coast guard or something and run from my life.

  How many JWs really believe the end will come "soon"?

  this topic has been on my mind lately.

  i have been looking around at jws and wondering how many truly believe the end is as near as they are told.

  from my personal experience, i know that my parents fully believe the end is imminent and may come any time now.

  I would just read her some quotes from old WT that sound urgent, or that discourage college because the end was so close etc just like todays text, with dates like the 30s-80s. Ask her to guess when these urgent warnings were written. She will likely think they were written within the last few years. When she sees they were from the 60s she will get the point, at least subconciously that these are tired old warnings and there is no need to freak out over them! The reaction todays text had on your wife was the intended one. Create Fear Obligation and Guilt, spurring on further activity, contributions, obedient thoughts etc.

  Please remember that IN GENERAL women FEEL and use emotion in a way we generally do not. While you are using your power of reason and logic, she will not, or may not be capable of doing so. Try to tailor your response with this in mind. Facts will not get through, so use things that will make her feel. Thats what the WT and jw.org is all about right now. Just think of all the sappy music in the jwbroadacst videos! Its all designed to bypass concious thought and go right to the emotions.

  Also why is she so freaked out by the end coming? Is she afraid for your "spirituality"? Do you think she has a clue about how you feel?

  What would happen if life was found elsewhere?

  see jws have said time and again jesus died once for all time... a quote from hebrews.

  okay rule out humn-like aliens what about animals plants and microbes... i once had a hot fight with an elder when i still believed that here was no reason to doubt alien animals etc.

  yet not based on any wt article witnesses reject this often.. lets suppose say in a month microbes are found on ceres (i doubt it will happen but let's roll with it) they are living as much as our cells are and reporduce... okay what would mother say in the magazines when millions of jehovah's witnesses demand to know why jehovah created microbes on a dwarf planet?.

  What amazes me is how believers dismiss outright even the slightest possibility of even simple life ANYWHERE in the universe, yet accept fully the existence of angels, demons, hybrid giant nephilim offspring etc

  How do you respond to JW family?

  for those who have left and are still in contact with jw family, how do you usually respond when they bring up jw stuff, i.e.

  start talking about the nearness of armageddon or things like that.. i usually say nothing and just let it pass but i'm considering changing tact to something more confrontational, less because i want to change their mind and more because i find it tiresome.

  I am still in, but when cultish JW subjects come up, I either try to make a thoughtful TTATT influenced comment, change the subject, or remain silent or say hmmm....

  my 10 year old son is paying attention at the meetings

  the public talk on sunday was about evolution.. my son pointed out flaws in the speakers arguments during and after the meeting... mostly about how animals aren't able to communicate etc.

  he even brought up coco the ape that is able to communicate via sign.. i told him that i heard a ton of inconsistencies but i am afraid to say anything because your mom will get angry :).

  im glad he is paying attention.. and the school system must be doing something right..

  Public talks are becoming the hardest part of the meetings to stomach. To add to the sickening propaganda found in every meeting, some speakers are just so dumb and ignorant, its like hearing nails on a chalkboard. Good to see your son is using critical thinking skills. That is the most vital skill to help a child to have. Good job!
