Most interesting. Thanks ‘titch’. I was not there but am currently researching the history of the Californian JWs, aka IBSA, at this point in time. Maybe one day we can ‘touch base’ on this time period.

So, 60 Years Ago
by titch inso, folks, 60 years ago, starting on september 1st, i believe, we, local witnesses in southern california, had the "privilege" of attending the "around the world assembly", at, of all places, the rose bowl, in pasadena.
(i think that it was an 8-day assembly) i was 9 years old then, almost ready to start 4th grade.
so, was anyone else, on this site, at that assembly?

An analysis of the recent 153rd Gilead Graduation talk by Jesse Morris (member of the US Branch Committee and son of Anthony Morris III)
by jwleaks inarticle from the last days newsletter (june 5-11, 2023).
it has been said that by reading the watchtower and awake!
magazines, along with other publications of jehovah’s witnesses, a person will receive, over a period of years, a considerable and broad education.. …would you like to grow in knowledge, obtaining an education of even much greater value than can be received in any college?

I remember 2 WatchTower's and an Awake! per month, with many, many pages to have to constantly read/study/underline. It was never-ending.
Four magazines a month, 32 pages each edition, 128 pages per month, or 1536 pages per year of life saving so-called 'spiritual food at the proper time'.
What are we down to now? 32 pages for the year, including 4 pages of covers and lots of pictures.
I guess we're on a spiritual diet nowadays, except for the governing body... they look well-fed.

…Would you like to grow in knowledge, obtaining an education of even much greater value than can be received in any college? You can do so by reading regularly this magazine and its companion, Awake! - The Watchtower magazine, June 15, 1983, p. 31.
Back in 1983 there were 24 public issues per year of The Watchtower magazine (32 pages each issue) and 24 public issues per year of the Awake! magazine (32 pages each issues).
Starting next year there will be one public issue of each magazine published.

Does reading the Watchtower and Awake! magazines really give you a ‘considerable and broad education’ along with ‘an education of even much greater value than can be received in any college?’
At the recent 153rd Gilead Graduation, Jesse Morris, member of the United States Jehovah's Witnesses Branch Committee, and son of former governing body member Anthony Morris III, gave a talk in which he incongruently conflated 'critical thinking' in education with a cynical, critical, pessimistic attitude, i.e. ‘negative thinking’.
Upon reading The Watchtower Jesse Morris is quoting from, one discovers that the subject under discussion in the quoted paragraph, is not ‘critical thinking’, but rather ‘negative thinking’.
Watch the entire talk via by Jesse Morris on JW(.)ORG [starts at 0:11:20 mark]: JW Broadcasting - June 2023: 153rd Gilead Graduation.
Is critical thinking negative thinking?
What is critical thinking?
The Foundation For Critical Thinking provides the following definition of ‘critical thinking’:
A well cultivated critical thinker:
· raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;· gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;
· thinks openmindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing, as need be, their assumptions, implications, and practical consequences; and
· communicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.
Critical thinking is, in short, self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking. It presupposes assent to rigorous standards of excellence and mindful command of their use. It entails effective communication and problem solving abilities and a commitment to overcome our native egocentrism and sociocentrism.

From an article appearing in this week's edition of The Last Days newsletter:
licking at an ice cream cone during our spiritual feasts - The Watchtower magazine, June 1, 1953
Have you ever heard of ‘a self-licking ice cream cone’?
A self-licking ice cream cone is a self-perpetuating system that has no purpose other than to sustain itself.
In a paper published by the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), a self-licking ice cream cone is described as “something that exists only for its own enjoyment and no one else’s.”
The website A Way with Words describes a self-licking ice cream cone as “a process, department, institution, or other thing that offers few benefits and exists primarily to justify or perpetuate its own existence.”
The Urban Dictionary further adds that a self-licking ice cream cone is “an organization or entity whose sole purpose is promoting its own existence and splendor.”
Sort of reminds one of the Watch Tower Society, who thoughtfully reminded us of their primary purpose of existence, when they embedded themselves into Lesson 19: Be Generous.

Subscriptions are welcome and encouraged.
In support of The Last Days newsletter, JW LEAKS will be hosting and providing all their document links.
JW LEAKS feels that this is important in shining a light on, and holding to account, the Watch Tower Society and those leaders within the Jehovah's Witnesses organization that disregard or violate the laws of the land, or that cause religious harm to sections of the community . . . especially to the children.

Do you have to be baptized to be a Jehovah’s Witness?
The newly published, official Jehovah’s Witnesses Terminology Guide for journalists, under the sub-heading Jehovah’s Witnesses, states:
A person is not considered to be one of Jehovah’s Witnesses until he obtains a reasonable understanding of basic Bible teachings, qualifies to participate in the public ministry in association with a congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and is baptized in symbol of his personal dedication to God. (bold italics added)
Is the claim that a person is not considered to be one of Jehovah’s Witnesses until he is baptized truthful and honest? No. Consider the following:
In the latest Jehovah’s Witnesses cartoon indoctrination video for little children, young Caleb learns from his father that he does not have to be baptized to be a Jehovah's Witness.
The video also refers to a potential meeting with the elders to discuss Caleb becoming an 'unbaptized publisher’
