I think sexual abuse happens everywhere. It's just more shocking when somebody the public trusts gets caught doing it.

Hopelessly, that is very interesting. Has she ever thought of converting to Judaism?

Can I Please Just Say...
by AGuest inthat it's "jewel-ry"... and not "joo-lery" (may you all have peace!)?
i know, i know... very small potatoes in the grand scheme of things.
but, dang, if you're gonna host a television jewelry show, shouldn't you at least be able to say "jewelry"?

I've never been one to get my panty hose in a twist if somebody calls it joo-lery but I have been known to raise an eyebrow. Another eyebrow raiser is Ma-suh- too- suhts instead of M a-suh-CHOO-suhts but maybe that is just a southern thang.

When I was young I was convinced my pregnant mother was carrying my former daughter and just knew she was going to have a girl. She did. Because I'm the oldest and because my mother suffered from post partum depression, it fell to me to help look after my sister. I knew instinctively exactly how she liked to be fed, held and shushed. I also developed a very strong connection with her that allowed me to know when she was in trouble. There are four siblings in my family and she and I are the closest. And why shouldn't we be if we were together in a past life?
I find it weird that being raised a JW and not believing in life after death, I still had this feeling/knowing about my sister. I hadn't even heard of reincarnation at the time. So yeah, I think reincarnation is a possibility.
Also, when I converted to Judaism, my rabbi told me that it is a common belief with modern Jews that many of us are being reincarnated through Gentile women because the holocaust killed so many Jewish women.
Of course, what I like about Judaism is that there is no set belief of what happens after death. We are free to believe whatever we want about the next world. Judaism is a religion of life. We figure if we take care of this world, the world that may come will take care of itself. I wish more Christians knew how liberating Reform Judaism can be.

Farkel, I've often wondered about your belief system. Thank you for sharing your story.
When I left the JW's my mantra was also "Fuck God." I used to look straight up at the sky and stick up my middle finger and tell him if he existed, I hated his g.d. guts. I was atheist all the way. But then one day I wasn't for reasons I'd rather not go into on this forum.
I, too, have studied the Eastern philosophies and religions and found them to be fascinating. I finally cchose Judaism because it is a religion of life. The only thing I have to do as a reform Jew is live my life, try to be good, and try to help others. Judaism mixes nicely with my pantheistic tendencies.

Why I am afraid to admit to being and atheist in real life in the US.
by JonathanH ini live in the bible belt in the us, atheism is a major taboo.
on the internet i occasionally feel like atheism is normal and just another accepted demographic, but that's largely because i hang around places with lots of atheists.
then i see the other side.. this is an op ed article that atheist jerry coyne wrote today, it's on how you don't need god to be good.

LOL @ EP. You are my new board hero!
I currently live in Joplin, MO. Although bothersome, the Christians are still rather sweet to me. However, I converted in Kansas City. It is there that I lost friends and neighbors over my conversion.
