Correction to my post above: I said Johnny Green wrote "Love Me or Leave Me". I meant he wrote "Body and Soul". Sorry for the error.

My Epiphany
by Farkel inwell, folks.
i just had a minor epiphany.
its a wonder it never dawned on me before, because it should have been so obvious.. we can forget about doing any more research or any more exegesis.

Conventions
by podsy1 inthe reason that i asked this question is that i wanted my younger son to understand why my wife and i were so attached to such an organization as the wbts.
by what we have told him of the beliefs held by the witnesses he thinks they are crazy.
i am going to have him listen to a tape that goes into to the "hope" that many of us had concerning 1975. i wanted him to see a large assembly and the influence that it can have in convincing one that the wbts has the "truth.

We believed some very incredible things as JWs. The average person cannot understand it. Your son will likely never understand it.
I think one of the hardest things about coming out of a religion like that is that when we get our senses, we can't understand it ourselves. We actually BELIEVED we were never going to die . . . just live right through a whole-scale mass world slaughter and walk in a big parade of smiling faces into Paradise. People who think normally just don't understand how we thought. -

Hi, COMF:
Me? "Butt heads" --was the pun intended? LOL -- with Norm and JH? Nahhh! They're too smart!
(Here I thought I was known more for getting into it with trinitarian revivalists.) -

Hi, Farkel:
Thanks, this was a classic. Excellent recap of the organizational flaws.
Remembering when they changed from the green book to the pink book, like overnight the singing went from ho-humish (pun intended) to horrible. I used to play piano when they had the green book, and the singing wasn't too bad in those days, but nothing like the singing in a lively evangelical church. (That's one thing I will give fundamentalists credit for--their inspirational singing.) But after the pink book came, I quit playing because I could not follow their tunes--neither to play nor sing. The tunes just do not follow general music theory. I must not be the only one who had that problem. I thought that was why they resorted to releasing tapes to accompany singing. People just can't sing bad music. Now pushing back a little before the pink book came out, remember the music they had at district assemblies in the early 60s? They started having a choir at district assemblies, and some of the songs were quite lovely. I heard a rumor that Johnny Green (MGM music director, wrote "Love Me or Leave Me") was a JW, and I wondered if he might have had anything to do with some of that music for a brief time before the pink book. One song I especially remember, not because it was beautiful, but because of the weird lyrics (in march tempo):
"Hap-py are the ones who stay a-waaaake
And keep their out-er gar-r-r-ments!
That they may not walk un-cloooothed
And peo-ple see their parts of sha-a-a-ame!
Oh we are ha-ppy serv-ing Jahhhhhh" ...
[Da-dah da-dah da-dah dah dahhhhhh]
He comes to see the work we do,
May we al-ways stay a-waaake!Remember that one.

Sorry I missed Mulan's pics. As I mentioned to her, the more I reflect on that little get-together, the more I think how enjoyable it was. I really enjoyed meeting you all, and wish there had been more time to get acquainted. I want to do your dad's story for Beacon. Post me if you like at: [email protected]Blessings,

H'lo, Ven:
I don't recognize photos very well, so excuse my asking:
Are you (and your Dad) among those I met--along with Mulan--at a recent gathering at a certain small-town resort?Ros

Don't listen to Norm; he just doesn't like BRCI because he doesn't like me (mainly cuz I'm a "Xtian"!). He's never been to a BRCI, and he knows about as much about it as he does evolution and science. Atheists/agnostics would do better to listen to AlanF, who has a better perspective about it.
To ZazuWitts:
BRCI has had several gatherings in Orlando--at which one did we meet?

Hi, Marilyn:
That clip is from a snapshot taken not quite 2 years ago, appropriately at the BRCI conference in Waterloo. (This year will be the second time in Canada.) Tom Cabeen, Roger Karlsson and I drove down to Niagra Falls the afternoon before the conference where this pic was shot; thus, the windblown look.Post me at Beacon sometime: [email protected]

Hello, Tina, Larc and all:
I host the BEACON website, and I also serve as a board member of BRCI. As such, perhaps I can clear up what seem to be some misperceptions.
1. BRCI is not affiliated with my BEACON website, http://www.xjw.com , except for a link to it from BEACON. Because I am on the board is evidently why some people make the association. BRCI has its own website: http://www.brci.org
2. Ray Franz in not affiliated with BRCI, however Peter Gregerson is a board member, as is Jon Mitchell and Tom Cabeen who are close to Ray. Ray attends a few of the sessions only if they happen to be held in the Atlanta area because of the opportunity to see quite a few friends who make the journey. In the early years of BRCI, Ray gave a couple or so talks, but not in recent years. When a conference was held in the Atlanta area, he and Cynthia have on occasion hosted an open-house smorgus after the conference closed on Sunday noon. Jim Penton sometimes attends BRCI, and when he does he usually gives a talk. He will be there this year. (I won't be.)
3. Board members are of the Christian faith, some are non-trinitarian, some are trinitarian, and some are non-commital about it. The program does have a Christian theme, but the conferences are open to everyone without pressure to conform (that is, from BRCI--can't speak for some of the attendees). I don't happen to enjoy religious talks, especially those with an evangelical flavor, so I and others of like interest use that time to enjoy informal fellowship.
I have no idea who Tina spoke with, but generally an experience like she had is from an attendee with their own agenda. The conferences always have numerous people of very diverse religious views who attend, mainly to meet other exWitnesses.
I have heard it mentioned several times lately that it seems the BRCI site is not working. Could someone explain? I looked at it a few minutes ago, and the information about the Waterloo conference is there: June 27-July 1. Click on "Conferences" and scroll to the bottom.
Hope this helps.

The Horse's Ass Award for May 2001
by seven006 inin every news group, discussion board and chat room there seems to be a few individuals that never seem to completely grasp the art of thinking.
their need to disrupt and irritate reach superstar status in the realm of stupidity.
the desire for attention and recognition though sophomoric post's and chat room spamming becomes as much a part of the entire internet experience as the valuable and useful contributions of others.

Brilliant, Seven006!
I have only one objection: Horses don't deserve this award!
