I always thought that no one could be more wrong about more things than the JW's. I was wrong.

I don't understand the logic of religion
by Leander inif you ask a jw why does god allow suffering, more than likely you'll get the response that god has allowed satan and mankind to follow their own course to prove that only god has the right to govern over man.
for a long time i accepted that answer as being correct and i never even took the time to really think about what that meant.
now however when i reason on that logic i realize that it does'nt make sense.

What you are saying makes sense. Most of the Bible is illogical. But, when in doubt, it is nice to know that murdering an innocent person will always set things right.

Did "Bad Storms" == Armegeddon?
by LDH inwe had quite a bit of wind here last night, and as i was up with the baby and couldn't sleep anyway, i was thinking back to when i was young.. living on the east coast, we got some of the mega storms that the southwest doesn't usually get, at least not with any regularity.. as a kid, everytime a vicious thunderstorm or violent electric storm started, i would wonder the unimaginable:.
is this armegeddon????.

Once, when I was about 7 or 8, we came home from a district assembly. That night, the power went off, and I looked out the window, but because of a full moon, the yard was lit up almost like day.
Now, for a seven year old, who has just been through a four day indoctrination session, the combination of a power outage and a rather unusual natural scene was just too much. I was sure it was
Armageddon. It was rather disappointing. Now, I fully expect the Society to declare that Armageddon is symbolic and has already happened.

If You Can't Accept Blood Then Surely......
by Englishman inif i believed that it was wrong to have a blood transfusion, then i would also believe that it was wrong to ingest any human blood fractions at all.
picking and choosing what bit of blood is ok and what isnt, is not going along with the principle of the whole thing at all.
it's just dodging the issue imo.. if i believed it was wrong to have a blood transfusion, common sense would tell me it was also wrong to have an organ transplant.

It looks like my original response has been somewhat misunderstood.
First of all, I personally consider the blood issue to be flawed theologically, ethically, logically, and legally - as a minimum.
I was presenting only one argument here - that the law and the Bible recognize exceptions to even the most serious of sins, like murder. So, for those who accept (even wrongly) that the Bible prohibits blood, there is still no reason to avoid it at the expense of your life.

Gorbachev Foreshadows Watchtower

recently.
he called it "pure propaganda".

"Maybe you'll hear similar honest words from a Governing Body member someday." - We already have, thanks to Ray Franz. Unfortunately, JW's are not allowed to listen.
That reminds me of an old Wizard of Id comic. One of the knights asks another one, "How's it going?" The first knight replies "Oh, I can't complain." Then in the next frame, he says, "It's forbidden."
Come to think of it, that would make a great JW cartoon.

I think Brown is bringing up the idea of money so that he can begin positioning the Society as a cash-poor, non profit organization, and Erica as a manipulative gold digger, who is just trying to get rich off of the poor little organization.
The propaganda machine is just getting fired up.

Copping Out?
by IslandWoman inare we copping out if we blame the watchtower for almost everything that went wrong in our watchtower life?.
most of us knew the rules.
most of us had the opportunity to read and study their publications and the bible.

The phrase "we knew the rules" has shown up several times in this thread. I would like to point out that we most certainly did not know the rules.
Did any prospective convert ever think for one minute that all friendships and even family relationships were contingent upon remaining in the organization? That's a pretty big rule to leave out.
Did any prospective convert ever think that family comes second inside the organization?
Was any prospective convert ever informed that there is no honorable way out?
In addition, we can plead youth, indoctrination, and dirty tricks.
Not only did we not know all of the rules, but the organization purposefully and willfully lied to us to cover them up. Ask a JW who is out in service if they believe that only JW's will survive Armageddon. They will answer "no" - an outright lie. A lie designed to trick people into joining, then they can be fully informed only when it is too late.

My Last Assembly
by gilwarrior inthe last assembly i ever attended was in january of 2001 in rosenburg, texas.
i was bored out of my mind.
i saw many of the women there dressed in miniskirts and blouses with plunging necklines and it made me sick!

Uhhhh, I understand the physical nausia caused by the program, but wouldn't the "miniskirts and blouses with plunging necklines" at least partially compensate for that? I just might check one out, again.

There are two sides to this issue:
From my own personal perspective, it is unhealthy to dwell on the JW experience. One of my favorite sayings is: "Are you going to spend your life being a result of the past, or a cause of the future?"
We are older and wiser now, than when we were in. We must move on and not let the unhealthy atmosphere of the organization continue to afflict us.
At the same time, I will never forgive them for the the misleading information, psychological manipulation, phobia indoctrination, and outright lies. Because of their dirty acts, many of us will continue to hound them with books, articles, web sites, letters, bad publicity, and any other tool that can expose them.
And, I'm not sure that this is unhealthy. It is much like an abused child who grows up to have a strong desire to assist other abused children and expose the perpetrators. Let's go get 'em!

I think a lot of JW's, deep down, agree with you on these points. I know my wife, who is a supporter of the blood ban, would not hesitate to store her own blood.
I would like to add another logical problem to the blood issue:
- The Bible clearly considers killing to be a sin. But, it makes allowances for self defense. If your life is in danger, you can kill in self defense in order to preserve it. The reasoning is that the law was made for humans, not humans for the law. What's the point of being law abiding, if you're dead?
Now, take the above sentence, and change the word "killing" to "taking a blood transfusion":
- The Bible clearly (debatably) considers taking a blood transfusion to be a sin. But, it makes allowances for self defense. If your life is in danger, you can take a blood transfusion in self defense (against disease or injury) in order to preserve it. The reasoning is that the law was made for humans, not humans for the law. What's the point of being law abiding, if you're dead?
Doesn't this make sense?
