when i started associating in the late 1960s the jws were very sociable and had frequent fun events.
here are some examples of the kinds of events we enjoyed, why they existed, and then the reason they were taken away:.
sports: being involved in school or professional sports was frowned upon, so the brothers in the hall would arrange for sports for every other weekend.
I would like to add two more to your list:
Youth Watchtower Study. My congregation, back in the early 80's, had a number
of young people who got together weekly to study their Watchtower, and have a
little gathering afterward. It was shut down by official word from the Society. It was
possible for it to become a forum for independent ideas.
Internet sites. When the internet first came out, Witnesses would get together to
fellowship on-line. We all know what happened to that.
how do you feel about travelling by air since the events of sept 11?.
have these occurences just made you uneasy, or were they enough to put a stop to flying altogether?.
i told some of my pub buddies that i would ask this question, the news media have indicated that most americans are refusing to travel anywhere by plane at present.. englishman.. nostalgia isn't what it used to be....
I'm actually from Canada, so I don't know if this helps - although
Canadians and Americans are pretty similar.
I run a company that owns, among other things, 12 travel agencies.
Since September 11, our travel business has been down by 40.6%
from the same period last year. Industry news from elsewhere on
the continent indicates the same thing.
So, although I would not hesitate to travel, many people are holding off.
You have always been, and still are, 1000 times safer in the air than
in your car. Think about it - 20 times more people were killed on the
ground on Sept 11 than in the air. Every year, 30000 Americans and
3000 Canadians are killed in car accidents. That means that almost
5000 people have been killed in cars since Sept 11, yet people still
do not hesitate to drive rather than fly.
there has to be a reason for the contempt that jw's have for the united nations.
it just doesn't make any sort of logical sense for a religious body such as the wtbts to have such a virulent hatred of an organisation who's main interest is in maintaining a peaceful world.. they say, i recall, that it is a "sham" or a pathetic substitute for god's kingdom.

Yes, I agree. They percieve the UN as a competitor, therefore,
they must talk it down.
As well, coming out against the UN is an audacious thing to say.
In their earlier days, they would do any stupid thing to get publicity -
picket churches, set a date for the end of the world, etc. So, this fit
right in with their "any publicity is good publicity" policy.

it was a history of blood transfusions, and where that area of medicine is heading in the future.

my currently devout jw sis told me how "proud" she was of the bro's at the wtc and how they fed , and comforted all those ppl...this told at the meetings i suppose.
