I must question the hotel association's math.
If each household spends $500.00 on hotels and meals for the 3 days/2 nights, that means that 19,000 out of town households must attend the convention to make these numbers add up. If each household has 2.5 persons in it, that means that the attendance must be 47,500. And don't forget that local residents don't stay at hotels, so this would be the out of town attendance only.
Now, I've been to tri-cities, and it looks like the population is somewhere around 100,000. Where are all of these Witnesses coming from? Does the entire state drive to Western Washington for the convention? If so, just think about the cost to the individual JW's, just so that the society can save $12-17.5 thousand.

Since Scientology has been mentioned several times, I would like to expound on my theory.
Consider: L Ron Hubbard was a science fiction writer. As I understand it, before founding the religion, he told his cohorts that anyone could start a religion.
I think that, either on his deathbed or through a posthumous book, he will reveal that this was all a huge joke - that he was just trying to make a point, and it got out of hand.
late in 1993 i made a prediction to an innactive, but still believing, jw.. the prediction was that the understanding of the "generation" would be changed before the end of 1994 and that it would become a figurative generation.. as it turned out, i was wrong, they changed it in november 1995.. but the witness still rang me up and asked how i could possibly know that 2 years before the org did.
the guys a rotten apostate now.. hehehe.. anyway, last night i did it again to another innactive believer, i predicted that the blood stance will be abandoned, and that child molestation is going to hit the headlines.
the second ones pretty straight forward, a nice little teaser for him to gain confidence in my "prophetic" ability.
The blood issue will take time to change.
The first step will be to change it into a personal decision that isn't really a personal decision, like voting. It will still be wrong, but people will be conditioned to think that it was their own idea.
They will then need to wait for a generation to die. Then, when they finally scrap it altogether, they can say "this isn't a change, it's always been this way."
The vaccination doctrine was changed in 1952. There are still some old, die hard JW's who won't take a vaccination. But, today, most JW's don't even know it was banned.
This is how the blood doctrine will die.

he began by admitting that he was not familiar with the rating code but that it was wrong for a christian to see an r rated movie.
he stayed at least five minutes on the subject.. afterwards there was the usual, abbreviated wt study and i found paragraph four particularly interesting:.
"Come to think of it, how are you able to keep going?"
Well, I keep going because they keep giving me talks. Tonight, I have the #4 talk on the subject "What does the new testament say about everlasting life".

The blood prediction is definitely correct, however, the time frame and methodology may be off. In order to minimize legal liability, the Society will back off from the blood doctrine in stages. It will begin soon, but it will be 25 years before JW's are really free to take transfusions.
Here's another one: The total number of anointed being sealed in 1935. This whole anointed fiasco is nothing but an embarassment to them. I really can't believe they haven't fixed it yet.

while attending the district convention at the cow palace in san francisco, the jw man who had brought me into the religion, told me that ray franz had resigned from the governing body, and several were disfellowshipped from bethel in a major cleaning out of apostates.
i was shocked, and asked why ray franz would resign.
Your experience reminds me very much of my own.
I consider myself a sane person, and one who is somewhat familiar with psychology. Yet those first experiences with forbidden information brought forth phobias that I would never have believed I could harbor - the chills, jitters, and excitement when I first reached for this, and other, books.
It strikes me as funny, now, when I remember hiding the book and reading it in small pieces whenever I could get a moment alone.

There are some extremely ridiculous fringe groups, but the dumbest mainstream religion, in my opinion, is Christian Science.
Imagine taking one of the JW's stupidest ideas (the blood ban), and multiplying it over every field of science and medicine. The cognitive dissonance within that group must be staggering.

Statistically speaking, about 14 congregations out of 15 will have no partakers. Personally, I have not seen anyone partake for 20 years.
The wine and unleavened bread are taken home by whoever brought them. I can recall my mother baking the bread some years (from a recipe in the WT). I got to try some at home. It wasn't bad.
I have always found, though, that the aroma of the wine is tantalizing. Dry red wine that is passed around a room in an open glass can be very aromatic, especially when it is in a sterile room like a kingdom hall. I always feel like a good snort of wine after a memorial.
for me, the word was "loving".. great "loving" kindness.. great undeserved "loving" kindness!.
disfellowshipping is a "loving" provision.. when the wtbts want their accolytes to swallow another bitter pill, another restriction, another rebuke, another demand on time, the buzz word is "loving".. the "loving" word, is, to the average jw, the same as the mccabe nod is to the salesman.
the mccabe nod is used by salesman all the time to get the prospective customer to agree to something that he doesn't care for too much.
The phrase that ticks me off is: "Suchlike ones"
Aside from turn of the century religious literature, where in the world could you possibly find anyone who uses that phrase? If you hear it, you know you're near a dub.
