"Gary Ridgway, what do you have to say in your defence?"
"I followed the Golden Rule, your honour."
on another thread a poster made the comment that the golden rule was garbage.
she said it was arrogant and made assumptions.. i didn't want to derail that thread so i started another wondering if this is a common thought about this belief on this forum.
i guess i naively thought the value of doing to others as you want them to do to you was generally accepted as positive.. i understand people have different opinions of jesus as a person but i don't want to get into that here.
"Gary Ridgway, what do you have to say in your defence?"
"I followed the Golden Rule, your honour."
there's a current court case in ny which is hearing that question right now.
the precise issue is the continued captivity of two chimpanzees, (leo and hercules, names bestowed by humans) in a medical research laboratory at stony brook university.. i suggest that the application has some merit.
are not all of us "animals?
it's come to my attention - via someone who attended mark sanderson's televised talk to the u.k - that an elder's wife was upset at a blatant lie by a bethelite speaker, prior to mr. sanderson making an appearance.. it seems that the "supporting act" from mill hill - mr. paul gillies - informed the nationwide audience that the britain branch was waiting for planning permission for the new branch, and would provide updates when news came in.. it turns out that mr. gillies was lying, in order to let the governing body member get the prolonged applause later, for announcing that the permission had been given the day before!.
naughty mr.
gillies!!
'no one has greater love than this, that someone would lay down his life for his friends.'.
many have been hurt by the practice of shunning.
family members, [former?
Family life or death - Yes I would help.
Family major problems which are not life or death - Let them ask their other 'friends'.
Non-family - They can deal with it themselves.
If we were 2,000 years ago, these same people would have stoned us to death so we wouldn't even be here to help.

Why would I want to discuss my medical situation, or give my life and death decisions to a bunch of plumbers, mechanics and window washers???
My local Secretary elder is so incompetent he barely knows how to use a telephone (yes, really!) and as such tries to dodge every responsibility he has by passing the buck and pointing the finger at everyone else.
Putting any decision in the hands of people like that is the same as throwing your life away.
40-50 years after saying "armegeddon is right around the corner" we are now making progress!!!.
gotta have a sense of humor to deal with this stuff..
We've heard the same going back to 1883!
Here are three more extracts to compliment Blondies earlier:
w1883 October p.2 - Now we are just at the threshold of the age of glory.
w1908 January 1st p.6 - Thus we find ourselves at the threshold of what we believe to be the last seven years of this Gospel dispensation.
(7 years later):
w1915 January 15th
p.29 - And now we realize that we stand on the threshold of the Kingdom,
and that possibly our next report will not be to Brooklyn, but to Headquarters
beyond the veil.
i was having a discussion with my sister yesterday, and she said to me,'mom told me that if dad dies at armageddon, she cant get remarried in the new system' .
i told he i have never heard such a thing, but i do recall that it was believed that anyone who dies now, cannot be married in the 'new world' because they are to be as angels in heaven.. she said , so why be resurrected if yiu cant live your dream of having a loving mate and perfect children?
god is still dictating to you how you will live.
Good old WT flip flopping.
RESURRECTED ONES CAN MARRY?
Women may be turned into men - Golden Age 1930, April 2. P. 446 Bible Questions and Answers
Whether the identity of the sexes, as such, will be preserved, we do not know. There have been some well authenticated instances in which women have been transformed into men, and it is possible that this transformation may become general and we shall all be brothers together.
YES - 1943 "The Truth Shall Make You Free" p.362 - 364
[Evil ones] will not come forth [in the resurrection] to take part in the divine mandate [filing the earth], because that will have been completed by the Lord's "other sheep".
NO - w50 10/15 p. 381 "Be Fruitful, Multiply, Fill the Earth"
Nor will the resurrected multitudes be privileged to do so, for Jesus plainly stated that such will not marry nor be given in marriage
Even survivors won't marry - w54 9/15 p. 575 Questions From Readers
After that final test there will definitely be no marrying or being given in marriage then by those counted worthy of the new world and having the right to eternal life, just as angels have that right
YES - w54 9/15 p. 575 Questions From Readers
It is even reasonable and allowable to entertain the comforting thought that those of the other sheep who now die faithful will have an early resurrection and live during the time when the procreation mandate is being fulfilled and when paradise conditions are being spread earth-wide and that they will share in this divinely given service.
NO - w56 10/1 p. 601 par. 9 'He That Marries Not Does Better'
She died single, and that without the hope of enjoying married life in God's new world after she is resurrected from the dead.
NO - w61 11/15 p. 704 Questions From Readers
for dead ones with spiritual, heavenly hopes and for dead ones with earthly Paradisaic hopes the rule enunciated by Jesus Christ stands unaltered: "In the resurrection neither do men marry nor are women given in marriage"
NO - w67 10/15 p. 638 Questions From Readers
Jesus' words apply to the earthly resurrection, and they indicate that those resurrected will not marry or be reunited in a marriage relationship with former mates.
YES / MAYBE - w14 8/1 page 29+30, questions from readers
"Could Jesus be referring only to the heavenly resurrection?" "It is possible"
so, the anti-gmo movement scored another victory today.
chipotle has opted to only use non-gmo food items.. hooray for them.
i'm pretty neutral on the subject, mostly because, other than questionable treatment of farmers, i have seen no evidence to avoid gmo's for health reasons.. basically, my neutrality boils down to the stance that i'll buy non-gmo, so long as the price is reasonable.
If it means we can produce more food globally, make it pest, disease and drought resistant, store it longer and it's safe to eat, I'm for it.
The downside is that it's often more expensive to buy the seed in the first place and it often has its reproductive gene turned off so you have to buy new every year instead of keep some back each year to replant.
