  The WT is setting themselves up for another fall with this one. I thought the overlap idea had them off the hook, but no, now they have tied a definite time period to their prophecies again . They never learn.

  The point is that the intent of the overlap was NEVER to give themselves decades or even hundreds of years. They quickly realised that the original article was ambiguous enough for there to be confusion and they have tried on several occasions to readjust things. I have sat through 3 talks at a DC and two CAs where this has been discussed. The one at Brighton DC was handled by a Bethel speaker and he was absolutely clear that the ones in the latter overlap would be advancing in years (around their 60s) now. They have also revisited this in the WT.

  I would agree this might leave 30 or even more years at the far extent but the implication was clear. Don't think 30 years - think ALOT less.

  I disagree that this is a new understanding of the generation (yet again). This is damage limitation on their crazy, madcap and completely illogical explanation from 2010.

  I do agree that they never learn. They just know not enough people will follow their gut and leave.

  IMHO this article serves two key purposes, one of which is, as others have pointed out, to generate urgency and ensure a sense of imminence is the dominant position. Any who express caution about this will once again be marginalised.

  The other key purpose seems to be to tackle the whole 1914-2014, 100 years thang. They are hitting it head on, celebrating the fact it's been 100 years. This undermines any seditious talk about the ridiculous nature of the whole affair. They are then tying the two together to basically try and ensure all the faithfull are 100% clear that the end is not just close, but really, really close. They, as usual, seek to do this without making any real commitment on timescale.

  The reality is that most witnesses seem to operate quite happily with a 5 year timeframe. 1-2 years is too close if nothing matches the expectation (e.g. religion being turned on the UN). 4-5 years is close enough to feel like they don't have to worry about paying the mortgage off and they need to keep looking busy in WT activities. If you start going much beyond that then people will slack off.

  I would expect more rhetoric over the next few months, perhaps up to and beyond the international conventions next year, that reinforces this take on the generations and 1914. I would not be surprised if it then calms down a bit otherwise they will be in danger of having to commit to something concrete. They can then sit back for a couple of years before having to work out how they are going to handle the lack of prophetic fulfillment towards 2019-2020.

  Don't forget as well that they are planning on finishing Warwick in 2017/2018 so you are looking at a load of fanfare then. This in itself provides plenty of distraction and opportunity to say how Jehovah is making these things happen just in time for the big A.

  Great shame on lots of levels if this is true.

  I liked SBF's posts, especially on the topic of the demise of the WTS. We have lost several really good contributors over the recent past and it's a shame that another one is off.

  Hope he comes back.

  The one interesting thing is that clicking on links to jw.org from here could be used to potentially identify you by the WTS.

  The web server request logs show the source site so the jw.org webmasters can identify every click through from here to jw.org. They also know the IP address of the client browser (i.e. your IP address).

  Now it wouldn't take a genius to compare those IP addresses with ones that are related to page requests that did not come from this site. This would include those requests related to a jw.org user who has logged in. The user account does include information that could be used to identify a user, especially if this user is an elder with additional access rights to jw.org.

  This process is not 100% foolproof. There is every chance that if there has been some time between visits to jw.org, and certainly if you have rebooted your router, then your public IP will have changed so the two visits could not be linked. If you are using the internet in a public place then your IP address may have been used by someone else who just happened to go onto jw.org. Also given that multiple users in a house will share the same public IP address there is no real way of proving that the two requests came from the same person.

  I am not given to paranoia or conspiricy theories but if you are concerned about any risk to your identity being exposed then it is safest not to click through. Just cut'n'paste the link into another tab. It may be that the WTS privacy policies mean they would not do this or use the data in a proactive way but better to be safe than sorry.

  John Lennon: Imagine.....

  there's no heaven...... it's easy if you try.... i am not a huge fan of the beatles, not a fan of john lennon really either.

  however, this song is one that i think most people tend to like for its airy feel and sentiment.

  the funniest thing to me is how the opening 9 words of this song really really really make one think about belief.. honestly for one second trying to imagine there is no heaven, it is easy if you try.

  At a recent village hall do a bunch of the kiddies sang Imagine. They changed the words where you have imagine no heaven, hell and religion. I think they missed the point of the original song.

  I know of a few stag dos where the lads have gone paintballing on a pretty much don't ask don't tell basis. I was invited to one but declined as I knew if it came out then I would likely have been removed as a Miserable Servant. That was when I cared. Of course, now I don't.

  I've always, always fancied it so would love to do it if I had the chance.

  a higher education is of no value when you allow yourself to slowly be baked in to the cult.

  the remarks above came from a sister who has a college degree in social science and biology and loved logic and critical thinking.

  we at jwn sometimes assume a higher education might help people see through the smoke and mirrors which did not happen in this case.

  New Homo erectus Skull Shakes up Palaeontology

  a fantastic homo erectus skull has been found in georgia - no not our former colony, the one in asia.. it is one of 5 that have been found at a site in dmanisi, it's the first homo erectus to be found outside of africa and it is in excellent condition.

  the fossils are dated at 1.8 million years ago and comparisions of the specimens have thrown doubt over the details of human evolution.. it is possible that species previously named as h rudolfensis , h gautengensis , h ergaster and possibly h habilis were actually all h erectus.

  the natural variation withing the species may be greater than thought previously.. the "lumpers" and the "splitters" are going to have plenty to argue about for years to come.. note to creationists - please read the article carefully.

  Hi Kate,

  18 months ago I had no major doubts about anything to do with the WTS. I now have a very, very different perspective.

  I never doubted creation but a number of things did not make sense such as the flood account, evidence of human existance way beyond 6000 years. constant ridiculing of any science that disagreed with the Bible, reasonings on Neanderthals etc. etc.

  I held onto a lingering belief that God exisits for some time but if you start to accept the facts as presented by commonly accepted science as it stands then you have the same questions that we, in our dub state, have attributed to the lost and godless. Things like why does an all powerful God allow suffering, where did God come from etc.

  There are all sorts of philosophical arguments around the acceptance or not of God's existance and, by extension, the answer to these questions but for me the proability of God existing in the way as described by the WTS is so close to zero as to make it irrelevent. I know there are plenty of people who leave the WTS and maintain a faith in God and Jesus but to me logic is shouting out the opposite view. Of course, where you end up is down to you and your choice. I would just urge you not to replace one narrow view with another.

  In response to your question about "can everything be explained" you may want to look up some information on the Theory of Everything. The problem science has at the moment is that it is a struggle to combine two major physcial frameworks described by General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics. If science could find a way of combining these two theories then it would effectively be a theory of everything.

  There are again, philosophical arguments around whether it is even possible to solve this problem but that's another one for Cofty and SBF I think ;-)
