[EDIT]
This is interesting....
http://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/w20140215/expectation-messiah/
Could the first-century Jews have calculated the time of the Messiah’s arrival on the basis of the prophecy of the 70 weeks recorded at Daniel 9:24-27? While that possibility cannot be ruled out, it cannot be confirmed. The fact is that there were many conflicting interpretations of the 70 weeks in Jesus’ day, and none come close to our present understanding. *
The Essenes, widely thought to have been a Jewish monastic sect, taught that two Messiahs would appear toward the end of 490 years, but we cannot be certain that the Essenes based their calculations on Daniel’s prophecy. Even if they had done so, it is hard to imagine how the Jews in general would have come to be influenced by the chronology of such a reclusive group.
In the second century C.E., certain Jews believed that the 70 weeks covered the period from the destruction of the first temple in 607 B.C.E. to the destruction of the second temple in 70 C.E., while others connected the fulfillment of the prophecy with the Maccabean period of the second century B.C.E. So there was no clear consensus as to how the 70 weeks should be counted.
If the timing of the 70 weeks had been correctly understood in the first century C.E., one would think that the apostles and other first-century Christians would have referred to it as proof that the promised Messiah had arrived right on time in the person of Jesus Christ. However, there is no evidence that the earliest Christians did so.
Another factor is worth noting. Gospel writers often pointed out that certain prophecies found in the Hebrew Scriptures were fulfilled in Jesus Christ. (Matt. 1:22, 23; 2:13-15; 4:13-16) Yet, not one of them connects Jesus’ appearance on earth with the prophecy of the 70 weeks.
In summary: We cannot confirm that people in Jesus’ day correctly understood the prophecy of the 70 weeks. However, the Gospels provide other sound reasons why the people would have been “in expectation” of the Messiah.
So one of the key prophecies that is used now to back up the timing of the Messiah was not important enough for the Jews of the time to understand when it pointed to the arrival of their messiah in their time...
Shame that the light did not get brighter for them...

Emergency relief fund for the Philippines. How will it work.
by joe134cd ini was just thinking it will be interesting to see how the wts emergency relief fund will operate in the philippines.
ok it worked well with the storm in florida, with cashing in on the insurance cheques.
sorry to generalize, but americans have the disposable income, and the insurance polices for things like this - a thing the wtbts finds very attractive.

Evolution of the Eye
by zound inafter doing some research on the evolution of the eye, i compiled this simple explanation of the key points.
anyone with greater knowledge please correct anything mistaken - and questions / comments welcome.
any writers that want to correct grammar/sentence structure issues would be great also.. .. .. .. an eye, simply put, is photoreceptors + structure.. the structure can be something as simple as a cup-shaped depression or pinhole lens, or as elaborate as our camera eye, an insects compound eye, or the mirror eyes of a scallop.

@cofty
That's hilarious that the Watchtower quoted Jerry Bergman since he an ex-JW.
I thought there were two Jerry Bergmans - one a YEC and one an ex-JW who had written about JW mental health issues. It would appear they are the same person.
The interesting thing there is that some parts of the ex-JW community respect his works on mental health yet they are subject to the same criticisms as his work on biology.
Just shows the importance of research on the research!

Great post.
The WTS did publish a similar argument to the one highlighted by Cantleave in the Awake of Jan 11.
http://wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/102011009#h=0:0-15:11
At the time I had not woken up but was reading The Greatest Show on Earth and had read about the evidence that the eye had evolved and was not irreducibly complex. This article got me thinking that they were not really answering the question, just throwing an alternative out there.
I then researched who Jerry Bergman was, who they had quoted. He is, it turns out, a young earth creationist with a particularly poor reputation amongst those he has debated with.
The other main quote is from a Swedish professor specialising in vision at the Lund University, Prof. Ronald H.H. Kröger.
His research suggests there is an advantage in the way the eye in vertebrates is built, especially when the creature is small. His paper here:
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0042698909003162
explains the evolutionary benefit. Certainly no suggestion that it was created there...
The WTS, of course, neglect to explain the context or source of their quotes thereby marshalling the likely already biased reader to the conclusion that the WTS would like.
The professor's research is interesting as it does suggest that there are evolutionary benefits over an eye like an octopus.

MAJOR DOCTRINE CHANGE IN 1/15/2014 WT ON GENERATION TEACHING
by EndofMysteries inthe generation scripture no longer is speaking about 'the end'.
i'll quote it...... side note: tons of lies in this article, i'll point out at the end of the post.
"yet, jesus words at matthew 24:34 give us confidence that at least some of "this generation will by no means pass away" before seeing the start of the great tribulation.".

@notsurewheretogo
I would agree with you on every point you make with one exception.
This is not huge change. They have made statements to the effect of this one several times though DA and CA items. I know, I've heard them.
What this is, is them clearly documenting the statements they have made in the past, making sure everyone is on the same page and quashing once and for all any idea that there is decades to go. Oh and all of this whilst giving themselves plausible deniability...

Assembly resolutions - did anyone ever take them seriously?
by LogCon inis there any site that has the assembly resolutions for download?.
-

Never been interested in them. They are just self-serving, empty and meaningless statements that can be used to fill a bit of space in the WT when talking about the "wonderful" spiritual "feast" that the world has enjoyed.
You can bet your life there will be one at the international conventions next August. I bet that it focuses on loyalty to the org.

The New Diary of Winston Smith
by WinstonSmith inwe had to go off grid for a time, time and half a time as we thought we had been outed.
fortunately it was a false alarm, but it was a stressful time.
i asked for my original diary thread to be deleted in case there could be anything on there to identlfy mrs smith and i. i am always very careful when posting, and am sure there was nothing on there, but felt it best to have it removed in order to be as cautious as a dove.

Finally sending a letter to the elders today
by Suraj Khan infigured i'd give them a shot to explain why i was expelled from the congregation 23 years ago without counsel or a jc.
dear sirs:.
i attended the xxxx congregation in the mid-1980s as a teenaged unbaptized publisher.

If you were never baptised the you cannot be disfellowshipped or even DA yourself.
Anyone who is not baptised and and then is no longer qualifies to be an unbaptised publisher is just considered a person of the world
