Major goof in the Sept 1 WT article on Babel and the origin of languages
by marmot injust wanted to point out something that another poster brought up in the thread on the agm rumours, the writing department included a photo of a cuneiform tablet in their article on the origin of languages with a caption that states it is from 3000 bc.
this would pre-date the global flood myth and the fanciful tower of babel story altogether, hah!.

And I don't see anything pedantic about what GoodStein pointed out. He was just stating the facts. Aren't we all interested in what is true and what is not?
Just added: my mistake to assume Goodstein is male.

If you are interested in Sumeria, take a look at the book: The Sumerians, Their History, Culture and Character by Samuel Noah Kramer. He includes an interesting aside regarding a possible connection between the name 'Shem' and Sumer by his teacher and colleague Arno Poebel published (and largely ignored) in the American Journal Of Semetic languages in 1941. It starts on page 297. He was curious given their pre-eminence and influence at the time, why there is no mention of them in the bible.
My own thought was that it was just more evidence that the Hebrew scriptures were written long after everyone had forgotten that the Sumerians even existed.

Do Witnesses Have Any Aspirations Anymore?
by minimus inwhen i was a kid, my family wanted me to reach out for any type of "privilege", whether it be cleaning the rest room or being an attendant.
obviously, reaching out to be a ministerial servant and elder were high on the list.. since college was a no no, we were to aspire to be something within the congregation.. i wonder if anyone aspires to be anything in the organization, at this point in time..

I think a lot of them would like to win the lottery. Indirectly of course (ahem) since they are not allowed to participate. But if Aunt Bess were to win, surely she would like to shower a bit of cash our way, right? Unless of course we were shunning her since she no longer accepted every bit of drivel from the GB.

There is so much wrong with that article, I don't even know where to begin. But let's throw this out there for a start.
If everyone before the event was speaking the same language (according to JW history this has to be sometime after 2370BC(E)) and the idea behind this was to thwart mankinds attempts to advance, how could a new group speaking Egyptian build the great pyramids before Abraham got there?

I thought Jesus said the identifying mark of true christains (his followers/disciples) would be the evident love among themselves (John 13:35). He didn't mention anything about an organized preaching work or doctrinal viewpoint about war.

by FadeToBlack infrom the back cover of the july 15th, 2013 study edition.. "look at the artwork!".
how many times have you said that to yourself or to others when you opened a new issue of this magazine?
i didn't use the same wording, but needless to say, i was stunned.

Sorry, tried to include image from dropbox, but so far, no luck. Can I say that word, 'luck'?
Apparently so. Didn't get zapped, yet.

From the back cover of the July 15th, 2013 Study edition.
"Look at the Artwork!"
How many times have you said that to yourself or to others when you opened a new issue of this magazine?
Exactly! I didn't use the same wording, but needless to say, I was stunned. Quite often I asked myself, WTH were they thinking? Sometimes (when I felt brave or was especially annoyed) I expressed the same dismay to my wife. Not always a good idea - YMMV.The beautiful pictures and photographs that are painstakingly produced are there for a purpose.
That's a relief. I thought they were just trying to take up space so they didn't need to produce so much scholarly text. I often wondered why (see older study editions) they felt the need to produce a painted (or simulated painting), pastel version of a picture for the cover and then show the actual picture it was based on, on the inside cover. On a related note: do the people creating this 'painstaking' artwork get to count their time?
They are teaching aids that make us think and feel.
Now we are getting somewhere. Actually, I think what they meant to say was: "They are teaching aids that make YOU think and feel what WE want you to think and feel." For a specific example, just look at the picture of the brother (probably the WT conductor) proudly displaying his personal study edition below the text in this edition. They can be especially helpful when we prepare for and participate in the Watchtower Study.
Especially if you have not prepared and/or haven't already made a comment. You can still salvage a few brownie points by making a comment on the pictures at the end of the study. The conductor at our hall likes to do picture discussion during the wrapup. I guess it really is the "icing on the cake: as one brother commented in the text.Bonus Points: Speaking of 'teaching aids' , how many can you identify in the artwork on the last page? I'll get the ball rolling...
1. Study article should be highlighted in multiple colors. Obviously, the more colors used, the better. More colors='more spiritually-minded'. You didn't just go thru this once! You want to glean every last morsel of food/fodder provided at the proper time. -
