i was just driving back from the store on a street where a young man was killed a few years back, as he was murdered right on the street i often think of this every time i drive back from the store.
his house was about 100 feet from where his body lie in the street and blocks from my house.. i actually feel safe where i live and do know where to go and not to in toronto but crime happens everywhere no matter where you are, you can live in the quietest neighbourhood and right next door the worst can and has happened.
do you know where to walk at night and where not too in your town?
I've lived in my current neighborhood for almost 2 years and have always felt safe here. That changed just a bit last week when in a nearby neighborhood, a 16 year old boy walked in a house in the middle of the afternoon and raped a 9 year old girl. The mother had just stepped 2 doors away to visit a neighbor and the creep took advantage of the opportunity. So now, yeah, I'm a bit concerned, although I agree that crime can happen just about anywhere, anytime.
I don't have a problem going places alone at night; I've just never worried much about it. I'm careful but I don't want my life and what I do dictated by fear.

XenaW Thanks! It's hard to believe that we have actually DONE IT!! Coz y'know, the Bucs are Superbowl virgins But not for long baby!! Heheh
And hey, I admire your loyalty to your Packers When they played the Bucs here, a lot of Wisconsinites (Wisconsiners??) came down and were complaining because it was COLD here! LOL I was at a theme park the day before the game and there seemed to be a sea of Packer jackets everywhere. I think that's pretty cool that so many fans made the trip down. Lot to be said for you Cheeseheads
Rocketman, I was very impressed with the way they played too. In fact, this game against the Eagles had me very worried as I was afraid Brad would get hurt or the Bucs would choke, etc. But they really played hard and now I think we've got a good chance against Oakland, although I had hoped we'd be facing Tennessee. Ah well. And Gruden...yay! what a coach!!

I'm saddened to hear of what you've been through with your family. I think you hit the nail on the head when you labeled it dysfunctional. I can relate to much of what you've described, as my mother and the rest of my family save my sister have supported my oldest brother, who molested me and others for years. This is not what I and many others are talking about when we say we would still love our children, even if they committed horrible crimes.
I've never expected my mother to stop loving my brother; however, there's a difference between continuing to love someone and rationalizing, excusing, and denying their harmful behavior. THAT is dysfunctional. Loving my child does NOT mean allowing him/her to escape responsibility for his/her actions. In fact, I think that is actually the opposite of real love. Sometimes, and it sounds like this is what you've done, we have to detach from those who cause harm, even tho we may continue to love them. I've detached myself from my family as they are harmful to me and I don't choose to accept that dysfunction in my life any longer. This doesn't mean that I don't still love my parents. I do.
I also do not offer any judgments for those who do NOT feel love for family members who have caused great damage. I am merely trying to point out that we can totally let go while continuing to feel love.
