The problem is once you get depressed as I did after becoming physically ill, your self esteem plummets. Then for a sister all she has left is the ministry to make her feel she is a worthwhile person. If she can't do that a woman gets more depressed and feels more worthless and round and round she goes, from my experience. I feel for you both.

I'm so sorry your wife is not well. I think if you are one of those people who, when they ask for volunteers, don't start looking around at other people but think could I do this it is very difficult to say no. When you think that I really believed that people would die without the preaching work, what else could I do? Do you think she is beginning to see what's really going on?

Describe What a Jehovah's Witness Elder Is Like
by minimus ini know what they are supposed to be like.
but at this point in time, do you think the elders look joyful?
are they serious bible students?

Absolutely DJS, there are good people who find themselves trapped in that corrupt system. May the force be with you and let's hope the Jedi win.

I'm glad you got through it and didn't have too difficult a time. Of course there is some good stuff talked about or many of us wouldn't have stayed as long as we did but overall, well, as you say, obeying the big stick to pioneer ruined my health.

Anyone every been cut out of family pictures?
by love2Bworldly ini've been thinking about something lately that bothers me.
i mean it happened years ago, but it just seems really sick.
when i was disfellowshipped, my sister took all of her pictures that had me in it, cut me out and saved the rest of the pictures.

My mother took down all the photos with me in, including my wedding photo and a baby picture of me with my sisters. Only the fact that I used to visit my father, who was never a JW, when my baby was born that I found out.

Selective memories and disfellowshipping
by Really?! ini've been out around 20 years (da'd), but recently i've really started to struggle with certain aspects of relating to family members who are still in, as well as my own thoughts and feelings about my upbringing and my personal views about god/life the universe.
i have an older sibling and my mum who are still in.
we are a small family and my dear grandmother, who was not in, passed away around a year ago.

Hi Really?! and welcome. Yes it is so frustrating when everything is blamed on the person who left. They made their decision, JWs will say. They just can't see that they have made a decision to shun their own flesh and blood, they could decide not to shun and face the consequenses, but life is full of consequenses. Personally I feel the world is full of problems, we can give to charity, we can help our neighbours, but the very least we can do is look after our own family, surely? Glad to have you with us.

Same sex marriage legalised in the UK at midnight tonight!!!
by DuvanMuvan intitle pretty much explains it all.
lots of people are getting married at midnight tonight.. what do you guys think?
maybe if anyone gets called on by a jw this weekend you can ask them what they think about it.. im just glad because it shows that religion doesn't define our conscience, that basic human decency can prevail over time and hopefully, these types of gradual but big changes will be present in the wts too in the future .

Bigmac, words have power, they describe real things. Marriage is an ancient concept from a time when unions were all about property and women being used in negotiations for wealth and power. Now marriage is a word denoting two people loving each other and wanting to tell the world about it. Times change and the meanings of words change don't they?

My JW elder husband was lovely, he really tried to help the brothers and sisters. We visited the sick and depressed - there were a hell of a lot of those. But he was only an elder for four years before we left. He found out what really went on in the body of elders when he started attending their meetings, then it was only a matter of time.
