Phoebe I'm so glad you enjoyed Italy, a beautiful country. I loved Florence and Pisa, and the Italian lakes in the north are amazing. When you leave the cult it's so good to see the world, whether it be churches or lakes and mountains.

What really should be the role of Women in the congregations?
by Old Navy inthe presumably "biblical" practice of limiting the way women participate in congregational matters of the wtborg cult inc. (as well as certain other sects of christendom) may be a gross mis-interpretation of what paul meant.
i'm inclined to agree completely with this account of what paul really meant.. thoughts anyone?
aren't women more deserving of greater participation and respect?.

the women who are oppressed in the WT are the wives of over-worked elders. They pay the price for other people's expectations too.
I know I was one of them. The difference is I was treated with no respect at all. No dick, no deference.

Well Old Navy after six hours only five people have posted on this thread and I think three of them are women. I doubt very much if this male- dominated forum cares about the role of women in JWs.
I found your link interesting, I had forgotten about Philip's four daughters who were prophetesses in Acts. I vaguely remember the WTS saying something about the gifts of prophecy, speaking in tongues etc that they had in the first century have now passed away so we don't have men or women with gifts of prophecy now. I think that's the limp argument they used to treat women as second class citizens.
As Diogenesister pointed out how can Paul's 'I do not permit a woman to speak' be applied to holding a microphone. For that matter how can it be applied to being a literature servant?

Return of the Dub (plus surprise guest)
by TerryWalstrom inreturn of the dub (plus surprise guest)dealing with just one frisky, bright-eyed jehovah’s witness is a handful.one on one is manageable.
two jw’s is more like juggling chainsaws or french kissing alligators.i had a return visit the other day and now, the jw was returning the 2nd time, but with another dub.what would my strategy be?
that’s how the day was spent.

and all the wicked animals too like bunny rabbits, deer, kittens,
This made me smile then got me thinking Terry, why kill all those animals at the flood and why plan an Armaggedon to kill the wicked? Why couldn't he just stop the hearts of the wicked ones and make them vanish? Save all that fire, brimstone and mess. He's the creator of the universe isn't he and fire and flood is such a messy solution, apart from as you so clearly showed a waste of time.

The Dub At My Door (is back for Return Visit)
by TerryWalstrom inthe dub at my door ___________________i’d rather have a root canal than agree to a sit down with an active jehovah’s witness.i’m an ex-jw.
for good reason.
fool me once....i’m an activist and an author of a book or two exposing and vilifying the destructive jw cult organization.yet i agreed.

Terry that was a joy to read. Your genuine concern for other people shines through and your patience in trying to help Earl reveals how mature you are. I don't mean old :) It's interesting that you think the authenticity of the Bible is the most important issue, thanks for that reminder. I am going to give that some thought.
Yes I read Thirty Years a Watchtower Slave when I was sixteen. My mother was horrified. I thought it was a very bitter book and for that reason I didn't leave at that time.

God expresses his perplexity at his own creation
by slimboyfat injust got to share this, zizek at his very best.
explaining how the traditional view of the ransom makes no sense and reverts christianity to paganism where god is subject to a superior notion of justice.
how the injunction from jesus to hate mother, father, brothers and sisters is really a call for a non-hierarchical society, of which the holy spirit is a symbol.

I don't know. I think Jesus was just saying that being his follower was more important than anything else.
Exactly, more important than keeping your family safe, more important than raising children to live in the real world. They were under Roman occupation! Christians were ripped to pieces in the arena, burnt as human torches or crucified. How is that sane or aligning with objective reality? What was the point of that suffering?

Just need to vent a little
by Phoebe inin the last week i have had three visits from brothers.
so 6 witnesses in all as they come in pairs.
now considering i used to go to the meetings, sit by myself and literally no one talked to me - ever - why the concern all of a sudden?.

Pheobe you don't need to 'sort yourself out' at all. You've raised children with minds of their own who have all gone to university and now have good jobs. Well done! Perhaps your anxiety disorder will go with a few more months away from this horrible religion where people let you sit all on your own for twenty years! Take care.

When if was 18 or 19 I went to a convention and had the feeling that something was wrong, like something was missing. So not as young as you, I was a bit slow on the uptake. But I do remember when I was eight I was at the book study when I just started crying and couldn't stop. I was overwhelmed with the feeling that now, with experience of it, I would call raw grief, dreadful pain and sadness. What that was about I don't know.
