Why does it affect us so deeply?
by stuckinarut2 ini was having a great chat with a valued friend and fellow forum member today on the phone.. we were discussing how deeply we all get affected by jw interactions - even years after fading or disassociating.. you know what i mean.
those days when we run into jws who we considered to be our close friends.
or "loving shepherds" who don't act kindly.

It's more like a virus that invades your body when you're in a week state and takes over your DNA to multiply itself. We eventually find the strength to fight it off and develop antibodies to prevent it returning.

Potiphar Peleg was jokingly on one of the elder's baby names list. She ended up as Abigail. Don't mind Abigail but Abishag?

Apostasy: The Movie - Directed by Daniel Kokotajlo
by darkspilver indaniel kokotajlo's new film apostasy has it's world premiere at the toronto international film festival in september 2017. apostasy.
family and faith come into conflict for two jehovah’s witness sisters in manchester, when one is condemned for fornication and the other pressured to shun her sibling.. this fresh, unadorned first feature from director dan kokotajlo carries an unmistakable note of authenticity from its very first scenes.
set in a jehovah's witness community in england, the film's strength and power lies in its directness.. apostasy depicts the growing rift in a family — a mother and two daughters — who are rigorously devoted to their religion.

I saw this on Saturday evening in Manchester with my daughter. It was 100% accurate which left me feeling limp with emotion at the end. The attitude of the elders to Louisa who wanted to get reinstated. Are you repentant enough? Over and over again! A young pregnant girl all on her own and unwell too. I wanted to deck them. So accurate. The lack of grief at the death. Shocking. It made my daughter cry and she's never been a witness. Brilliant film.

I sent off my application to study Palaeobiology (MSc) at Bristol uni and ...
by LoveUniHateExams in... they've accepted me!
finance is already sorted - they're waiting for me to give them my new student number so that they can start paying me.
just need to formally accept bristol's offer and sort out accommodation.. accommodation should be ok - i've been told priority is given to new students, plus i'm enrolling onto a program for a real degree as a postgraduate - i won't be studying gender studies or some crap like that.

I mean .. we are people right .. we always complaint or express what we do not agree on. But they don't.
Sara you are a very intelligent woman. If people in a religion are too afraid to express themselves, what does that tell you?
Anyway, what I'm really afraid of, and that's what you also tell in your story, is that as soon as you get baptized they sort of turn on you.
That's exactly right Sara. When you are studying you can question the beliefs but as soon as you are baptised you can be disfellowshipped if you question anything. They like to keep the intelligent people with questions away from the rest. What does that tell you?

In some few cases the house may be the cause of trouble and the best thing to do is move out. - WT, Dec15, 1966
Wow snugglebunny 1966 was the year we moved house because my mum was terrified of demons. She'd heard that the area we lived was an ancient burial ground. We left JW friends five doors away and even gave up our pets. I remember giving away our piano to a neighbour across the road. It was an old one so she probably thought that was demonised too.
That watchtower article has a lot to answer for. She never stopped throwing second hand stuff out even after that. Things handed down from loving relatives. Things we needed!

Hi and welcome IamwhatIam. So glad you're enjoying life now outside the cult. You're right it does hurt at first but you soon build a new life and it's so good to be calling the shots instead of being a slave to a load of window cleaners who know nothing.

What is the number 3 talk?
by carla ini was enjoying the funny memes thread https://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/4796195022045184/funny-ex-jw-memes.
but what is the number 3 talk?
there were a few references to that particular talk.

I remember the school overseer asking me how long I took to prepare a talk 3 and I said about four hours. He said four hours for a four minute talk is way too long, you only needed to spend half an hour on it.
Yes but what about arranging to meet with the other 'sister' and rehearsing it? Yeah and as days of future past says, working out what the householder should say, making it sound fairly realistic.

Birthday
by TheFadingAlbatros insince when does the organization of jehovah's witnesses prohibit the celebration of birthdays?
and who in particular has officially imposed such an interdiction within this organization?
this prohibition has no biblical foundation, but plays a vital role in separating families, making non-jws out to be idolaters in the eyes of jws...

This prohibition has no biblical foundation, but plays a vital role in separating families, making non-JWs out to be idolaters in the eyes of JWs..
You nailed it FadingAlbatros. That's the name of the game. It's the same with all the crazy teachings about holidays, separate people from their families, friends and entire support system. Then they have to make the JWs their support and can never leave. It's a cult.
