I was being ironic. I just don't understand how you can think that one sexless birth story was made up and the other is gospel truth. That's what made me smile. However I don't want to criticise your belief system. I feel you have a right to hold those beliefs and I am not into deriding people's belief system. Clarity started the OP talking about how stories of gods tend to have cross-overs and I have noticed this too, that's all. Take care.

You're right I used the wrong phrase. I should have said sexless birth. That was what reminded me of Jesus. However I have to say you made me smile when you said about Krishna:-

A few years ago I had to organize some publicity for the Hindu festival of Diwali in the town where I work and on researching it, because I didn't know much about it, I found that Krishna had a virgin birth too, supposedly in 3228 BCE.
'Krishna was born without a sexual union, but by divine "mental transmission" from the mind of Vasudeva into the womb of Devaki.' Thought it was interesting.

I've always been fascinated with reality Terry. When I left the WTS I read book after book trying to find what reality is. Sometimes I had to wait a week ot two between books because it was so exhausting. My belief system was constantly bruised and battered. Not afraid any more. Thing about reality is ...... well reality is. We can't fight it. Why be afraid of it?

Yes 'Dionysus is another savior-god' rings a bell with me Clarity. I think, casting my mind back to an art history course I did years ago, that there is a link between Dionysus and Jesus. There are statues from classical Greece of Hermes carrying the baby Dionysus which have been compared to paintings of St Christopher carrying the Christ Child across a river.
Dionysus is the god of wine-making and the grape harvest equivalent to the Roman Bacchus. Jesus did turn water in to wine. It's such a shame that as legends merged it became a bad thing to hold a Bacchanalian party within Christianity. More revelling, less self-sacrifice I say

Sometimes I think it may be a culture clash, Chariklo. The first time I was accused of talking bs on this board I was a bit shocked. It is quite a strong thing to say in the UK. Especially when one is only quoting Tacitus! Oh my goodness, dearie me, well golly gosh!
do you remember going door to door and if you went to a beautifil home with a beautiful garden often the person with you would say -'these wont want to hear the message, they already have their paradise'?.
it seems to me that was what a lot of the message of the new system was about.
who wouldn't want to choose a beautiful part of the world and build your own house on it without paying for the land or building materials?.
Yes Chariklo, I think it shows that it is a religion that often appeals to those that have given up on making a life in the real world. They've given up on education,getting a proper job and buying a decent home, finding it all too hard. So they just live on fantasies. It reminds me of magazines that have a target readership. They set out a lifestyle in the mag to a certain group of people they are targeting and then they keep reinforcing it to make the target group feel 'at home' and keep them purchasing the magazine. Seems like that's what the WTS do to a certain extent.
after seeing the thread on books to read before baptism, i laugh about how my pre-baptism session went.. as a born-in with both father and grandfather serving as servants (prior to elder arrangement) i certainly knew the answers to the questions in the yellow "your word is a lamp to my foot" book that they asked at that time.
the brother who was asking the questions was the assistant congregation servant and not the sharpest knife in the drawer (i am being kind).
he was a very loving brother but was getting up in age, couldn't see very well and ... you get the picture.. we sat down in the library after the sunday meeting and he opens the book and starts to ask the questions.
I remember the only baptism question I got wrong was the one about disfellowshipping. I answered the question about what the purpose was by saying I thought after looking at all the reasons given that it was to punish people for wrongdoing. Of course the elder said no, no no it's a loving act to try and help people! Yeah right. At fifteen I just couldn't see it. Should always go with your insticts! If I havn't learnt that by now I never will.
