In the past I heard it termed, "Our internal ministry," by an elder who didn't want to actually go in the D2D. It was as you say a way to finish out time. And it makes their monthly report look good and either get or keep an appointment so they can be looked up at in awe at by the rest of the rank and file.

by RULES & REGULATIONS inmy nephew called me sunday night to tell me that his nine year old son was giving his first talk.

In JW talks, Is it unpopular to read from an actual Bible now?
Yes it is.
TabletsI forgot, I should use the WT approved term, electronic devices, were just really catching on when I pretty well dropped out of sight at meetings, but I was given a stern talking to by a thirty some odd year old elder about how I should be a better example of keeping up to date with the society and their use of electronic devices instead of relying on hard copies of the Bible or publications. Besides the fact I was informed that paper copies were "really expensive and labor intensive" to produce when I could just go buy an electronic device and have everything right at my fingertips. What a muh-roon! -

Meetings and masks
by optimisticskeptic inas it warms up wearing masks at meetings is getting really old.
the numbers from the cdc don't take justify it in my opinion.
maybe come winter if things spike again.

My thinking is they're prob being over zealous because they created a bunch of anti-medical community idiots who aren't vaccinated.
Evidently you were not hearing the same message I was informed about. Masks and vaccines, still distancing. Even after the CDC and WHO allowed citizens to once again think for themselves WT is still refusing to follow current guidelines. They were several weeks slower than everyone in shutting down, and now they are even slower about opening things up.

What Does Prayer Actually Do?
by punkofnice inif you think it works, what is your evidence outside of possible coincidence?.
-

Apart form not actually doing anything, those doing the praying allow themselves to do NOTHING FURTHER !
Exactly! I said pretty much the same thing some time ago when I still attended meetings. I told an elder that instead of the prayers asking God to, "Help those who are not here due to personal difficulties to know we looovve them," that perhaps they should ask, "Give us the insight to notice the struggles of one another and take note of those not here with us, and then move us to take action and do something for them or with them so they know we care about them," because God does not magically perform miracles. He told me that I was showing a lack of faith by not trusting God to help them.

Hospitality for speaker
by road to nowhere inthere seem to be hospitality starting again.
fully vaccinated and assume masked.
neither a set in stone rule.

Hospitality?
Not from me! I told them a few years ago to take me off their assigned list, and thankfully I now no longer need to worry about any of that. It is NOT hospitality when it is forced upon one with the, "you are assigned to provide a meal for the speaker t his Sunday."
Even though I no longer attend except for the occasional Zoom pop-in I still make it a point to stop by any who are shut-in or for some other valid reason not able to have personal contact with other people. The only negative comment I have heard was second hand from a ministerial servant who complained that I was not an active JW and should not be associating with the active JW shut-ins or elderly.

Meeting announcement for emergency contact info of non-JW friends & relatives (?)
by LongHairGal ini just saw this post on reddit and can hardly believe it.. if i remember correctly years back they told you not to have anything to do with non-jw friends or relatives.
they discouraged you from bothering with non-jw family and to avoid them on holidays!!
i needlessly missed out on some delicious holiday meals with people who genuinely cared about me.

I think this is a wrong expectation that people in a congregation are going to care for anybody’s aged parents.
No offense taken. I agree with your comment, and perhaps the way I phrased "care" was misleading. Shortly before my mother died she was sitting at her front window watching passers-by and as it was just before 9:00 A.M. she would remark as a vehicle went by, "There goes bro. so-and-so to the meeting for service," or, "There goes sister so-and-so to the meeting for service." Then with a catch in her voice she said, "They go THAT way to the kingdom hall, and then they go the OTHER way home. But they NEVER stop here anymore! They JUST DON'T CARE!" My parents home was separated from the kingdom hall by only two residential homes.
So yes, while one should not expect that other people in a congregation are going to care FOR aged parents, those who profess to be the only true Christians who are identified by being the only ones on the whole earth who show Christ like love for fellow believers are IMO shown to be lying hypocrites when they willfully refuse to care ABOUT anyone who is aged, shut-in, or otherwise no longer one of the chosen few.

Is it because nobody can count on their so-called spiritual brothers and sisters to be there for them when things get bad?
IMHO that is it in a nut-shell. In my own case I saw that my parents were kicked to the curb, ridiculed, and ignored entirely by those who for so many years were always there, usually with their hands out claiming, "We looove you," Had it not been for my retirement savings to allow me extended care-giving trips, and a very kind DF'd family member who lovingly gave me relief breaks every couple weeks caring for my parents in their final few years they would have had no one. Not one single person from their congregation could be bothered to do anything other than tell me that I should put them in a home somewhere! Sorry (expletives deleted).

A military style weapon.
Gotcha. It's all about what looks scary! ANY weapon can be classified as a "military" style weapon. General George S. Patton's handguns most associated with him, and which are now in the Patton Collection of the West Point Museum, are a .45 Long Colt Single Action revolver, 1873 Army Model, and a .357 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver.
Personally as a licensed concealed carry permit holder my weapon of choice is a .45 Remington R1 semi-auto which holds 7 rounds in the magazine, and one in the pipe. And in nearly fifty years of being a permitted concealed carry handgun owner I have never shot anyone, only drawn my weapon twice, and both times it stopped a crime in progress merely by being seen by the criminal until police arrived. And none of my firearms have ever managed to load themselves, leave my house, and commit any crime. I guess they are not as "smart" as those scary guns the left screams, whines, and cries about!.
