  Are we losing our way a bit at JWN?

  firstly, i want to be crystal clear how grateful i am for jwn.

  it's been my place of support for over seventeen years and it's the first online space i direct anyone to if they are taking steps out of the cult.

  i am not bashing jwn - i love this place and appreciate the hard work and expense simon puts in to keep it going.

  This forum has always fluctuated politically over the years.

  Theres a reason there’s an actual politics category on here. That category has existed for at least as long as I’ve lurked on this forum. (Over 5 years.) Edit: the earliest post in the politics section is 16 years old!

  I think it seems different to you perhaps because instead of people discussing things rationally, one side pulls out the card of race, Hitler, Nazi, Orange Cheeto in order to shame the side they disagree with. That, of course, fosters more discussion and causes it to devolve into destroying one straw man argument after another.

  Theres an epidemic of putting emotions over rationality in politics lately. Emotions were always a factor, but people used to be able to put their emotions aside and make judgements based off of reason and logic.

  I saw The Last Jedi yesterday ... spoilers!

  yeah i saw ep 8 tlj yesterday.. first off, the special effects - a combination of cgi and practical - are fantastic, although with a budget of $200 million i expect them to be.. there are many issues i have with this movie and here's one: leia flying through space, i mean, wtf?!.

  yes, we know leia is luke's brother and so has some force-sensitivity - she talked telepathically to luke in the empire strikes back.. apart from that, she's never really used any abilities she may have or been taught the ways of the force ... and now she's flying through space!

  The SJW aspects for me had nothing to do with race. That wasn’t an issue.

  Star Wars was always a pretty diverse place.

  It had more to do with the perceived tokenism and forced aspect of it. It didn’t feel organic to the story.

  I think that says more about the current political climate than it does Disney.

  In my opinion, the SJW stuff stands out only because our current society is looking for it and because lefty blogs want to make a character Pansexual or point out how “OMG STAR WARS HAS STRONG WIMMEN!” (When it always did have strong women) Then cue the inevitable reactions of the rightie blogs reacting to the leftie blogs.

  The over the top social analysis of everything pop culture stirs up the controversy. It really is a post-modernist attitude and the consequential push back against the post modernism by classical liberalism.

  Objectively, Solo was a decent sci-fi flick. If I didn’t know the character of Han Solo from IV and V, I would have felt good about the film. But as a film about the early days of a character we already knew so well, it failed. Not because of SJW agenda, but because it was a poor portrayal of a beloved character of cinema.

  Also, most Trump supporters I am friends with wouldn’t shun me if I decided to support another politician.

  I cant say the same for a Democrat who migbt find out you support Trump.

  ”He’s a trump supporter! You shouldn’t date him.”

  There is a little room for moderates in the Democratic party, and almost no room for moderates in the Republican party.

  That is a gross and naive misrepresentation. Trump is not a moderate, at least on the surface. The policies he’s put forth, though, have been somewhat moderate. However, the only moderates in real life that I know are republican or are starting to lean republican.

  My views are best represented by the libertarian left. But there’s no representation in the Democratic Party for any kind of fiscal libertarianism. Now, the republicans are starting to adopt a more laissez faire position to social issues.

  I can have a rational discussion with conservatives about gay rights and my stance on adopting a less interventionist military policy.

  However, no one that is on the left in my circle of friends can have a rational discussion about Trump’s tax bill, strict immigration enforcement, or gun rights.

  Every conservative friend I have supports the rights of gays to get married. Some of them are even atheist.

  No Democrat friend I have supports an artists right to turn down a custom job that offends his conscience when that artist happens to be Christian and White.

  I find conservatives more open to discussing ideas and less likely to take offense if you have a different point of view.

  You really need to sit down and try to have a friendly chat with a republican, Lee.
