  No, culture is. Black culture is rotten. They need to stand up and fix it.

  I find this comment unhelpful and unnecessarily inflammatory.

  It’s not black culture that’s rotten. It’s inner-city culture.
  

  Black, White, Hispanic...either of those raised in poverty in the inner city have a much higher likelihood of ending up in a life of crime and never ending poverty.
  

  I just recently moved my family from a small town of about 40,000 to the second largest metropolitan area in Florida.

  The schools here are overwhelmed. The school board is inaccessible to parents, teachers are underpaid and schools are understaffed. School administrators are obsessed with politics and the latest cause du jour.

  My kids aren’t dummies. They’re sharp little “turdles,” as my wife and I lovingly call them. But in the town we came from, they were average, at best. In this city, they’re top of their class, straight A students without even breaking a sweat.

  I can’t quite put my finger on the issue exactly or what can be done about it, but there’s something about living in the inner city and having limited resources because of how many people are living on top of each other that makes the education system suffer.

  What do you mean by “happen for a reason”? Do you mean they happen to affect something in the future? That I don’t believe.

  But earthquakes do happen for a reason. That reason being that tectonic plates in the earth crash with each other.

  Holocausts happen for a reason. That reason being that man frequently underestimates the capacity of their fellow man for committing evil acts.

  But they didn’t happen because of fate.

  However, for everything that happens to mankind, you can point to a root reason that caused it to happen.

  Well, there are consequences to every action.

  So yes, everything happens for a reason. Doesn’t mean it’s always your fault. But it does happen for a reason. There are rational ways to explain everything that happens, even if that explanation is that someone was being irrational.

  When ANYTHING happens, ask yourself, “Why did this happen?” You’ll always have an answer of some kind to that question. That answer is called a “reason” something happened.

  Can you name one thing that didn’t have a “reason” for occurring?

  i'm 48 years of age and have been in the truth for my whole life.. i suffer from ankylosing spondilitis and have for many many years.

  it's a debilitating form of spinal arthritis and the symptoms of this auto-immune disorder affect more than my spine.

  It's an inevitability here in the U.S.

  Even Trump, a self-proclaimed teetotaler (I doubt he is), has publically stated that he would support a bill for the decriminalization of Marijuana.

  On leaving JW's and hating religion...

  it's been nearly 4 years now since i completely woke up to the watchtower lies.. thinking back on my jw life, during the time i believed, the organization truly did teach us to hate all beliefs that were contrary to the watchtower's.. i hated "false" religion.. so, when i finally woke up and applied critical thinking to my beliefs, i just went on hating religion in general...only this time i added jw's to that list.. a few months of waking up, i decided to base my beliefs on evidence.

  i didn't want to have a set of beliefs unless there was some logic or evidence behind it.

  so, now i consider myself an atheist.. and i kept on hating religion.. within the last six months or so, something has changed.

  It's been nearly 4 years now since I completely woke up to the Watchtower lies.

  Thinking back on my JW life, during the time I believed, the organization truly did teach us to hate all beliefs that were contrary to the Watchtower's.

  I hated "false" religion.

  So, when I finally woke up and applied critical thinking to my beliefs, I just went on hating religion in general...only this time I added JW's to that list.

  A few months of waking up, I decided to base my beliefs on evidence. I didn't want to have a set of beliefs unless there was some logic or evidence behind it. So, now I consider myself an atheist.

  And I kept on hating religion.

  Within the last six months or so, something has changed. I suddenly don't hate religion anymore.

  I'm still an atheist, but I've been reading a lot on Western Civilization and the contributions made to liberalism by religious ideas. The idea of a free press was started by religious people in an effort to get the bible into the hands of the layperson.

  The idea of being tolerant of others beliefs, even if you disagree with them, started because of religion. John Locke was extremely influential on the enlightenment period and the liberal movement. The framers of the United States Constitution was heavily influenced by Locke and other liberal thinkers of their day.

  I kind of took a detour there. I guess what I'm saying is that, even though I don't agree with believers and see no evidence of it:

  IT'S OK TO BELIEVE IN GOD.

  I truly feel that holding on to that tradition in our society is important to the preservation of individual human rights.

  I do still detest certain religious practices, like the honor killings in the middle east, treatment of women, treatment of homosexuals. But religion, in general, has come a long way since the middle ages. Islam needs a reformation on the human rights front, I feel. But other than that, I think religion is continuing to get less oppressive over time. Hell, even Saudi Arabia is allowing women to drive now!

  Anyhow, sometimes when leaving a group like the JWs, the pendulum can swing wildly the opposite direction. I think my pendulum is starting to get more centered now. Though I still am basing my beliefs on evidence, I no longer have any issue with people that want to believe in God.
