Cofty ..." what better method"....secular,secularism which is well established, more effort from secularists to cleave the hold religious influence has on our government and education. There are efforts towards this goal, perhaps a common purpose for the benefit of people which supersedes religious hope/reward which was/is still ignorantly seen by many as useful and alas necessary.

Was/Is Religion Useful Even if it isn't True?
by cofty inin his book "the righteous mind" jonathan haidt proposes that religion served - and continues to serve an important role in bringing about cohesion within non-kin groups.. to put it very briefly haidt advocates a form of group selection but only insofar as it applies to humans.
our unique brains have made it possible for us to cooperate in groups in ways that are impossible for all non-human species.
despite their intelligence you will never see two chimps helping each other to carry the same log or one chimp pulling down a branch while the other removes the fruit.. his description is that humans are 90% chimp and 10% bee.

Cofty .... "partly rational"...the capability to reason must give us the choice to reject any 'benefit' of religion for a better method which encompasses group thinking. If their is a ' part' of our psych or makeup which is not rational it would be interesting as the judicial system would have to take into account when dealing with irrational behaviour excuse.

Shunning - Are Mothers Most Fanatical?
by Lostandfound inon many posts by those with experience of df or da shunning, it look to me that the most fanatical observers of the shunning practise are mothers, and when a person approached parents about their own doubts or intentions, approaching the mother the most daunting prospect .
odd that visiting warwick leaflet has a picture of a meeting of some sort with a room comprising men only, given the subordinate role given to women, one might think they would be more liberal over shunning close ones, but not so.. what drives this, is it grabbing an opportunity to be more visible by their loyalty, or low level of education of a lot of dubs so that the sisters blindly accept direction or authority.
i might have expected some kick back against the shunning practise by sisters giving evidence to their independence of thought.. our real thinkers here will be able to explain this fanaticism of loyalty better.

I have to say it was the opposite in my case, my mother always was warm and welcoming despite my father torturing her mind . She did always have some words to try ' in her way ' to encourage me to look at an article in the literature, but was never forceful in her manner. She passed away quite recently a faithful jw. I spent a lot of precious time with her towards the end which she, despite suffering dementia thoroughly enjoyed. My father on the other hand would go out of his way to avoid me when he saw me at the care home, my mother despite her condition realised his behaviour which was always a sadness for her. So once again in my situation my father was worse.

I wonder if the carts will survive the big A .... they will be useful for transporting rotting corpses, i wonder if the 'sisters' will help, and perhaps stop for coffee between corpse dumpings. Will they give a thought to the dead pregnant mums and babies who were oh so wicked that they had to be exterminated in the same way by the hand of their loving god in the great flood of noah !!

paradise could last twice as long elsewhere
by waton in6 planets around the dim, slow burning star trappist-1, have the temperature to permit [almost better, longer] "everlasting life" in paradise.
this distant "sun" will give light for another ~ 10 billion years, unlike our sun, which is already half done., with only ~ 4 to go.
everlasting, overlapping life on our planet: naturally impossible.

In the 60s we used to imagine that we might be able to travel to other planets ( with the help of jehovah of course !! ) as we reasoned on the purpose of the vastness of his creation.....i guess a conditioned mind can take take you into realms of delusional madness !! Lol

The bike i was on was a factory continental G T i remember the five speed box took some getting used to. When I'm ever in London i cant resist a visit to the 'ace cafe' on the north circular... the rocker is still in my blood eh.,...the jw is long gone !!

Oh yes! Would you believe i was a jw rocker along with other 'brothers' in the cong' we rode our bsa's , triumphs , matchless and nortons to the hall parking in an enclosed side corridor with access to the street. Even a future elder rode a nice norton twin. Another older brother who from time to time we assisted in his workshop ( probably to keep us gainfully employed) owned a manx racing norton . I rode from my home wearing a sensible jacket only to change into my tatty leather jacket with studs and painted script on the back ' 100 rockers '. Only the elder is still a jw. By coincidence at a recent funeral of a jw family member an older sister reminded me of those 60s days saying " oh i remember you and ..... with your motorbikes and leather jackets". Actually i started my biking days with a couple of 50s LD lambrettas ,but when i rode a friends royal Enfield cafe racer i was hooked. There were quite a lot of 'mods'where i lived i knew most of them from school and where they hung about as i passed on my bike i would get a few choice words shouted at me but mostly we were pretty friendly. One instance at the cafe we frequented, which was close to the ice rink where a lot of mods went we had a bit of a scuffle when someone kicked our bikes and they collapsed like dominoes !! I was also a big rock n roll fan and to this day i still play in a retro rock n roll band....ahhh great days !!

The constant drip of shunning policy from watchtower laced with the consequential action if a person fails to comply (which could result in being condemned at the big A if you defy the mother organization ) is an action which contributes to brainwashing. This concentration of fear does imo produce an enforcing climate to ensure compliance. Any belief system of indoctrination which results in brainwashing through fear for ones life could certainly violate the free will of those unfortunate enough to be so afflicted.
