  I’m not angry at this person. Only the card and the sentiment was annoying- because I’m highly aware that the intention is good but the message isn’t. I’m not annoyed at the intent, only the message, which is an assumption based on religious programming.

  I thought of responding to her only in a nice way. But I’ll leave it alone because I don’t want to invite any more “concern”.

  By the way, people have a right to their feelings. She has a right to feel concerned and other people have a right to feel annoyed.

  I haven’t been to a meeting in months. Just got a sympathy card in the mail from a “sister”. I don’t know her beyond her face. It really annoyed me. Why assume I’m “going through” something bad without asking me first? I’ve been feeling great! I feel like telling her how peaceful and happy I’ve been.   we had a melting pot type of congregation.

  i grew up with all types of witnesses , all with different backgrounds.

  I can say in the area I grew up in there was a lot of racism. Still is. In the English congregation there is against anything non-white. In the Spanish congregation there were prejudiced between ethnicities and racism against blacks. But, hey, if you read the magazines and literature from the early days all the way up to the seventies- it was a blatantly racist organization. Top down nonsense. All during the civil rights era in the US, the society was writing about how slavery was good and slaves should stay with their masters. They refused to fight apartheid in South Africa and shamed those who did...Hard for me to understand how they’ve attracted so many black people.

  i haven’t been on here in awhile and this is my second user name because i was busted by my pimi wife on the first one.

  i have been basically awake since 2013. i have a super dub wife that i love and don’t want to lose and my sick mom in the hall that is a true believer.

  stupid religion has gotten between my wife and i (of course).

  As the wife of a former elder, we had kids while he served, I was relieved when he stepped down. Elders have zero quality time to spend with their wives. Everything is congregation first, organization first. Leaves very little time for loving the one person who is supposed to be your partner. Stepping down could improve your relationship with her. Maybe then she’d be more open to your new ideas.

  As for the rest of those elder scumbags, I think you said it best, trust yourself:

  I’m a social worker in one of the poorest cities in the US. I can assure you that illegal immigrants here aren’t living the high life that you assume. If you consider that they get no access to healthcare insurance, IF (it’s a big IF) they get food stamps it won’t be enough to feed a family, they live in some of the most dangerous and decrepit areas, can’t get a decent job and wallow in poverty. It’s a sad life and not something others need to be afraid of. Plus, do your research- military spending and Medicare (insurance for ALL US citizens over 65) is what is bankrupting the country. Medicaid (for the poor) and food stamps are very small programs in comparison. But, historically, when everyone is feeling the financial pinch, people like to demonize the poor and people who look and live differently. Got to have a bad guy. But in the US, the bad guy eating up all the financial cake is the government through the military. Check the stats...

  Good memories of full-time service?

  perhaps not a topic for everybody... mine.. in both sp service in a foreign field in europe , the freedom and helping people to read and write in spanish .

  doing a lot of work in the congregations.. in missionary-service.. helping congregations in a third-world country and see good results in family relations.

  and the siestas from 13:00 to 15:00..... who has good memories of bethel?

  I pioneered 7 years from late teens to twenties. I never liked preaching, just felt I HAD to do more. Service itself was miserable but I was out there with a bunch of young people my age and enjoyed their company. I hung around for my friends. Once everyone started getting married and moving away, it wasn’t fun at all anymore. Then I got burnt out trying to pioneer and work full-time. I got severely depressed. Took myself to therapy, came out of depression, and quit pioneering. I was so happy to be done!

  Did anyone else have a parent who could be described as highly narcissistic who was a JW? How was that for you growing up? Which was worse - the narcissistic religion or the narcissistic parent?

  For me I feel like my parent was more toxic than the religion. She used the religion for control over her family and to fill herself up with admiration from others by being a SuperDub.

  I feel like I missed this stage, or it was severely delayed until after I was in my mid-20s. Did anyone else who was a born-in-JW also miss this stage of personal development or get there very late? I'm guessing the pressure to conform to the religion, the fear or divine mortal retribution, and the threat of public shaming for personal expression is what kept me from developing a true identity until I was old enough to live on my own.

  has anyone else seen the netflix documentary “explained: cults”?

  i thought it was well done.

  i feel like a jw might watch it and feel uncomfortable as the show goes through the definition of cults and then the step by step indoctrination process.

Hard to miss how JWs are very similar to what they would call other Cults.
