one of the few unfounded (i think) accusations that have been thrown at me by certain people is that i have caused 'untold damage' to the silentambs cause.. i don't know quite what this is supposed to mean or what i'm suppoed to have done or whether it is anything more than just 'mud' flung by people who find it easier to criticise rather than actually do anything.. over the last year (is it?
) i've been happy to promote the silentlambs cause and have hosted links to bills site and vidoes / sound files of tv programmes, radio reports, photo's of the march etc... as well as providing a place for people to meet and arrange things.
i hope it has been useful and helpful to at least some people.. if i have inadventantly held things up in some way then i unreservedly and wholeheartedly apologise.. all i can say is, i do my best and may not always get things right.
Of all the responses to this thread, the one that matters the most, Simon, is the one from Silentlambs itself. Let that be your answer.

I am glad that you got to make some connections. Does your sister-in-law have an advocate set up yet? I would strongly suggest her having one. Good for you that you are keeping your head and wits about you. Keep calm.......remember, THINK. THINK clearly and act confidently. There is no room for errors based on emotion know. Your main concern is her safety and yours.

Sometimes it is difficult to make the call to a shelter ourselves when we are the abused, I do think that another important thing to do, Mamashel, is to help this young woman have a plan of escape. Actually this is very important to anyone in any sort of abusive relationships. Have a "plan"....help her figure out where she can go for safety if and when the abuse starts. This of course, if she is returned to the home.

dede......and excellent book that I read, and use as reference at times, is "Captive Hearts Captive Minds" (freedom and recovery from cults and abusive relationships) written by Madeleine Landau Tobias and Janja Lalich. I highly recommend this book.
When I was doing my internship, I was priveledged to go along w/one of the SW who did "exit counseling" for someone leaving a cult. This particular SW use to be a Moonie and I found it extremely interesting what he had to do and how he had to recover leaving. He recommended the book to me.

Before this young girl is returned to her abusive home, she and her family have to go to Family Court. Who exactly is saying that they are thinking of returning her to her home? The school? The Social Worker? It all comes down to the Judge's decision. Do you know the Social Worker assigned to the case? If so (and if not, find out who), make an appointment and go speak with them. Find out when the court date is......Family Court is an open court.....anyone can attend. Ask the Social Worker to make provisions for you to address the Court and speak your concerns.
Another thing you most definately want to do is get a hold of the Guardian et Litem office in your county. Guardien et Litem is a children's advocate program. They work for the best interest of the child. If she doesn't have one (Guardian et Litem) then DEMAND that she does. Talk w/the Guardian. When the court date approaches, the Guardian makes his/her recommendations to the court. Check out this link for Guardian et Litem.......
p.s., I have my Social Work degree and did my intern in the Child Protection Unit in our county. While I think that Valis' motives are sincere, I would have to disagree with his method of action. For anyone on this board to call with second hand knowledge, hear-say, would be ineffective. MAMASHEL is the one that needs to take action, her and her husband. And I would highly recommend NOT going to the media at this point. People need to learn to act and not react......all in due time.

i am sitting here being thankful for my greatest gifts that i have, my two daughters.
today my youngest called and wanted to come by for dinner and wanted to know what we wanted for dinner.
she had an hour and 1/2 off from her work at the doctors office and wanted to visit for a while.
What a nice post! Yes, isn't it great to be loved by family and enjoy each other! You sound like a proud dad and an even prouder grandpa!
