I kind of shrug at this. Christianity and the occult grew up together. It isn't even a matter of wheat and weeds.

The Inherent Founding Paganism of the Jehovah's Witnesses
by Finkelstein inthere is an inherent founding association with paganism through and by the founding leader of the watchtower corporation that has to be realized and accepted as such.
c t russell was once the head editorial writer for the wts.
right up until his death in 1916. russell had associated himself with freemasons for awhile, giving talks at freemason halls and handing out literature he published at the same time.. he made up more or less a commercialized version of the gospel based upon a new era for mankind which he calculated by measuring the dimensions of the great pyramid of giza.

I would like to rant about how I get really upset when I get some weak invitation back to the cult.
by schnell inmy mother wanted me to know that the co gave a talk that kinda-sorta reprimanded an elder in her hall.
he is not the reason i left at all, and this does not address anything to do with me or our family.. my mother-in-law sent me texts which i ignored and now she has sent a picture to my wife on facebook just for me, and it's a prodigal son meme that says, "you see the signs, come back it's not too late".. yeah, it's not too late to accept a global flood in 2370 bce, or that man was created in 4026 bce from a golem spell, or that an us-and-them cult mentality is at all healthy or loving, or that religion is going to be banned by the un, or that i should expect anyone else at the door to accept these stupid ideas in the information age.. what am i supposed to say?
i usually just ignore them, but before i do that, i see that shit and i storm into this weird internalized rage where i start writing a response and deleting it.

While I have no family in the WTBT$, I was recently upped at a park by one zealous lady. I listened to her for a bit then asked bout the Kenite Hypothesis as well as Finklestein's view of the establishment of the nation of Israel. This left her in a quandry, so I elucidated both and asked how long she'd been a JW and she said for almost 15 years ( I, myself, have been out for 20 ). I told her I was disassociated, suggested she study thoroughly using comparative Bibles such as the NRSV and NIV and that she should historically research the date 607 B.C.E.
She took off like a scalded cat and even exited the park ( evil grin )Heh. Unfortunately for them, they do NOT know more about the Bible or Judah and Israel than anyone else on the planet. Yeah, guys, Israel has been studied for over a century, and what we know contradicts the claims of JWism and Bible literalism in general.

@scratchme1010, I agree that it's more about them than me, and they wouldn't want to hear what I could easily say.
@Village Idiot, I don't write much or necessarily anything before I let it go. Especially with texts and social media posts/comments, anything too long will only be taken badly.
@Darkknight757, I wish I had family and friends like that, but every JW in my experience wants to talk JW stuff.
Thanks everybody, I'm grateful for the community here where I can vent about this.

Yeah, it's not too late to accept a global flood in 2370 BCE, or that man was created in 4026 BCE from a golem spell, or that an us-and-them cult mentality is at all healthy or loving, or that religion is going to be banned by the UN, or that I should expect anyone else at the door to accept these stupid ideas in the information age.
What am I supposed to say? I usually just ignore them, but before I do that, I see that shit and I storm into this weird internalized rage where I start writing a response and deleting it. Anything I say is just going to fly over my mother's or MIL's head and then she'll get mad, so why bother?
What also gets me is just how weak it is. This appeal to emotion is little more than, "Come back! .... We need you! .... Come back!" There isn't anything there. There is no substance. It is an attempt at emotional extortion but that is on them. I'm not the one doing that, that's them. Geez.
So eh.
*shrug*
The cult's crazy. Business as usual.

Is God impressed?
by LevelThePlayingField inso a young baptized brother gets to run the microphones.
so he eagerly runs up and down the isle passing the microphone.
he's so happy because "he's being used by jehovah".

Is God more impressed by announced Regular Pioneers than he is by someone who reports as much time without the need for a title?
Indeed, what if they dropped the titles and time reporting? If the GB dropped those things, is it as if Jehovah dropped them? Why?
Is Jehovah more impressed with credulity than critical thinking?

Again a knock at the door!

I saw a conversation on Twitter this morning where people (non-JWs, mind you) were airing their experiences with JWs. One JW told the householder "we're not Creationists, we just believe mankind is 6000 years old". Another browsed through her iPad and asked her householder, "Have you heard of the Book of Genesis?"
Way to go, guys!

Heh. Geez. Well they say now that having the Bible might make people uncomfortable, so let's just have iPads then... *rolls eyes* Yeah, that doesn't get recognized immediately.

Endure or Enjoy??
by stuckinarut2 inhave we ever noticed how witnesses are constantly being told that life is something that needs to be "endured", rather that "enjoyed"?.
life is always so tough, so hard, so difficult in "these last days".
"persecution and trials abound".
-
schnell
Are you accusing witnesses of negative thinking?
As Fisherman alluded, it ties right in with the supposedly finite end times. Keep your eyes on the prize. Endure. If it were accepted that life goes on and there were no future phase of history to look forward to, it'd be less about endurance and more about living life.

Anyway when I was "out in service" while disillusioned, I just gave up and let the lady at the door say whatever she wanted. I just listened. I figured that was far more interesting and effective, whatever the effect might be.
I do not at all value my days as a door-to-door millenarian creationist.
