1975 Made Easy.

as i was one of those people who were around during the build-up to 1975, i thought that some of the newer converts might be interested to see how the society arrived at this date with such confidence.. firstly, we need to see how 1914 figures in this.

we need to appreciate, that although the date 1914 is arrived at retrospectively - that is it was assumed initially to be the date of armageddon, only later was it re-written as the date when satan was thrown out of heaven and jesus ascended to his throne.. the society tied this in with the scripture this generation will by no means pass away until all these things occur, assumed that a generation was the average life-span of 70 years, tacked it onto 1914 to arrive at 1984 but also mentioned that some would live to 80 years owing to special strength, then mentioned that this generation would by no means pass away so that quite a wide time slot was available for armageddon to arrive.

this window of time then provided endless opportunities for jws to be kept in a permanent state of anticipation as various events unfolded.

I was 19 in 1975, I remember it very well, as well as the up-building the WTS did to promote it. There were many that I know sold everything they had to go into the full time service. My mom and dad decided to move "where the need is greater" to help struggling congragations and help start new ones (this was the begining ferver of 1969). It was a very rough time in our family history as where we went had no work that my dad could do, it was just too remote for his trade. I remember eating Pancakes 3 meals a day for a while (it took me years to even look at a other pancake). Eventually in 1973 we were getting so in debt that we had to move where we could have an income so we went to Phoenix.

People there had the same frenzy over the 1975 date, amung them were those that were taking advantage of the short time left........... figuring they would not have to pay for their large purchases that they could not afford. One guy in the summer of 1975 bought a bunch of new appliances for his house, he couldn't afford them at all, he bought themon the type of deal "No payments till January 1976" LMAO........ he told me he did it becasue he knew he would not have to pay a dime for them, becasue the "Great day" would be here by then.

What fools we all were. I can't beleive I hung on to it as long as I did after that date. I agree it really pisses me off at the older
J-duds that will say that it was all a mde up frenzy by some of the out of hand publishers. But I remember the assemblies, the talks the literature, all.... pointing to 1975. If you remember when every one was looking for the declaration of "Peace and Security", then Richard Nixon stated it in a speach on teleivsion about the Vietnam war ending. What a shock!!!!!!!!! Was this the end???!!! The elder that conducted the Book study and my dad were talking about it at the bookstudy right after it happened.

I remember giving a 2nd student talk on the ministery school and based it on when we would announce to the world that our preaching work was ended. Well that never came.

Although I remember justifying what the WTS said about 1975 to some workmates of mine, SHEESH what stupidity.

Created by Aliens?

hehe, i knew that thread topic would get me lots & lots of hits!

ok, here's the situation: my dear friend refuses to be convinced that we were not created by aliens (or some higher form of life, apparently outside the universe) about 8,000 or so years ago.

here are the arguments i have presented to him and what he said.

I kinda understand where this guy is cooming from, evenif it is distorted, there is a following to the beleif that were are products of Aliens.

Now I do not feel we are products of aliens, but there is some evidence that they may have had effects in the past history. one example is the "Gods" and such that every one seems to feel are all powerful. One of the theroies is that they were space creatures, and that they did try to control mankind for a time.

Many cultures have them mentioned in their mythology, even the bibles story of the Nefflim is thought to be a story of what is refered to as the Watchers.

The Chinese have the story of the Yellow Emporer and Lao Tzu.

The Hindu's have many stories about flying craft and sky battles taking place over the heads of those watching on the ground from 4,000 years ago.

The American natives have Pictures on rocks and in caves and temples of strange creatures and craft that is not fully understood, becasue they look too much like modern day UFO's. The Hopi have stories about strange men coming down from the sky to instruct them and teach them farming and such.

I could go on, But I can see where this guy is coming from, I do not beleive it, sounds too far fetched to me. There is a group that is called the "Daughters of Ma" who follow the idea of alien creation and that we are in a learing stage and that one day we will join our place in galactic soceity some time in the future. Their story was an interesting read, but it is off the net now, I really think these people were serious.

But there is no evidence to back up his ideas on alien creation, just as there is no evidence to support Biblical creation. I guess it'slike a JW's or other fanatical religon, they operate on "Faith" and it is almost impossible to support, because it is all in their hearts (so to speak) and does not use logic or reasoning. So when you present them with logic and reasoning, they fall back on the only thing they have and that is faith.

jw views of the events: the society gives the jws the impression that the indictment against rutherford & company was all about the finished mystery book, and the prophetic fulfillment that all-important book played in the death of the two witnesses spoken of in revelation.

Nice stuff Amazing, I really never knew what the exact charges were against the JFR crew, until now. I had a feeling it was treason or something along that line however.

As far as a central doctrine for the Bible Students, you are very correct, they did not have one. During Russels reign over the WTS, the WT was just mearly an aid to help you understand some of the more difficult parts of the bible, it was not as it is today, the single source that a JW can use to understand the bible and the prophecies, Russel has a very strong lean twords independant thinking and the congragations were not "Ran" as one group or organisation. They were each independent to do as they felt was proper. The Watchtower and other publications were mearly guides not doctrine and law as it is today.

i was reading the above or some such title when they quote from a book that their is archaeological evidence of solomon eloquent reign.. what evidence?.

i understand from a tv programme that although israeli archaeologists have excavated throughout the holy land that they can't find direct evidence proof of bibical events.. (they does seem to be evidence of nomads/semi-nomads living in the jericho area),this may be related to joshua.

An interesting on the history of the Hebrews, is that much of their traditions and history is really taken from the early Canaanites,including their God YHWH, the names of some of their patriarchs and early kings.

"In 1964, Dr. Paolo Matthiae, professor of Near East archaeology at the University of Rome began to excavate Tell Mardikh in north-western Syria [forty kilometers south of Aleppo]. It soon became clear that they were excavating the ruins of the ancient city of Ebla. In 1975, as the dig progressed down to Early Bronze Age levels, a remarkable find was made in the form of nearly 20,000 clay tablets which constituted the royal archives of the city. It is however thought that the hebrews were a group of nomads that wandered in the desert area around palestine, and even down into egypt where they met the Hyksos (the Hebrews are thought to be of the same race as the Hyksos) who had entered Egypt from Syria and had taken over the rulership in egypt for a period.

If you look into the stories of the Older Canaanite and Sumerian mythology, you will find a strong parallel to the OT, even the story of the flood, creation, and the patriarchs are there.

And

“about 18,000 [Australians] a year died as a result of complications they developed directly as a result of the medical treatment they received.”

So if we read this the way the WTS wants us to the math would be like this.

1 in 3 die from blood transfusion

and that number is 18,000 a year

So that means that in Australia every year there are about 54,000 blood transfusions every year. Man that's a lot of blood!

LOL, this guy is a crackpot. I was reading some of his other subjects, one is a breif history of the JW's http://www.jehovahinfo.org/history.jw

He states

Although not really a lie it is not the whole truth. In actuality 1914 was to be the end of Armegeddon, as well as the end of the "Gentile times".

The date of the close of that ‘battle’ is definitely marked in Scripture as October, 1914. It is already in progress, its beginning dating from October, 1874.

The last two times the Borg have been at my door, was a saturday morning and I had been out partying on friday night. So needless to say I didn't feel much like conversing with them then. But they have been by three times in total in the last year.

The first time they came by, however (It was like a year ago), They offered me the Awake magazine with the title subject about history. LMAO I loved it (history is a hobby of mine), So the idiot presented it to me saying "Well, I myself really have never had an interest in history, but this article really made me think about it". I then proceded to tell them that history is a hobby of mine and that "if that article pricked his interest in history perhaps he should look into the history that the WTS teaches. They seem to have their own version of when things happened and how they happened, dispite what the historians, Archeoligist, and others have to say." But then I ended it by saying "I have no interest in the distorted version of history, of the JW's." The guy was dumbfounded and just walked away.

I was really hoping he would ask what I meant by that, but I guess he was just too blown away.

One God--Moses 1st?

i've been doing a little research into a pharoah named akhenaten.

been coming up with some variances in dates and would like to know if anyone else has run across this info.. akhenaten (amenhotep iv) reigned 1379-1362 bc.

according to 'the bible timeline' moses was born in 1355 bc, right after akhenaten.

As far as Abraham and the others being monotheists there is a section in Gen where Abraham makes a servent swear an oath if you read it carefully you will notice that it says "swear an oath to the God of heavens and the God of Earth" although not resounding evidence to being multitheistic, it is strange he would not have written it or said it in this way "swear an oath to the God of heavens and earth". It is really not very clear if Abraham was even a real person he may have been, but there is little true evidence to show it.

The first 5 books of the bible seems to have 2 major writers and 2 lesser. The two major writers Were the Yahwest and the Elohist. Much of the differences can be seen in the writings. Take a look at the first 2 chapters of Genisis. They deal with creation, but they are not quite the same even in the order of creation. Many apoligiests have used various explantions for this, but the most common is that they were written by multple people and assembled later in years.

There is a websight that digs into this subject, but unfortunatly I have it bookmarked at work not here at home, I will post it on monday when I go back to work for anyone to read.

Another old religion that is also monotheistic, and you may not beleive it is Hindu. Although they have many many gods theyreally only have one god. That is Brahman "all is Brahman, Brahman is all things. Also Hinduisem is older then the Hebrew religon, the roots of Hindu are possibly as old as 4000bc, but possibly a later date of 2200bc is proposed. That would make Hindu the first monotheistic beleif. The story of Job is considered to be a Hindu story in it origan, and was adopted into the OT after the contacts with the Persians in the 6th centary BC.

I cooked rice today!!!

after five years of failed attempts, i finally cooked rice today!!

it isn't soggy, it isn't crunchy, it's just right!

Hey Elsewhere,
A couple of tricks to making a moist and juicy roast, everytime is
1: in a pan on the top of the stove brown the roast on all sides prior to putting it in for its final cooking stage.

2: Buy a meat thermometer and cook the roast no more then medium on the meat themometer. Take it off or out fo the heat and let it rest for about 10 minites, before cutting it.

When you take it out at medium on the scale it will continue to cook for the 10 minites that it rests. If you want medium rare take it out when it hits the rare temp level.

No on rice, I use only long grain or jasmine rice. The locals here in Guam use short grain rice (Calrose) they are cooked very differently. The long grain is usually very fluffy when you use this method (short grain rice is always sticky it has a lot of starch),

measure your, long grain or jasmine, rice out with a measuring cup The package says use a 1C of rice to 2C of water, that is not a good way to do it. cut your water down to 1C rice to 1 3/4C of water.

Put all in a sauce pan cold add a pinch of salt if you like. Without a lid bring to a boil on a medium high-high heat (keep an eye on at this stage as it can burn and boil over. As soon as it staarts to boil turn the heat down to low (no more then 2 each stove is different) cover the pan and wait for about 10-15 miniites. test the rice for texturs and water content if it is tender take the rice off the heat and let stand with the lid off for about 5 minites. Results Fluffy tender rice everytime. Otherwise buy a rice cooker, LOL, it does it all for you.
