Was a spur of the moment decision when I made my first post on H2O. I went to post my message and saw this text box staring me in the face asking for my handle. I had no idea, so I went with the first thing that came to my head, that I was seeking knowledge and truth.

what happened with the 6000 years?.
jehovah's witnesses are generally very ignorant about the watchtower society history.
most of them would benefit greatly from reading older issues of the watchtower and other literature published by the society in earlier years.
In many ways, the late 60s and early 70s were the best times the WTS has ever seen (and may ever see). Not only did they have a perfect whip/carrot in the 1975 speculations, but conditions in the world were tailor-made for them: the mass protests and riots of 1968, the buildup of the Vietnam war, the situation in the Middle East, the destruction of the environment, the rising crime rate, the energy crisis, rising inflation -- it was the perfect conditions for JWs to believe the end was here.
Look at it today: 1975 is a big stain on their record, war is but a memory for most people, the Middle East is still bad but that is always the case, the environment is in better shape, crime is down, inflation is down, and of course the Net is exposing the WTS as charlatans. No wonder things aren't going well for the Witnesses.
No doubt some older ones among them look back wistfully at those black-and-white days of the early 70s when everything seemed crystyal clear to them.

Who has actually read and understands the treaty and it's true impact, not just the spin that you watch on the evening news?
I'm an American citizen who is proud of his country and appreciates my freedoms. One of my freedoms is freedom of speech, and I use it. Sometimes I use it to praise America, and sometimes I use it to bash America. When it deserves it, I bash America. I have the freedom to do it, I have the right to do it, and I have the obligation to do it as a citizen. Or should I just sit back and let this country go to hell?
As for the Kyoto treaty, of course I have studied it and I know that it is more complex an issue than you hear on the mainstream news. Give me more credit than that. What you don't know is where I stand on the treaty, or global warming, or any of these issues. It isn't what you'd guess. I only jumped in when I saw someone make a statement that was totally irrelevant and stupid to make in this discussion.

There is nothing to argue, that statement is totally irrelevant to today. 50 years ago, the world should have been grateful to the U.S. for their help (and grateful to England, and grateful to other Allied nations).
That does not mean America can sit back and do whatever the hell it wants now while relying on the tired, "Oh we saved your ass, so shut up" attitude. The past does not excuse the present.
As great as America is, its citizens are letting it go to hell and the yahoos are still running around saying, "World War II! World War II!" No wonder they don't see the problems that are happening right under their noses. The rest of the world sure sees what's happening. The Land of the Free is rapidly becoming anything but.
But hey, let's just trade tired platitudes and everything will be fine in the future. Have another Big Mac...

Why does this idiotic statement get dragged out every time some American doesn't know how to argue a point? Guess what? Germany was the "bad guy" in both world wars, so I guess we'd better hate them to this day.
It was half-a-century ago! Let it rest and live in the real world today and actually think about issues instead of comparing dick sizes.

those of us who used to be jws, i have a question for you: why would any of us think revelation has anything to say about the 21st century, or that we are in the last days period?.
when we left the jws, we did so because of their false teachings.
we saw through their faulty reasoning about why we are in the last days.
Of course I answered your points, WW. I just answered them with indirection. You indirectly answered your own point too by suggesting their "may" be a million Christians in those non-Christian lands. Exactly! Out of more than 3 billion non-Christians in those lands, there may be 1/3 of 1% Christians. Most of the world has little or no contact with Christianity, as we have both now confirmed.

That's the point I keep trying to make: America is not what it used to be, and most sheep haven't even noticed because they are too busy staring slack-jawed at the "news" and "reality" programs.

The most detailed explanation of the Mexico double-standard is in the book Crises of Conscience, by Ray Franz. He includes photocopies of the correspondence between Brooklyn and the Mexican branch, with the Mexican brothers basically saying, "Um, are you suuure we should be doing this?" and when they get the response to go ahead, they write again saying, "Um, OK, but are you really sure?"
It would be funny if it weren't so sad for what the brothers and sisters in Malawi were going through at that very moment.
