Gilead meal? Is that all it was? All this fuss for nothing. Well, not for nothing. I used to love Gilead lunch! People had some wine and headed down for the best meal of the year. Extra long, and extra good.

why do jws fear getting 'priveleges' revoked?
by Bgurltryal infrom what i understand these privilages aren't much of a privilage!.

When you are in a closed society, anything that elevates your status looms large in the imagination. Furthermore, when you are told that getting these privileges are a sign of God's blessing, they could ask you to take out the trash and you will be grateful.
Very simple psychology.

Bethel rules... fables or truth...
by MrMoe incan you all enlighten me, i have heard certain "bethel rules" and wanted to find out if they are fact or fiction.
1. only one item on any surface at any time (a phone or lamp etc.. as long as it is just 1 item.).
2. allowance of $80 a month for toiletries etc... (has that allowance gone up).

It is like a college dorm in many ways -- after all, you have a lot of people there who are college age. If they went to college, they would be doing the college thing. Instead they went to Bethel and they do the college thing there are Bethel. I keep stressing that we are talking about a bunch of people who are 19 or early 20s, so they act like people that age.
As for hiding the drinking, I'll never know where the idea came from that Bethelites don't drink. They all drink, openly, all the time. It's no big deal.

I'll confirm what Joel said, and expand a bit:
1. Only one item on any surface at any time (a phone or lamp etc.. as long as it is just 1 item.)
The actual rule is 2 or 3 items, in general. Basically, they don't want a messy surface, so they came up with that rule. I've known Bethelites who were called out of work to go back to their rooms to clear up too many items that were left on a desk. In one case, the 'items' were bound volumes, ironically enough.
2. Allowance of $80 a month for toiletries etc... (has that allowance gone up)
It has gone up, but not by that much.
3. No T.V. or radio or only approved programs/stations?
Competely false. Bethelites watch TV all the time, go to lots of movies (even "R" movies), groove to the radio just like everyone else. Hey, they're mostly 19- and 20-year olds -- what else do you think they will be doing?
4. Curfew (if so what time is the curfew?)
No curfew. Remember, they're mostly 19- and 20-year olds. They stay up laaaaate.
5. No drinking inside or outside and if so it is limited.
ROFL! Bethelites are the biggest drinkers of all. Now that the New York State drinking age was raised to 21, they very youngest Bethelites aren't supposed to drink until they are 21. But drinking is a big part of the Bethel culture.
6. All belongings upon arrival are inspected (music etc...) and if not approved of they are thrown away.
False. Of course, if you lace your room with questionable books or CDs, you may get spoken to. But if you smuggle porn into Bethel, no one will be the wiser (I knew a Bethelite who did just that).
7. 30 minute meals.
20, actually, though if you wish to stay longer and keep eating you certainly can. But you have to be back to work soon, and you may have to change clothes (depending on your assignment), so you'd better not take too long. Bethelites learn to be fast eaters. But hey, they are mostly 19- and 20-year olds, so wolfing down their food fits their style.
8. Assigned job and no you cannot transfer.
True, you are assigned your jobs, but you certainly can transfer. You can ask, or they may ask you to transfer, and they might say no, but people change jobs all the time as the needs of Bethel call for it. However, some people do get stuck at hated jobs for long periods of time, and they do sometimes assign junk jobs to people to see if they have a good attitude about it.

Goodbye, and Thanks For All the Fish......
by Prisca indear all,.
it is with much regret that i have decided to leave jw.com.
it is not a decision i have made lightly, in fact i had been thinking about it for many weeks now.. i am leaving because i cannot be a part of a forum that condones abuse and deliberate offensiveness towards other posters.

Prisca,
You and I have always gotten along just fine. I'm not aware of any occasion when we have argued. In chat, we have even defended each other. Therefore, I hope you will take what I say in the spirit it is intended:
I have lived with abuse in my past, and one thing I have learnt is that you do not have to put yourself in situations where you will be abused.
Correct. Yet I have noticed many occasions when you have jumped into a thread to chide a poster. No doubt there is a past history with him or her that I'm not aware of, but the point is that you have, at times, 'volunteered' for situations that are ripe for arguments. Now, I recognize this, for I do it too. At times it gets wearying to me, and I need to take a break.
May I suggest that you do the same, and then come back? And if the arguments are wearying to you, try to do what I often fail to do: avoid tricky situations entirely. Don't jump into arguments. Don't chide people you have had a history with. Let it go. It helps.

We Need God's Word!
by comment in1. a well-known american president who emancipated the slaves and made a famous speech at gettysburg once said something nice about the bible.
what a fine attitude!
today, millions find true peace of mind and spiritual happiness in the pages of that historical, holy book.

1. A well-known American president
And therefore someone who is no expert on religion, and thus whose opinion of the Bible is valueless.
God's Word clearly states that it is God's Word.
Hard to argue with that!

Double Standards - Where is the line drawn?
by msil ini was happy when the yadrif was given the boot - we never needed the spread of hatred and name calling.
it seemed as though everyone felt the same way.. i find it hypocritical that as long as you are "influential in the xjw community" or if you run a big anti-jw website you can call anyone names and you can post any obscene drivel as long as it is a song which you dedicate other posters.. i find it ironic that a "well-respected" poster (and i could give a damn what his past actions or brave deeds are, or what fancy essays he wrote) would call me a biggot in chat for asking simple questions but then he would defend the stuff kent wrote in reference to aguest.
i don't give a damn if it was written by frank zappa or some other crack-smokin' loser - the fact that they are song lyrics is irrelevant.

May I offer a suggestion? Apparently Kent has said some things recently that has caused msil, Prisca and others some offense. I say 'apparently' because I haven't read anything by Kent recently. See, isn't that simple? I haven't read Kent's words, and so I haven't been offended.
Try it.

Guilty as Charged... I confess....
by AGuest into the "inquisition" of these days... that is on jw.com... may you have peace.. because there seems to be a 'movement' to 'expose' me as false, and judge and condemn me as a 'jezebel' and more... i would hereby like to confess my 'sins' and 'errors'... and repent my actions/inactions... before you... and all onlookers... if you will permit me.
thank you.. i confess... that i am a servant to the household of god, israel, and a slave of christ, by means of an anointing with holy spirit, which i received directly from the person of my lord, the son of god, jaheshua mischajah.. i confess... that i have been given the 'free gift' of holy spirit, in the form of hearing spirits, discerning inspired utterances, so that i hear not only the voice of my lord, the but voices of various spirits, so i am able to relate to others that hear, as well as those that do not hear... what the spirit says to the congregation.. i confess... that i have been freely given other 'gifts' of that same spirit, which gifts manifest themselves in me in various ways and which gifts i have not attempted to hide from anyone... man... or god.. i confess... that i have a love for my father and my lord to such an extent that i would subject myself to public humiliation, before all men, bear reproach now... and endure a 'torture stake' for the glory that awaits me, which glory i have nought but faith in, because i have heard of its certainty... and received my 'sealing'... directly from the one the promised such glory, my lord, the son of god, jaheshua mishajah.. i confess... that i have agreed to 'repay' my lord for his love and kindness... the undeserved kindness granted me... in the only way that i can... by obeying his voice and going to the household of god, those that go with them, and any others who are 'thirsting' and 'wishing'... and telling them that the same gifts and glories undeservedly afforded me... can be granted to them as well.. i confess... that as a true servant to the household of god, by means of undeserved kindness, i have been granted to know the fruit of my father's spirit that is love... for all of mankind... including my enemies.
a love such it compels me to tell what i hear to those who wish to hear of it, even at risk to my own spirit... whether they hear... or they refrain.. i confess... that contrary to what is 'usual' among so-called professed 'christians' and 'anointed', i have not sought to compel people to follow me, or to join any church, religion or other institution of 'theology', and will not, but instead, have asked and spoken only that any who 'hear'... and any who wish to hear... hear... and follow the voice of the fine shepherd, my lord, the son of god, jaheshua mischajah.... i repent... that i am but mere flesh and blood, a woman, a 'foolish thing' and 'weaker vessel', so that i do not always have the strength to stand against the opposition facing me, although i have wished no harm, no evil, no malice toward any.. i repent... that at times my forehead is not as hard as flint, and my heart is not so protected so as not to feel fright when facing off with my adversary and his agents.. i repent... that i do not possess in me the gifts of the spirit that grant miracles, such that those who do not believe can have the 'scales' removed from their eyes so as to see the things 'unseen', things almost too glorious for me to utter... with their own eyes... rather than simply ask for and be granted the 'free gift' of holy spirit and see for themselves.... i repent... that i do not possess in me the 'perfect' love that would move me to not feel hurt and pain when derided and ridiculed, but be able to say to my father, as did my lord, "forgive them father, for they do not know what they do.

Sorry, that movie analogy is as wrong as a WTS quote. I've seen the movie, and the heroine was guilty of nothing more than violating the hypocrisy of the times. In this case, it's different. Shelby was caught in a deception, it was pointed out, period.
Defend your friend all you want, but you can't defend her behavior. It was wrong.

LET'S MAKE A LITTLE WAGER
by You Know inperhaps you recall the instance in the bible where samson made a wager with the philistines that they couldnt guess his riddle.
as it turned out they wheedled the answer out of him by his fiancee, but the point is that they had a wager.
since the underlying assumption of the apostasy is that we are not living in the last days of this system of things, and that this world is not facing anything remotely like the biblical apocalypse, at least not any time soon, in the spirit of such antagonism, i would like to propose a similar wager.

borgfree,
That was the wager You Know made the last time. He said he would leave JWs by no later than 2001 if the end hadn't come. When the deadline arrived, he backed out, claiming he was only kidding. I suspect he will find a way to wriggle out of this wager when November 1st arrives and he is proven wrong for the 5th October in a row.
