I remember that article and read it at the time. I don't have any sources to offer you, but I can tell you what really happened back then:
POP superstar Michael Jackson has been pronounced the Archangel Michael by adoring young members of his religious sect, the Jehovah Witnesses.
I laughed at this charge back then, but now, who knows? Stupid rumors fly around JWs all the time. However, I still doubt there was much to this because even young Witnesses know the WTS teaching about Michael the archangel, and would have a hard time convincing too many of their friends that the WTS was wrong without being accused of apostasy. My guess is that the author interviewed some young Witnesses, made the suggestion that perhaps Jackson was the archangel, and the Witness responded, 'Yeah, wouldn't that be cool!' in a semi-joking way. As someone who has been quoted in publications on numerous occasions, I have been chagrined at how often my words were mixed around to give a wrong impression. I'll bet something similar happened here.
But it has bitterly divided the two and a half million Witnesses world-wide and upset the clean-living singer.
Oh, there was a bit of an uproar over Jackson at that time, but it hardly "bitterly divided" JWs. Basically, a lot of Witnesses thought Jackson wasn't setting a good example as a JW, and contacted Bethel about him. Bethel got sick and tired of having to answer these questions about Jackson, but that was the extent of the 'uproar.'
Older Church members far from putting Jackson on a pedestal, cannot forgive him for appearing as a devilish werewolf in his smash-hit video, Thriller.
Correct. See below.
Young Witnesses, hooked on the Prince of Pop's music, his dress and his shadow dancing have formed the MJ Cult. They believe the 26-year old multi-millionaire is the Archangel Michael as described in the Book of Daniel, Chapter 12. Verse 1, and "will deliver his people" Part of the passage reads: "And at that time, shall Michael stand up, the Great Prince which standeth for the Children of God."
As I said, I think this is laughable and untrue. They probably loved his music, but a cult?? Somebody misunderstood something.
But more fundamental witnesses feel Jackson represents an unhealthy and decadent faction which is damaging the Church's image. James Penton, a professor of religious studies in Alberta, Canada, said yesterday that Jackson had even been threatened with disfellowship excommunication from the Church because of his "worldly activities." Professor Penton who says he was himself excommunicated in 1981 that Jackson subsequently renounced the Thriller video in an issue of Awake, a sect publication which has a circulation of nine million. In the article, Jackson says: "I realise now it was not a good idea…I'll never do a video like that again."
All true. Bethel got so sick of this issue they had Jackson spoken to about his activities. Jackson then renounced the Thriller video, and it was quoted in Awake! Not long after this, Jackson walked away from the JWs.
The row is expected to explode next month with a week-long series of protests by young dissidents outside the Witnesses' headquarters in Brooklyn, New York.
ROFL! Of course not! Yes, there was a protest outside Bethel in the first week of October, 1984, but it had nothing to do with Jackson. Nor was it by "young" dissidents, but opposers in general, protesting the usual stuff. Nor did it "explode," for it was just a handful of opposers.
One of the protest Organisers. Mr David Riccobini, of Connecticut, said "It is the first time Witness kids have had someone to look up to. Otherwise they lead a very drab life."
See how the media gets things wrong? The reporter interviewed someone who was planning to be part of the general protest, probably said, 'What about this Michael Jackson thing?', and the response was above. This gets twisted into a story about how young JWs are going to protest in front of Bethel about Michael Jackson!
Jackson, who often disguises himself to do missionary work for the Church, was touring last night and unavailable But friends say he is "deeply troubled" by the row.
He was troubled, and later left.
