Thanks to all - and A@G for the initial question.
Lori and I are working on a non-fiction book and book proposal (not about JWs) right now, and this info has been very encouraging and helpful. I'm a professional newspaper and magazine writer and editor, but getting a book published is a whole new field for me.
I think the area we're writing about (exceptional health and fitness for people over 50 - more for the 'let's get ripped and go rock climbing and mountain biking' crowd as opposed to the 'let's put on our pink sweat suits and power stroll the mall' types!) would have a much broader market potential than a book about JWs, especially with the baby boomers now just exploding the over 50 population.
So, wish us luck, and thanks for any help and suggestions you might give. And we wish the best for any others who proceed with their projects.

How do you get a book published?
by Awakened at Gilead insince leaving jws i have read as many books as i have found written by exjws... i have noticed that some on this board have projects and books that they are working on.... i have an idea for a book that seems to fill a niche in the exjw market... i won't say what it is yet, since i don't want anyone stealing my idea, since it is just hatching... but suffice it to say that i see a need for this book that i would like to write... and i think i could do it... .
i am going to start writing soon, as i have all tehse ideas swimming around in my head... i need to get them onscreen in my computer...any ideas on how to start to get something published?

Lawyers at Bethel
by nbernat ini heard that bethel pays for brothers' undergrad and law school expenses if they serve as lawyers, is that true?
also, just to see the hypocrisy, would they accept someone who went to harvard law even if they weren't a regular pioneer?

Judah Ben Schroeder is not going to college on Bethel's dime. He and his wife - well into their 40s now, I think, - are going to college evidently on her father's dime. He's a wealthy mid-west auto dealer. Judah, at least, has his four year degree and is in law school. I'm not sure where his wife's progress is at the moment.
I don't know if there is any expectation that he will use that degree in anyway for Bethel service.
This has come up before, and I've got the above info from pretty reliable sources. Again, there are a lot of ex-JW urban myths around this subject.
In regard to choosing GB family members for college, well, nearly all of them are childless. And as I mentioned, Judah Ben was well into middle age when he went to college. Your scenario about Bethel "secretly" paying for college for well-connected JWs is simply unrealistic. A totally unfounded conspiracy theory.
Yes, if you have a degree for a profession that the Bethels worldwide have a real need for, law, medicine and engineering especially, you are likely to get accepted at Bethel and appointed to use that skill quite handily. I know of two families, the Dixons and the Howards, who were accepted at Bethel with their kids because they were MDs. And NO, they didn't spend a minute working in the laundry or something similar in order to "prove" their worth and humility.

And Bethelites get to go to Harvard Law School for free???!!! Yeah. If you can prove that, I'll get reinstated and apply to Bethel! Christ, Harvard isn't even in the same state as Bethel!
Me thinks there are some serious ex-jdub urban myths, about as believeable as the JW ones!

I seriously, seriously doubt that Bethel will pay for six or more years of college for some Bethelite to get a law degree or engineering degree or medical degree.
They might help someone finish off a degree who has experience and education in that field and they need that kind of expertise. In fact, I know that has been done.
But's it's not like they grab some newbie Bethelite and say, "Hey Bro, would you like us to pay for your college and your degrees?"
Get real.

Does anyone else, in the midst of these really angry ex-JW comments and the responses, find it sort of hilarious that our main advertiser on this thread is the International Muslim Marriage Site?
God, I'm sick of constantly angry people. Yeah, the world is a rough and tumble place. That's the given. That's where we all start. Some of us get really fucked over on top of that, and some worse than others. I decided a long time ago I wasn't gonna let that write the story of my life.
I decided I WAS gonna write as much of that story as I could. I decided I was gonna laugh and smile and not be pissed off as much as I possibly could. Right now in my life, I'm about one fucking flat tire away from losing my home and more.
But I still laugh everytime I see that Muslim ad. I will only let my circumstances fuck me over so far.
Thanks Tom and wschroeder and Randy. Great thread

Me too, James!
I know Dave's story. The whole story is linked here often, and is a great one. Interesting how his visit to Bethel was such an influence on his leaving the Witnesses. Sort of like AwakenedatGilead finding that Gilead is what proved to him that the Witnesses didn't have the truth.

skally, I won't patronize you.
I'll just tell you how I feel, like you just did.
Humor can often be a 1000 times MORE effective than hatred and anger in destroying that which needs to be destroyed. Showing how foolish something is can be devastating. There's a reason that The Emperor's New Clothes is an ancient fable. There is a great truth to it.
And I'll also say that Snowbird comparing the posters on here to racists and misogynists is way out of line.
You two should probably have followed your first instincts and not read the thread, considering how it seemed to hit such an angry, raw nerve. I'm not sure what's going on here, but a bunch of old friends sharing stories from their lives is not exactly a racist, woman hating plot.

What's Your Favorite Alcohol To Drink?
by minimus ini used to drink captain morgan and diet coke but i've switched to jack and diet.. i like a flavored vodka martini as well as lite beer.. .
-
Seeker4
The drink I have most frequently is vodka and diet ginger ale on the rocks, maybe with a squeeze of lemon or lime.
The drinks I like the best are a good microbrew, red wine or a Bushmills on the rocks.
Lori makes a mean dirty vodka martini, with three small onions on a toothpick, but two of them will just knock me on my ass.

I have a question for the elders/ex-elders
by asilentone inwhat would the elders do if they learned about a brother that went to the business expo at the local church?

Personally, absolutely nothing. Maybe I'd have gone with him if he'd asked me.
